Review: Go-go has always been one of American dance music's most overlooked genres. Given its roots lie in Washington DC, rather than music metropolises such as New York, Detroit or Chicago, that's perhaps unsurprising. This collection from Joey Negro offers a good starting point for those unfamiliar with the style, showcasing the work of scene stalwarts like Chuck Brown and a string of lesser-known names. It also impressively tracks the development of the sound, from a regional variant of funk to a an electro and hip-hop inspired crossover style in the early 1980s. Even if you've got a passing interest in go-go, it's worth a gander; as usual, Lee has unearthed some brilliant unheralded gems.

Review: It has been quite a year for the Toolroom institution. Celebrating their 15th birthday last year, they weren't ones to rest on their laurels, instead going full steam ahead with a bunch of genre defining compilations this year. But most importantly they have been instrumental in the comeback of funky house after a 20 year dormancy, with killer releases by the likes of Weiss, Cashio and boss man Mark Knight himself. Review: While most of us have never heard of Winston, fellow dusty-fingered record collectors hold him in high esteem. On his contribution to Z Records' essential "Under The Influence" series it's easy to see why. His selections are uniformly superb and, bar a handful of cuts, almost unknown to anyone outside the serious collecting community. For proof, check the celebratory, slap-bass propelled disco-funk of Doug Payne and Polygon's "Holiday", the heady, high-octane disco thrills of Expose's "I Just Wanna Dance With You", the low-slung early funk-rap headiness of Jungle Band's "Jungleland (Part 2)" and the wickedly percussive salsa-disco heaviness of Suave's "Salsa Gon Gitcha". In other words, it's a killer collection of top-notch cuts that you'll never have heard before. What's not to like?

Review: Back in the mid 1970s, young engineer Terry 'T.K' Kane and Harry Stone joined forces to launch a studio and record distribution business in Miami. It would spawn a huge number of in-house labels, and even greater number of funk and disco releases, and even a string of million-selling artists. Given this legacy, it's little surprise to see Athens of the North paying tribute to the funk side of Henry Stone's impressive legacy with this superb collection. While there are a few tried-and-tested cuts to be found - see the T Connection and Little Beaver cuts - for the most part The Miami Sound focuses on more obscure - but no less hard-hitting - gems from the likes of Jonny K, Stevens & Foster and Leno Philips.

Review: Ibiza institution Cafe Mambo needs little introduction. Starting as a sunset hangout, it soon became a perfect venue for the island's pre-parties and has developed an iconic status worldwide. Review: Glasgow Underground's contribution to the 2020 Miami sampler mountain may well induce feelings of deja vu: not only does it include multiple tracks from label boss Kevin McKay recent much-vaunted 'No Samples...' covers album, but much of the rest is in a similar vein, with McKay and a selection of musical buddies reworking a load more house classics to bring them in line with 21st Century production values. Review: It's sexytime down Dirt Crew HQ, as the esteemed German label gathers together a selection of deep house cuts guaranteed to get you staring lovingly into the eyes of your nearest and dearest with the pie-eyed look of a post-orgasmic teenager. Review: 36 Hertz Recordings are back on track and back on beat this week, with a fiery compilation that isn't the longest out there but surely one of the hardest. Every single cut on this album is an explosion of vibrant jungle breaks and moody subterranean sonics, courtesy of some big names like DJ Hybrid, NC-17 and recent Metalheadz feature Jem One. The latter's track is especially good, a featherweight intro leading on into an aggressive, rambunctious slice of feverous energy, Jem One's recent foray onto the OG imprint of jungle music apparent in every bar. Perfectly timed to fit in with the new wave of junglist pressure coming out across the UK, 36 Hertz have hit the nail on the head with this one.
