Review: Black Barrel's been a busy boi! Currently flexing on Dispatch and Headz, not to mention his hyperactive Leo Cap dubstep alias, this man's a machine and has been for some years now. The best thing is that the quality is always consistent. Four more cases in point: the hurricane soul and eerie emotion of 'Side That You Can't Hide', the rattling airy drums and subtle rave references of 'Love Line', the deep smouldering soul of 'New Era' and the timeless Soul:r style finale 'One Day'. There's no hiding from vibes like these.

Review: This is a proper dubstep release coming for your ears from Sub Audio, as they've gone down the always entertaining route of having two remixers do a rework of each track on a single. The originals this time around are from Soukah, who has crafted up two stunners. The first, Life Without Meaning' is built upon a gentle rise, a moonlit walk, up the mountains and into a world of fireflies and celestial arpeggios. It's a seriously vibey tune and it's done justice by Kodama on the remix, who stretches things out and gives it all that extra oomph in the kick drums. 'You Can Run Much Faster' is equally spooky, with eerie ambience coming from its whispered sample and stretched out piano notes, a vibe taken to extremes on Ourman's awesome, loping remix. Top work from the Sub Audio crew.

Review: Tristan Hallis brings his "progressive traditionalist" DJ Boring project to Running Back for the very first time. It's a big look for Gerd Janson's label and Hallis has duly delivered a quintet of treats in his now trademark style. 'Beautiful Strangers', a dreamy, tactile and bleeping chunk of pitched up vocal-sporting dancefloor bliss, kicks things off, before Hallis opts for a bouncier, piano-sporting vibe on the rushing peak-time joy of 'Can't Fix a Broken Heart'. There's more of a sub-heavy, garage-influenced swing to 'When I'm With You (featuring Jasoer Tygner)', while 'False Attraction' is a locked-in treat that boasts two lengthy, saucer-eyed breakdowns. Hallis rounds off another rock-solid EP via the lo-fi breaks of 'Memories Fade'.

Review: Given his productivity over the last four years, it's rather a surprise to find that "When You Find A Stranger In The Alps" is Mautits Verwoerd AKA Nachtbraker's debut album. Predictably, the sometime Heist Rand Dirt Crew producer is in fine form throughout, serving up an expansive, 13-track set that effortlessly flits between sparkling, melodious deep house floor fillers ("Flambo", "Randy"), reggae-tinged club tracks ("NSFW"), bouncy techno ("You Can't Run"), soul and disco-inspired mid-tempo shufflers ("The Dream Sequence", "Just Doing My Thing"), funk rock smashers ("Aliens") and a surprisingly large number of ambient interludes and MPC-driven beat-scapes. In other words, it ticks a lot of boxes whilst remaining enjoyable and entertaining throughout.

It's the label's annual state of the (house) nation address and 2018 is no exception. While this year's edition contains a healthy smattering of feel good house - the most impressive exempts being the vocal grooves of Weiss' "Feel My Needs" and Illyus & Barrientos' "MEA" - there are also more adventurous variants on offer. These include Peggy Gou's tweaked acid take on Shakedown's "At Night", the chord heavy Dusky take on KiNK's "Perth" and the cut-up, abstract "Pale Blue Dot" by rising lo-fi house artist Ross From Friends, which demonstrate that this year, Toolroom is thinking outside the box.

Review: Deep In The Jungle Records is a UK jungle imprint that have been making bigger and bigger waves over the past several years, a big part of which is their affinity for fat compilations that straddle numerous sub-genre boundaries and which represent lots of different artists. This next one is about classics and it features artists like Conrad Subs, Kumarachi, DJ Hybrid, Kartoon and more. Conrad Subs is a favourite of ours and his cut, Takeover, is a wicked, deep rolling piece of work that packs a sick bassline, one which makes you think of late-night raving at its finest. This is a top compilation from a star label of the new wave.

Review: We can think of few DJs more suited to compile a retrospective of killer 1990s house and garage than Z Records boss Joey Negro and Fanatix member Neil Pierce. It's perhaps unsurprising then that this follow-up to Negro's admired 2015 compilation is packed to the rafters with must-have treats. There are naturally some suitably big cuts present - see Kerri Chandler's fine mix of N-Joi's "Anthem" and Todd Terry's rub of Martha Walsh's "Runaround" - but for the most part the selections will be new to all but a small collection of veteran US garage enthusiasts. Our highlights include the riff-powered goodness of Slam Mode's "100% Power", Marshall Jefferson's deep dub of Screamin' Rachael's "Rock Me" and the soulful rush of Donald O's "Everything's Gonna Be Alright".

Review: The ever-dependable 'Katakana Edits' series rolls on, and while this latest installment might not win PECOE any deep diggin' brownie points, it does pack some very serviceable dancefloor-friendly reworks of classic cuts from days gone by. Leading the charge for this reviewer is 'Ice & Snow', which does unspeakable but very satisfactory things to Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song', but elsewhere you get a fresh take on 'Jingo', 'Grandmaster Mash' fuses 'White Lines' with chunks of the rap from 'The Message', while 'Bold Sister' revisits James Brown's 'Bold Soul Sister' - leaving only the 60s deep funk source for 'You Can't Hide' unidentified.

