Fingers - (1:47) 72 BPM
Review: Brazilian duo My Girlfriend - AKA veteran multi-instrumentalist Zopelar and 18-year-old wunderkind Benjamin Sallum - come with six pleasingly varied cuts here that will suit the dancers as well as the chin-strokers and headnodders. 'Piercing', a two-minute beats-free intro piece that's reminiscent of early System 7, opens proceedings, followed by 'Gidi', which marries ker-razy jazz beats to a west coast funk b-line and suspiciously 'Baby Love'-like female "ooh-ooh-ooooh-oohs". Things take an 80s electro turn on 'Modal', 'Believe In Something' has a blissed-out, Sunday AM feel, 'Corner Club' is a fiery lil' shuffler and finally 'Fingers' pushes further into looping, experimental territory.

Review: Miami man His Dirty Secrets made his debut in early 2016, serving up a sextet of steamy disco rubs on Midnight Riot. On this follow-up for Masterworks Music he's reined himself in a little, though the four tracks on offer are amongst his strongest reworks to date. There's a breezy dreaminess about the killer combination of undulating boogie gass, jazzy guitar riffs, warm chords and drifting vocal snippets at the heart of deep disco opener "Floatin", while "Fantom (African Woman)" is a lolloping, organ-heavy take on an old Afro-funk gem. Meanwhile, "All The Way" is a string-laden sprint through peak-time disco pastures and "Prelude" is a groovy, pitched-down take on arguably one of the greatest disco records of all time.

Review: If low-lung and druggy drag-house is your thing, then look no further than this new jam, "Psycho X Girlfriend" from veteran American DJ Eddie Amador. Clocking in at nine minutes, the tune boasts a relentless bass loop, campy vocals and samples, jazzy chords and searing hi hats. Elsewhere, remix-wise, Ardalan delivers a spectacular, skippy minimal-house rework whilst CJ Jeff gets even heavier and deeper with his sparse and trippy percussive version of the mantra-like 6am.

Review: London based online magazine The Ransom Note launched their record label back in early 2016 and are now onto their tenth release. They continue their search for the finest dance music around the globe and serve up a 'carnival-ready curveball' here with 'the sleazy, Ghanaian Afro-Ghetto-Techno-Pop that is Bryte's word-of-mouth classic' entitled "I Like Your Girlfriend". Originally surfacing on YouTube dance videos, the low quality video rip of Bryte's 'bizarre' lyrics over Gafacci's grime/afro house beat has been popular with tastemakers such as Bok Bok, Mixpak and Gang Fatale. Coming from Accra's Azonto dance scene, where tracks are produced in makeshift home studios then swapped through social media apps on smartphones, this track has long remained a holy grail. The label claim that this is quite possibly the first Azonto track to be released on vinyl!

Laroye - "Best Girlfriends" (dub mix) - (6:15) 123 BPM
BRS - "Chance Not Choice" (Frank Situation remix) - (4:34) 120 BPM Hot
Review: The idea behind Situationism's new "2Up2Down" series is devilishly simple. Each volume contains two tracks a piece from a pair of artists, in the case of this debut release West Country stalwarts BRS and Brighton-based Frenchman L'Aroye (real name Thomas Arroyo). It's the latter who kicks things off with "Best Girfriends (Soulful Mix)", a superb, gospel-sampling number that adds layers of rich instrumentation to a wonderfully bumping beat. Arroyo returns later in the EP with a groove-based Dub Mix that wisely makes more of his ear-catching synth stabs and the killer bassline. BRS's "Chance Not Choice" is a little more loose-limbed and synth-heavy than some of their cuts, sitting somewhere between proto-house, electro and deep house. Frank Situation's accompanying remix smartly re-casts it as a sprightly chunk of synth-heavy nu-disco.

Review: Two heroes of the new breed kick off a new mix series for Jamie Jones' esteemed Hot Creations imprint. Jones began Paradise at DC10 (Ibiza) five years ago and it's gone on to be a huge success, inviting the biggest names in the business to come play alongside his crew of residents. The first mix is courtesy of Toronto's Nathan Barato, a frequent collaborator with local heroes such as Carlo Lio and The Junkies and whose career has been on the rise with releases on Cajual, Saved, Circus and Defected. Highlights include the Derrick Carter classic "Where Ya At?" (Mix Originale), Makam's brooding "Loleatta" and Jared Wilson's rusty acid odyssey "Girl, I'm Waitin". UK talent Patrick Topping this year completed his third summer as resident at DC10 in Ibiza for Paradise. Here Topping showcases the sound and style of his sets with high energy from the word go. His mix features several of his own productions guaranteed for maximum dancefloor impact, as well as Metaboman's lo-slung and exotic "Next Please" through to Dave Clarke's massive remix of Jark Prongo's "Movin Thru Your System".

What we do know however is that we have seven prime disco cuts to choose from. Highlights include the sultry psychedelic disco of "Kiss", the rousing diva house of "Night Visions" and the eccentric percussive meltdown that is "Girlfriend From Chat".

