Review: London based Alien Disco Sugar produces quality remixes, edits and original tracks. He returns on Greece's Digital Wax Productions with Gravity Stars & More Sugar - The Best Of Vol 2. From the lo-slung boogie of "Forgetin", the pure disco inferno of "Feel Like I Feel", the massive horns arrangement of "Funkin' Around" or the classic soulful vibes of "Your Love" - this collection of classics is timeless and all have been respectfully edited by the man - just the way we like it. It's a whopper of a compilation, with 26 tracks all in all. And if that was not enough, they are all mixed to perfection on not one, but two continuous mixes - which had us boppin' about the office all day and will no doubt have you dancin' the nights way too - well into 2018! Other than a release by Frey Bentos, Digital Wax has served as an outlet solely for Alien Disco Sugar throughout the better part of 2017.

Between them, they run the gamut from scorching, bottom-heavy funk (Evil Smarty's 'The Get Down', Dave Allison's 'Ain't Nuthin To It', Loshmi's 'Drugstore') to deep n' soulful house (Tonbe's 'Broken Heart'), via Gradient Logic's glacial boogie nouveau and jazzier cuts like Dave Allison's 'Trade Off' and Tonbe's 'Something Jazzy'. Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

Review: With 30 tracks to choose from, you certainly can't fault this latest collection of re-edits from Manolo Brigante's Vienna-based WE MEAN DISCO!! stable on the value for money front. You might, admittedly, question whether a collection that packs reworkings of Chic's 'Good Times', Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On', James Brown's 'Sex Machine' and Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer', among others, can really set sail under the 'deep disco' flag and keep a straight face. But never mind that, because there are some very playable remakes on offer here for sure, ranging from the lightly beefed-up to the truly transformational - as well as plenty of less obvious sources to keep the 'spotters happy.

Review: While the Salty Vibes title makes us think of rum old seadogs, there's little nautical about Alien Disco Sugar's latest expansive collection of re-edits. As usual, though, there's plenty to enjoy across the seven tracks, beginning with the hard-worked filters, impassioned vocals, and grandiose disco bump of opener "Sexy Sugar". Other highlights include two versions of string-drenched mirrorball anthem "People All Over The World", the looped slap bass and razor-sharp guitars of "Do It Good" (a killer version of a Rahaan favourite), and closer "Don't Turn Your Back On Love", a house-friendly re-work of a shimmering, synth-laden '80s soul bumper.

Review: Not to be confused with the techno-minded Dutch label of the same name, this Deep Sense is based out of Mexico, they have a penchant for the funkier side of the dance and the cheekier side of edit culture. They proved it on their inaugural voyage in November 2014, and they're proving it once again right here... Kicking off with the sax-massaging jack-jam "The Road To Kalakuta" the whole album is an instant party full of sassy sonic surprises. Highlights include the dusty vinyl crackles and heaving harmonics of Rafael Fernandez's "Nothing's Changed", the epic synth-slapping cosmicity of Funk My Jesus "24K", the classic funk guitar squeezes of Chuggin Edits "We Got The Funk". And that's just a handful of party peals to be harvested from this 16-track heavy album. Bon voyage indeed!
