Review: A new mix from perennial party faves Soul Clap is always a cause for celebration, but there's something extra-special about this particular exercise in dancefloor nostalgia. Nice 'N' Ripe Allstars sees them revisit the bulging back catalogue of Grant Nelson's Nice 'N' Ripe label, an imprint that has tracked the rise, fall and subsequent rebirth of UK garage since its' birth in 1993. Soul Clap's mix - an action-packed 30-track affair featuring some of their own edits and remixes of classic cuts - does a great job in showcasing the best the label has to offer, flitting between early US garage style jams, loose soulful house, sturdy two-step, bass-heavy speed garage and the kind of long-lost jams which should be bitten by today's retro-minded house producers. Review: The second instalment of Licked Out Funk on Funk Fusion is rip-roaring to say the least, as all 28 tracks were brought into this world with the sole purpose of getting you moving, something accomplished through big drum hits and recognisable samples. Almost every track on this compilation has a sample you'll recognise; 'Come To Skanker' is a distortion of Beatles classic 'Come Together', 'Ain't No Funkin' does a good job flipping Chaka Khan's original 'Ain't Nobody' and 'Trippin Biggie' gives the funk treatment to The Notorious BIG. This is a feel-good album of still quality tracks and you'll have a hard time not moving to the procession of boom-bap drums, big synth lines and sense of retro nostalgia.

Review: If your record bag/CD wallet/hard drive (delete as appropriate) is flagging under the weight of soul-sapping breakbeat bootlegs and ill-advised ghetto funk remixes, help is at hand. This compilation from Actual Sounds does contain plenty of sneaky bootlegs and ghetto funk style reworks (including one that bites "Sweet Home Alabama"), but they're all of a much higher quality than we've come to expect of late. There are snappy trips into boogie breaks territory (Big Bang Breaks' "French Funk"), wobble-funk (a thunderous version of the Jacksons' "Rockin' Robin") and Madchester revivalism ("Free Soup"), not to mention a string of booty-licious ghetto funk stompers. If this doesn't wake you up, nothing will.

Review: Some years back, Laurent Garnier's F Communications label released a series of compilations under the title "Megasoft Office". These gathered together deep, groovy and downtempo cuts that made an excellent musical accompaniment to your working day. Irma's latest collection, "Work With Balearic Music", takes a similar approach. Wisely, the storied label group has dipped into their archive of original Balearic-era Italian productions, offering up dream house classics and rarities from the likes of Keys & Tronics Ensemble, Montego Bay, Belladonna, Don Carlos, Notenshun and Soft House Company. Throw in some jazzy downtempo grooves and a handful of recent productions and you have an expansive, on-point set rich in classic cuts.
