Defected Presents House Masters - Todd Terry
Various / Todd Terry
The Todd Terry Project - "Bango" (To The Batmobile/Club Bang) - (5:26) 82 BPM
Hardhouse - "Check This Out" (Club version) - (5:15) 80 BPM
Review: Defected's ongoing House Masters series should be essential listening for anyone keen to discover more about the recording careers of some of the scene's most iconic producers. Certainly, this latest installment, chronicling NYC legend Todd Terry's finest moments, contains far more hits than misses. At 35 tracks deep, it's a bit of a beast, but features not only all of his best-known productions ("Weekend", "Can You Party", "I'll House You", "Bango (To The Batmobile)", his remix of Everything But The Girl's "Missing"), but also a swathe of lesser-known remixes (A slammin' version of Bizarre Inc's "I'm Gonna Get You"), Dubs (a brilliantly stripped-back version of Hardrive's "Voices Inside My House") and original productions (the hip-house era madness of Black Riot's "Warlock").

DJ-Kicks (unmixed Tracks)
Mr Scruff / Various
Seiji Feat. Lyric L - "Loose Lips" - (4:46) 82 BPM
Review: 2020 marks the 25th year of !K7's acclaimed DJ-Kicks series with Mr Scruff following contributions of late from Leon Vynehall, Laurel Halo, Peggy Gou and Kamaal Williams! Mr Scruff's adventures in sound brings to DJ-Kicks more than 30 tracks of wildly varying styles featuring highlighted music from Equiknoxx, Tiger, Errorsmith, Max Graef and Zongamin. Scruff brings to his edition an exclusive collaboration with CyberPunkJazz ("3001: A Space Disco Remix") and an unreleased track from Andy Ash to boot. Alexander Robotnik makes in there with the wild New York post-funk of "Love Supreme" alongside a heavy Tony Allen percussion session in "Gbedu B". DJ Nervoso for the win too!

DJ-Kicks (unmixed Tracks)
Deetron / Various
Carl Craig - "Goodbye World" - (3:32) 83 BPM
Review: This an altogether epic offering from Deetron; a vast collection of un-mixed tracks from his brilliant DJ Kicks mix (naturally included as a bonus cut) that is little less than a lesson in the evolution of techno over the last three decades. Amongst the 38 tracks you'll find fine representatives of a myriad of sub-genres (intelligent techno, dub techno, IDM, ambient techno, gospel techno, and so on), as well as past, present and future classics (Damier and Trent's "Morning Factory", Spacetime Continuum's "Swing Factory", Mark Ernestus's recent Equinoxx remix, the Motor City bliss of Rhythim is Rhythim AKA Derrick May's "Ka-o-tic Harmony", a brilliant old Black Dog Productions workout). In other words, it's a breathlessly brilliant collection of both well-known and obscure gems. It comes heartily recommended.

Back To Mine: Tycho (unmixed Tracks)
Various
Casino Versus Japan - "It's Very Sunny" - (4:45) 86 BPM
Craft Spells - "Our Park By Night" - (4:19) 87 BPM
Review: Given that his trademark brand of electronic music is rooted heavily in ambient, IDM and downtempo music, you'd expect that Scott Hansen AKA Tycho's contribution to the Back To Mine series would be full of heady, horizontal and pleasingly immersive musical treats. It is, of course, with a clutch of exclusive tracks and mixes of his own - see the breakbeat-driven IDM gorgeousness of 'PBS (live edit)' and a fresh, chunky, dub-fuelled dancefloor rework of Little Dragon's 'Little Man' - being joined by a wealth of highlights including the ultra-laidback lo-fi dream-pop of Craft Spells, the immersive bliss of Luis Lancaster, the skewed and wonky electronica of Schneider TM, the outsider house charm of Weval and the hallucinatory, sunrise-friendly breaks of Octa Octa.