Review: Having started out as a remix-orientated project, the Tuff City Kids pairing of Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer are increasingly being regarded as producers of original club ready material. Since debuting in high profile fashion with a EP for Ostgut sub-label Unterton last year, the hirsute pairing have grace both Live At Robert Johnson and Sven Vath's Cocoon with original material. A debut on Delsin's house focused series seems right in line with the Tuff City Kids trajectory and their talents for hard-edged yet melodic house productions are on full display with the Roby Tease EP. Lead track "HFS" sets the tone perfectly with blissful textural touches that feel like a Lauer trademark lent a sense of subtle brutishness by the rise and tide of the rhythmic elements, while "Wendy (Girlfriend 43 Piano Mix)" is a contrast of 90s piano house and more steely contemporary techno. Janson and Lauer's production versatility is further demonstrated with final cut "Reeze" that operates at a slower tempo that showcases the well-defined drums and snares, ramshackle percussive flourishes and juddery bass.

Review: Four years have passed since Ikonika last dropped a body of work this size on us. And boy is she making up for lost time.... Instantly hitting with warmth and humour on "Girlfriend" she sideswipes us into a vast musical world where dots are joined between west coast funk, grime and R&B with stark linear style. From the sensual stutters and swoons of "Noblest" to the grainy, immersive Boards Of Canada-style "Do I Watch It Like A Cricket Match?" by way of the rich juicy west coast funk elements of the otherwise barbed "Lossy" and delicate futurist soul of "Hazefield", this is the warmest and most expressive Ikonika has sounded so far.... And it sounds amazing. Distractions are good for the soul, right?

Review: While he might not be a name to receive all the latest hype and background chatter, the UK's Mikey B has been a strong presence on the wider bass scene throughout the last ten years. Coming through with the first mutations of grime into dubstep, the man has been perfecting and refining to achieve the diversity of sounds found on this latest LP. Evolution is a journey, or rather, a DJ set in and of itself; all sorts of bass squelching can be found across its seventeen bangers, all of which have their roots firmly locked onto the dancefloor. In fact, play this whole damn killer out at a party, and you don't even need a DJ. Hybrid cuts for the modern ear - yes, yes, Mikey!

Review: Dr Cryptic has been knocking out forward thinking bass music for ten years now and is a well-respected player on his local Sheffield scene. Releasing through his own (and spectacularly named) Chip Butty label, this homage to his hometown is a blisteringly thrilling three tracker. "Aggy" sums up that heady Friday night vibe with 4 x 4 beats, wobble heavy basslines and ravey stabs. "Tuff" is even tougher with pounding sub bass, evil synths and digital bleeps galore. The best is kept til last though, with "Girlfriend" almost adding an element of funk to a killer male vocal and melodic pads.

Review: Since signing with Studio Barnhus in 2018, Bella Boo (real name Gabriella Borbely) has released a couple of quirky, off-kilter EPs in the Swedish label's trademark hard-to-pigeonhole style. Here the Los Angeles based delivers her debut album, an expansive nine-track affair that shifts shape at regular intervals. After beginning with the lightly Afro-tinged vocal deep house pulse of "Can't Leave You Like This", she breaks up the beats on rolling workout "She's Back", offers up some downtempo nu-jazz on "Tuesday", squelches her way through contemporary deep hip-house number "Hotel Europa", goes on an ambient diversion via "Stars", and doffs a cap to Floating Points' early works on the jazzy but acid-fired wonder that is Axel Boman hook-up "Do The Right Thing".

Review: Following inspired outings on D.KO, Let's Play House and Flux, Robin Lazore returns to RTCT Records after a three-year absence. The Bordeaux-born producer is in formidable - and we'd argue, surprisingly forthright - form from the off, tweaking his TB-303 mercilessly on the early '90s stadium house-goes-Chicago jack intensity of 'Amusez-Vous Bordel' before adding angular acid lines and razor-sharp hardcore stabs to a bouncy electro beat on 'Trust Yourself (Rave Mix)'. Elsewhere, 'Final Battle' is string-laden disco-house on steroids, Enfant Lune Sous Acid' is a bouncy slab of disco-house positive with added acid attacks, and 'Song For My Next Girlfriend' is a gorgeous instrumental hip-hop head-nodder that's as positive as a surprise tax rebate.

Review: Hold up - Sound Pellegrino crew inside! Number three in their Sound Pellegrino Presents SNDPE series and as per usual, it's jam packed full of killers from both label casuals and loosely affiliated clan members. As the name suggests, the sound is inherently raw and gritty, direct from the gutter and packing enough punch to blow your system out. House, ghetto, bass, you name it, there's something in here for everyone and if you're into the Night Slugs end of the spectrum, then look no further! Toyc's "Analog Drums" is particularly gnarly thanks to its gritty backbone, but it's all highly alluring and comes heavily recommended. Cop it, son!
