Review: Dutch dance behemoth Armada Music might be best known for trance and hard dance, but for the last five years their Subjekt offshoot has delivered some killer house music - material that frequently gets played in some of the biggest of big rooms over in Ibiza. Review: Big room house specialists Toolroom have been responsible for countless White Isle anthems over the years, something that makes their annual Toolroom Ibiza compilations a must-check for those seeking future floor-fillers. Their latest edition is something of a beast, featuring no less than 50 full-length, unmixed tracks and a couple of themed, non-stop DJ mixes (one gathers the set's deep, funky and electro house cuts, the other the tech-house tracks). Naturally there are far too many highlights to list here, but our current favourites includeMason Maynard's subtly DJ Mujava-inspired 'Light My Fire', the piano-powered rush of GotSome and Georgia Meek's 'Dead End', the twisted tech-house weight of Iglesias and Classmatic's 'Freak', and the warped, mind-mangling late-night shuffle of De La Swing and Rendher's 'Voodoo Step'.

Review: This EP is the first of two electro-themed releases due before the end of 2021 on Club Designs, and it's an impressive collection. From the speak-and-spell vocals on Sometimes Never's "Back on my BS" and Sharkki's "Style Factory" to the low-slung groove and acid buzz of Ludwig Lurch's "Unity", fans of old school electro will find much to love here. However, the compilation has some more esoteric moments, most notably on the reflective synths of Garneau & Ghostwhip's "Weirdos R Us". In the main though, this is a good time electro funk collection, as popping "Best Boy" by Darius The Barbarian & Cherriep so brilliantly illustrates.

Review: Sankeys resident Darius Syrossian was chatting with London tech house legend Bushwacka at the beginning of lockdown about starting a collaboration. When the latter checked out what Syrossian had been releasing on Moxy, there was a feeling that it would indeed work and could be the first of many. With that in mind Crosstown Rebels presents "Return To Jericho", a deep and evocative joint featuring hypnotic polyrhythms and a dubby atmosphere that makes for perfect mood music. This is followed by the more minimal and moodier groove of "Akkabi Blue" that's just perfect for going deeper into the afterhours.

Review: Phil Weeks' long-running French house/deep house label Robsoul Recordings round up the best of their 2020 output in one high-VFM package. As per Robsoul's MO generally, you won't find a lot in the way of navel-gazing introspection or pointless, self-indulgent experimentalism here - Robsoul have always specialised in dropping beats to move your feets and this year's crop doesn't disappoint! The wonky, jazzy garage of The Mekanism's 'Signs', the raw jack of Joss Moog's 'So Good So Fresh', Demuir's strutty hip-houser 'Nice And Dutty' and Jade Cox's looping, west coast-ish 'Realise' are just some of the highlights of a fine collection.

Review: Pumping out the bangers like Corona ain't no thing, Darius Syrossian returns to Hot Creations after making his debut back in 2018 with the Moxy EP. The lead track, defined by its crunchy warehouse boom and stuttering 909 percussion, sees a subtle bassline hold down a major groove while various vocal snippets and narratives of bravado fill in the gaps. "Boujee B" on the flip opts for an instrumental, tribal and tech house alternative, full of heavy offbeat percussion, keys, progressions and pumping club vibes.

Review: Chameleon-like producer Yotam Avni has seen his music over the years make it to a host of peak time labels like Stroboscopic Artefacts, Hotflush Recordings, Ovum and Innervisions. But never an album! Cologne institution Kompakt welcomed the Israeli artist into its fold with a single on the Kompakt sub-label Extra this year - following previous 'Speichers' from Robag Wruhme and Marc Romboy - with Kompakt's main imprint proudly presenting the Israeli artist's debut album, Was Here. Inspired to join the dots between jazz, Detroit techno and classical, find deep, watery and reflective numbers in "9th May", to bassline vocal tracks in "Just Another Day" (featuring DoP), and Riechian-piano influences in others like "Nature Of Dreams". Review: It could be argued that Phil Weeks' "Live At Palladium" track was a little overlooked when it was first released back in 214. Weeks certainly thinks so as he's decided to reissue it with a pair of tasty new remixes. The EP opens with a fresh "2020 Remaster" of the track, which successfully polishes up the languid, hypnotic, groovy and emotion-rich, Marvin Gaye-sampling original mix. Junior Sanchez takes a widly different approach, delivering a sweaty and forthright "French Touch" style remix full of early Cassius style synth loops, bustling beats and chopped-up samples. Arguably even better is Darius Syrossian's re-rub, which re-frames "Live At Palladium" as a loopy chunk of deep tech-funk heaviness for peak-time dancefloors.
