American Dream
Review: A classic of late-'90s progressive house, and boasting not one but two samples from the American Beauty soundtrack, Jakatta (aka Joey Negro) retools "American Dream" on this new release from Z Records. More tightly focused modern house remixes are the order of the day - with Supernova working those familiar chimes over a jacking house beat, while Different Gear cranks up the bpm's for a heavy main room groove-fest.

American Dream
American Dream (Andre Crom & Chi Thanh remix) - (7:04) 124 BPM Hot
Review: Joey Negro's Thomas Newman-sampling classic from 2000 just keeps on giving. Here we find Berlin duo Andre Crom and Chi Thanh dissecting it down to its very element and rebuilding it over a bulbous bass groove. Teasing us with a spliced, diced version of the hook, it's not until the breakdown that the shivering soul of the original sample is allowed to breathe. A fine lesson in groove dynamics and a cool house music history lesson, this remix is nigh-on perfect.

Visions (The Remixes)
Review: David Russell Lee has an impressive number of pseudonyms at his disposal, from Joey Negro to Sessomatto and Agora, but he appears this time under his Jakatta alias for a humungous remix compilation of his Visions work. There a plenty of names and bangers on here, from the almighty Photek who gives "So Lonely" a balearic spin, to Layo & Bushwacka's tripped-out remix of "My Vision" and even Blu Mar Ten's sultry and minimalistic D&B re-spin. There's too much quality for us to give everything away and spoil it for your hearing pleasure - dig in!

Joey Negro Presents: 30 Years Of Z Records
Various
Review: Remarkably, three decades have now passed since Dave Lee AKA Joey Nergo inaugurated his label, Z Records. To mark the occasion, Lee has compiled this suitably epic, 44-track retrospective. There are plenty of big tunes and underground anthems present- see Jakatta's "American Dream", Raven Maize's "The Real Life", The Sunburst Band's "Everyday" and Doug Willis's "Spread Love" - as well as some of the veteran DJ/producer's favourite catalogue cuts and some slept-on gems. Throw in a string of memorable remixes - think Ame's remix of Akabu's "Phuture Bound", Grant Nelson's vintage rub of Z Factor's "Gotta Keep Pushin" and Joey Negro's revision of Patrice Rushen disco classic "Haven't You Heard" - and you've got a brilliant retrospective of one of house and disco's most consistent labels. Don't sleep!

Z Records Presents Ibiza 2022
Dave Lee / Various
Review: As usual, Z Records' annual compilation of catalogue tracks doing business over on the White Isle is packed to the rafters with high-grade dancefloor treats. It opens with a sweltering Dave Lee and Harry Romero mix of Z Factor's '90s house classic 'Ride The Rhythm' and ends with Lee's string-laden disco rework of Foreal People's 'Does It Feel Good To You'; in between, you'll find an attractive mixture of bouncy Afro-boogie revivalism (Emmaculate's extended mix of 'Dougswana' by Dave Lee as Doug Willis), reworked Z Records classics (Atjazz giving a classic-but-percussive deep house feel to Jakatta's 'American Dream'), super-soulful house (Wipe The Needle),driving disco-house (Prospect Park) and breezy piano house (Sean McCabe's 'Italo Piano' mix of Soul Dhamma). As the old clich? goes, this is genuinely "all killer, no filler".

In Our Groove
Mickey More / Andy Tee / Various
Review: Top-level disco/house fusionists and Groove Culture Records chiefs Micky More and Andy Tee have been let loose in the Z Records archive. The result is a fine compilation that combines some of their favourites from the long-serving label's catalogue with a sextet of remixes the duo has prepared specially for the collection. If you've been following their work, you'll know exactly what to expect, namely peak-time ready, soul-fired cuts that combine authentic disco instrumentation (horns, strings, guitars, bass etc) with rolling house beats and plenty of life-affirming vocals. Highlights are naturally plentiful, with their trio of Sunburst Band remixes, Masters At Work's classic, Nuyorican Soul style remix of The Blackbyrds' 'Mysterious Vibes' and Frankie Knuckles (RIP) and Eric Kupper's 'Directors Cut' mix of Sunburst Band's 'The Secret Life of Us' all standing out.

Dave Lee's 2022 Essentials
Dave Lee ZR / Various
Review: Dave Lee's annual 'Essentials' comps, which serve as a record of what he's been producing, playing, remixing and releasing over the course of that year, are never less than essential. 2022's edition, which boasts 20 club-ready future classics, is no exception. There's not enough space to list all of the high-grade house, disco and boogie gems on show, but our picks of a very strong bunch currently include Grant Nelson's superb, subtly garage-tinged rework of Omar collaboration 'Starlight', Birdee's terrific, piano-powered disco-house revision of 'Do What You Feel', Doug Gomez's breathlessly percussive version of Kabbala's 'Ashewo Ara', Jean Aubergine's insatiably funky tweak of his Amy Douglas-featuring collaboration with Lee, 'Disco Numberwang', and Jusa's Rhodes-heavy jazz-funk club jam 'Musa'. Genuinely "all killer, no filler".

