Review: Bristol's The Allergies (aka Moneyshot and Rackabeat) blew people's minds with their debut LP, As We Do Our Thing and now they are back with follow up, Push On. We're used to the pair effortlessly fusing funk, Northern soul and big beats but this time round they've expanded their horizons to also feature hip-hop, with UK MC veteran, Dr Syntax (The Mouse Outfit, Foreign Beggars) joining the fray. Some of the many highlights include the retro soul stomp of "Entitled To That", the Fatboy-goes-back-to-sixties Southern soul of "Since You've Been Gone" and the clavinet-driven funk of "Get Down On You".

Review: As ever, the Bomb Strikes imprint delivers an awesome package to us with this brand new 25 track compilation entitled 'Funk N' Beats Vol. 5', To be honest, it's exactly what it says on the tin as The Allergies head up waves and waves of funkadelic rhythms and crunchy riffs. For us the highlights have to be the futuristic drum processing and subtle percussive movements of 'Loose Gardner' from Flevans, along with the classic breakbeat fusion of 'Fire' remixed by Smoove but originally produced by the Renegades Of Jazz. With the sheer depth of the project it's easy to get lost within the tracklisting, which is always a good sign on a large scale compilation.

Review: Ten years ago, Eskimo Recordings emerged from Ghent, as an outlet for mix albums from hometown heroes the Glimmers. Since then, the label has gone on to be a leading light on the nu-disco and nu Balearic scenes. Fittingly, this expansive tenth anniversary set was put together by the Glimmers, and features two solo DJ mixes featuring label highlights aplenty. For DJs, the real bonus is the huge selection of unmixed tracks on display, which adeptly showcases the depth and variety of the label's output. Highlights are plentiful, from the woozy Scandolearic vibes of Lindstrom & Prins Thomas and brilliance of early Aeroplane, to the sun-bright dream pop of Hiem, and the bouncing dancefloor groovery of LHAS Inc.

Review: Jazzman have surpassed their own reputation for digging skills with this latest reissue. Apparently the reason that this early '70s album is so rare is because it was made as some sort of tax scam and was never intended to actually reach the general public at all! The most baffling thing is though, is just how good the album is: ten tracks of authentic soul and funk played by a band of Bronx-based musicians who were literally playing like no one was listening. Thankfully, they are now.

Review: Go-go has always been one of American dance music's most overlooked genres. Given its roots lie in Washington DC, rather than music metropolises such as New York, Detroit or Chicago, that's perhaps unsurprising. This collection from Joey Negro offers a good starting point for those unfamiliar with the style, showcasing the work of scene stalwarts like Chuck Brown and a string of lesser-known names. It also impressively tracks the development of the sound, from a regional variant of funk to a an electro and hip-hop inspired crossover style in the early 1980s. Even if you've got a passing interest in go-go, it's worth a gander; as usual, Lee has unearthed some brilliant unheralded gems.

Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.

Review: Juicy Fruit Recordings, besides having a very catchy name, put out catchy music and this time around it's the turn of K-jah, Erbman, SMAN and Vytol to put forth the goods via a selection of remixes. K-Jah's cut is wickedly simple: old-school drum sounds with an arrangement of bouncy bass stabs, all laid out in harmony and all touching on the wave of stripped-back sonics currently coursing through the scene. Vytol takes things darker with his remix of 'Rock Shop', a grating, gargling concoction that wobbles as much as any sick roller. Great collection of tunes here.
