Review: Macca & Melinki are two artists who've really taken off in recent years, the former with his work with Loz Contreras on labels like Shogun, the latter with his own Four Corners imprint and general badassery. Dark Soul is on Fokuz and it's properly sick, with four harsher cuts that show how both of these producers get down. 'Ok' just rolls and rolls, a fluid sense of progression inching in from the constant switch ups and differing bass pulses that form around its solid percussive performance. 'Music is Life' is the heaviest of the bunch, reminding us of Gerra & Stone's 'Arashi' with its choppy bassline and energetic feel. Definitely check this one out.

Review: Melinki has been dishing out the goods on labels like Fokuz for a few years now, as well as running his own 'Four Corners' imprint, but he hasn't done many projects like this. The S.T.L project is a full, album length collection of collaborations with producers all over the scene. T>I is on remix duties for previous Melinki banger Dancehall Sound, flipping it into a spaciously destructive bit of work, whilst HLZ is present on the sub-heavy and drum-excellent 'Nemea'. Softer notes abound on 'It's Over' featuring Macca & Maverick Soul, a soft and deftly rolling vocal slice of liquid action, a trend repeated on 'What's Real' with Low:r. This is an expression of scene strength and an excellent one at that.

Review: As if being one half of Silent Dust and preparing to release their long awaited second album next month wasn't quite enough, the None60 bossman Hobzee can also be found lurking in more liquified, soulful quarters with long time collaborator Zyon Base. Here we find them in their most prolific state as they build a 22 track opus of collaborations and solo pieces. Ranging from delicate emotional tackle ("Night On Earth") to much darker rollage ("Unspoken") to superb elastic funk ("Rock Ya Soul") this covers the full soul spectrum with perfect levels of weight, poignancy and emotion. We're going to need more than one night on this planet to digest these sounds...

Review: Most labels celebrate their 50th or 100th release but Fokuz have never done things by convention, which is what's made them such a unique success story in drum & bass for 17 years. Here we find them celebrating their 80th release (and neatly referencing the work of Quentin Tarantino) with their biggest project to date that stretches two albums, over 30 tracks and some of the biggest names in D&B: Break, Calibre, Technimatic, BCee, Need For Mirrors, the list goes on. If you know Fokuz's output you'll already be on this. If you don't, just jump on the velvet sub rolls of Calibre's remix of Impish, Lenzman's hurricane soul twist of Random Movement or Dreazz & Stal's percussive frenzy "Ethiopian Jungle" and you'll know exactly what's going on right here.

Review: Now in their 22nd year, Fokuz has to be one of the longest running - and certainly the most prolific - drum & bass labels to ever come out of The Netherlands. A prime spot for breaking new talent, and renowned for their glacial, atmospheric liquid sound, the label have that perfect balance of newcomers and established names which is reflected perfectly here on this reflective look-back over 2020. Highlights include Command Strange & Cnof's dusty soul delight 'Rainy Day', the twinkling cosmic funk of Maverick Soul's 'We In Here' and the shimmering soul of Askel & Elere's 'Honestly'.

Review: One of the most iconic and prolific labels in the D&B scene, Fokuz Recordings manage to simultaneously show off the best in the game whilst supporting new talent and the results are fantastic. This album - a recap of 2018 - exemplifies their approach. It's full of big names and bigger tracks, including S.P.Y's remix of 'Always Yours' by Macca & Loz Contreras, Artificial Intelligence's remix of 'String City' by Lenzman and Calibre's remix of 'Forward Thinking' by Satl. Whilst these are obviously great, the bigger story lies in the lesser-known participants and their ability to pull at your heartstrings. DJ Ransome, Edlan, Soligen amongst others all come seriously correct on this LP, turning it into a seriously good release.

Review: Tali is an unsung hero of the D&B vocalist community, one of those low-key artists who doesn't put out music every other week but who consistently drops incredible stuff. Love & Migration is a D&B fans dream: sick vocals over the top of a variety of different producers. 'Paper Wasp' features DRS on joint vocal duties and the effortless nature with which the pair of them inject the vocal element to a rolling Roygreen & Protone beat makes it a highlight of the album. Satl brings his signature floating style on 'Language' in a Perez-esque bit of airy goodness; Hospital star Degs joins her on 'Reunion' amidst funky guitar flicks; and 'Silhouettes' with DLo and Anthony Kasper takes things darker in spectacular fashion. This is a truly wicked LP from not just Tali but a broad section of the D&B scene.