Review: End of year reflections... For some labels it's just a re-hash of familiarity. For others it's a chance to really celebrate the breadth of releases. Negro's Z Records definitely falls in the latter category as we're dazzled with disco and funk sciences through the ages: From cheeky edits of disco classics (Lady Aya's "Shake Your Body") to rare funk jams like Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers "Back It On Up" (taken from Paul Phillips ace Under The Influence album) via more straight up funky house work-outs Jakatta's "Scattering Stars" and Supernova's superb futurisation of "American Dream".

In At The Deep End (mixed by Andreas Saag)
Andreas Saag / Various
Review: Throughout his long career, Swedish producer Andreas Saag has flitted between deep house and nu-jazz, crafting a melodic, musically rich and soul-flecked trademark sound. He's a good choice, then, to compile and mix a collection of Z Records' deeper moments. There's much to admire on this unmixed version (Saag's mix is included as a bonus cut), from the flowing keys and fluid grooves of the Swede's own remix of The Sunburst Band v Atjazz's "When The Lights Meet The Sky", to the string-laden beauty of Andre Lodeman's rework of Akabu's "Another World". Highlights come thick and fast, with further notable selections from JD73 (remixed brilliantly by Tornado Wallace), Jupiter Beyond, The Sunburst Band (reworked by Recloose) and, of course, Joey Negro.

Review: Z Records annual Ibiza compilation is a much-loved institution, intended by Joey Negro as a companion for those heading out there this summer or for those listening at home in the less Balearic UK. With a 22-song tracklist it'll take all summer to get through it, but what a summer! Highlights include Negro's collaboration with the mighty Horse Meat Disco, "Candidate For Love", the raw disco-not-disco gem "Crystal Lover" and the simply gorgeous forlorn house of "Everybody Wants Something". So, another great season then!

Z Records presents Ibiza 2013

Review: It's that time of year again when Joey Negro unveils his label's choicest cuts for the latest season on the White Isle. As usual it's a selection of both quality and quantity (22 tracks in all) and highlights include the laser-disco-house of Doug Willis' "Spread Love", the linear stomp of The Sunburst Band's "Journey To The Sun" and Munk's cheeky hi-NRG rework of "Do you Dream In Colour".

Review: Covering the many guises of Dave "Joey Negro" Lee, Z Records compile some of the British house don's most 'beefa-shaped moments on this new, 25-track collection. Recent delights, such as his collaboration with Gramaphonedzie ("No Sugar") and his more soulful Doug Willis project ("Music Speaks Louder Than Words") mix up against classics such as "The Real Life" (done under Lee's "Raven Maise" alias) and tribal-house anthem "American Dream" - here represented with the extended "Different Gear" mix. Look out also for The Revenge's excellent edit of the disco bomb "Kilimanjaro" by Letta Mbulu.

Joey Negro presents It's A Summer Groove Vol 3

Review: According to the law of weather, it's not officially summer until Joey Negro releases his annual compendium of sun-kissed funk, soul, house and electronica. Ergo, all rubbish weather you've experienced so far this season is down to this not coming out until mid August! Better late than never eh? And with cuts as beautiful and deep as Agora's flute-flicking "Montayo", Masters At Work's broken beat analysis of The Blackbyrds "Mysterious Vibe" and Supernova's Nalin & Kane style remix of Jakatta's "American Dream" the rain and grey skies have been worth it. 24 cuts, all unmixed for your DJ pleasure, squeeze as much out of this season and jump on this now.

Z Records Presents The Ibiza Closing Party
Various
Review: No, don't worry, it's not the Ibiza closing party... Ibiza remains open all year and promoters are already organising line-ups for 2013. This is the label boss Joey Negro's personal closing party. And having spun tunes there for well over 20 years, he knows how to select the very best party tracks. No-nonsense funky house business, then. With a strong nod to the bass influence in today's dancefloor patter, too. Cuts like Z Factor's "Sound In The Air" and Spirit Catcher's "Absolute Drop" both reference the old while sounding band up to date with crisp, vibrant production qualities and dominant bottom end. There's plenty of Joey's own material here. Appearing in his many guises expect to find an ace rework of Jakatta's "American Dream", a handful of Doug Willis flavours and a rather fetching Kaytronix remix of Akabu. The party season might be over, but it'll always be open in your heart if you invest in this...
