Review: Chicago's Kenya is a housewife who became an esteemed Christian soul singer following a 'cosmic enlightenment' that showed her the way. Having heard "Let Me" (from her My Own Skin album), Joey Negro has signed her up, enlisting Sean McCabe to rework the tune for the right kind of dancefloors. Clocking in around nine minutes, the "vocal mix" a smooth and luxurious ride through vintage jazzy house, dripping in golden-toned Fender Rhodes chords. Elsewhere there's the aquatic sounding '90s retro house of the "Let Me Out Dub" and the Brand New Heavies-esqe organic jazz-funk of the "Classic Soul Mix". Chic.

Review: Midnight Riot do their bit to address the much-discussed gender imbalance in dance music with a 25-track collection featuring an almost entirely female line-up (though a few possessors of Y-chromosomes do sneak in as collaborators). With big names like Kathy Brown, DJ Paulette, Rowetta, Caron Wheeler, Sulene Fleming and Natasha Kitty Katt nestling up alongside a host of more up-and-coming artists, the quality standard is high throughout, with the musical emphasis largely on good-time, Saturday night house and disco vibes, though there a few more gently paced moments - notably in the form of covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo' - while Paulette & Massey serve up a pleasing dose of acid on 'Sheroes'.

Review: The annual summer edition of Reel People Music's 'Soulful, Deep & Dope' series, which offers up tracks they're pushing over the Ibiza party season, is always packed to the rafters with joyous, sun-splashed treat. 2023's offering is one of the strongest yet. Amongst the 20 tracks on show you'll finda blinding, Prince and P-funk-inspired Opolopo revision of Mother's Favourite Child and Saeeda Wright's 'Purple Funk', a lusciously deep, soulful and groovy Dennis Ferrer rub of Reel People and Angela Johnson's 'Can't Stop', a sensationally summery Jimpster re-wire of Thakzin and Ray T's 'Don't Let Me See' that sounds like vintage Atjazz, a frankly brilliant Crackazat remix of broken beat stalwart Modaji's 'Things U Do For Me', and a suitably starry collaboration between DJ Spinna and Phonte ('Tonight We Ride').

Review: With the 2016 Ibiza summer season in full swing, Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee has gathered together a bumper collection of label tracks that are currently doing the business on the White Isle. There are few surprises amongst the 28 selections - think swinging piano-house, soulful grooves, sun-kissed broken beat, contemporary disco reworks and synth-heavy boogie-house - but the quality threshold remains remarkably high throughout. Highlights include Lee's glistening 2016 re-rub of his vintage Doug Willis anthem "Spread Love", a deliciously loose and synth-laden Fouk rework of The Sunburst Band, the bad-ass boogie business of Spirit Catcher's "Rendez-Vous", and a killer 1995 rework of Fonda Rae's "Over Like A Fat Rat" from U.S house legend Victor Simonelli.

Review: Hallelujah it's DJ Spen with a new testament of vocal heavy, diva-praising gospel house. Justify yourself with tracks by The BlackKnight and soulful piano numbers by Assurance. With the compilation pumping in around the 130bpm mark there's "Heaven" to be found in the sweet high notes of a Stacy Kidd, Tasha LaRae & DJ Spen' collaboration, and according to Byron Stingily "It's all Jesus". In remix form Spen's best work here is best found in DJ Booman's "God's Got It" and a whole host of others For those introduced to gospel house by Robert Hood's Floorplan project, this is your next stop to righteousness.

Review: Dave Lee's Z Records imprint has always been a reliable source of the sort of grandstanding house, soulful garage and disco-flecked grooves that require strong vocals. Lee, of course, is a past master at this kind of thing, and his 20-plus year career has seen him forge links with many legendary vocalists. This compilation celebrates those 'divas' - there are notable appearances from Taana Gardner, Gwen Guthrie, Thelma Houston, Michele Weeks and Taka Boom - by showcasing some of their best work for Z. There's some great material peppered throughout, from the classic disco-soul of the Sunburst Band's "In The Thick of It" and "Everyday", to the block party electrofunk of Kola Kube's cover of Carly Simon's "Why".