Review: This latest album-length excursion by Montenegran nu disco regular Sasha Mitich finds him largely exploring and expressing his love for all things 80s - perhaps never more so than on 'Someone Like You', which could have come straight from the soundtrack of some coming-of-age movie starring at least one of the Brat Pack. Elsewhere, 'Back To Funk' brings the 80s boogie vibes, 'Woman Saying' recalls the likes of Fern Kinney or The Captain & Tenille and 'Your Life' slips in some cheeky Bee Gees bites, but the standout by far is the ultra-funky 'Fancy Dancer', a rework of the Commodores cut of the same name from 1976.

Review: Long-standing German tech-house legend Steve Bug, founder of both Pokerflat and Dessour, returns to the latter label with something a bit special, and likely to satisfy all of your DJ needs. The producing don has taken it upon himself to remix a twelve tunes, all from different artists that have shaped the sound of house and techno as we know it today. You'll find Bug's retouches on artists like Simon Baker, Manuel Tur, and even Lovebirds. However, the special moments come from his sleek Re-Dub of Chez Damier's mythical house bomb "New York Dub", a stripped back edit of Laurent Garnier's "Whistle For Frankie, and the gorgeously deep swells of his remix of "Pensum" by Francis Harris. Masterful, and very much recommended.

Review: DJ Hybrid continues doing bits for the scene as he lays down this massive 31 track selection on Deep In The Jungle. Reflecting exactly where the mother genre is at right now in 2021, he's dug deep for a whole range of flavours, including a few cheeky exclusives. Every track is a banger but you'd be mad not to check Crom and Rider Shafique's theatrical slap-about 'Change', Xav's mind-blowing shock-out '1993', Mrs Magoo & DJ Hybrid's stripped-back and purring 'Back To 96' and the absolutely foul behaviour of Kumarachi & Epicentre with 'Patterns'. Review: Mark Knight's label brings together some of the sounds that were showcased over the course of the ADE. Basement Jaxx kick start the compilation with the stomping disco house of "Never Say Never", while Harry Romero shows that he's not just a US house head. Working with Doorly, he drops "The Truth", a tough techno track, led by heavy claps. The techno influence lingers on Maceo Plex's "Conjure Superstar", which features an unusual combination of rave sirens and sublime, 808 State-style synths. As is the case in the wider electronic world, this reinvention of the past is in abundance on Amsterdam 2014 and apart from Plex's track, the most impressive contribution is Dosem's "Chase the Link", which sounds like a particularly dark version of vintage Lil Louis.

Review: The Deep Dark & Dangerous team really do have a top knack for spotting and crafting high end releases, with this brand new 'Ishtar' album from Abstrakt Sonance being yet another winner. Featuring 17 incredible originals, it's a masterpiece of 140 themes and dubstep influences, from the grizzling reeses of 'Mindstate' and subtle sitar slides of 'From Wallah With Love' to the percussive brilliance of 'Beautiful Time To Be Alive' and system ready sub-marches of 'Deep In The Jungle'. Review: With Valentines Day just around the corner, Editorial changes tack and takes a step into the world of loved-up, slo-mo groovery. It's a smart move. They've got some great up-and-coming producers involved, with Matthew Kyle's pal Joseph Terruel and Aussie moustache man Rocco Raimundo both offering deliciously deep, spine-tingling rubs. The latter's epic, filter-heavy "Looking For You" is arguably one of the best things he's done to date - a sinewy, string-laden disco slow dance that should impress all but the most miserable of disco purists. Heion's "Run" and DJ Steef's "I Can Win" are gorgeous, too, offering loopy, bass-heavy grooves with just the right amount of lip-smacking charm.

Review: Having previously released Orange, Blue, Green and Pink "collections", Eskimo Recordings continues its' colour-coordinated theme with a Yellow compilation. As usual, the collection draws on material from both established names and lesser-known talents, and does a bang-up job joining the dots between hazy Balearic pop, nu-disco, indie-dance and colourful, soft-focus house. While it's all of a high standard, we're particularly enjoying the sparkling dub disco-goes-Balearic flex of Satin Jackets' dub of Du Tonc's "We Can Hold On", the trippy analogue bump of Man Power's "Fisky", the splendid rush of Luxury's baggy disco groover "Breathe", and the camp, Italo-disco thrust of "El Wild" by the brilliantly named Zombies In Miami.

Review: For his third album, coming once again on his own Brooklyn-based Let's Play House imprint, Jacques Renault has decided to flip the script, eschewing the standard album format completely and instead presenting us with what are essentially 23 DJ tools, all hovering around the one- or 1.5-minute mark, plus a couple of 15-minute minimixes thereof ('Sunny Side' and 'Sandy Side'). As such, home listening appeal may be rather limited but with the 23 tracks spanning a range of house, disco and funk moods, creative jocks in need of some fresh loops 'n' grooves for their sets will find much useful ammo here.

Review: Having been announced a few weeks ago via a very well received threethousand.co.uk premiere, Project Allout bring forward this solid project from bassline top dog JG. We kick off with the "almost" title track 'Bring That Dub', which is a slithering bag of grooves, filled with very creative sound design across a range of synths. Following this we have 'I Wanna', which builds with electronic organs, delving into niche style bassline melodies and skippy drum chops, before we hit the more rapid fire bass wobbles of 'Run While You Can'. We finish up with the high pitched electronic patterns of 'I Wanna', putting the finishing touches on a very well thought out four tracker.

Review: For reasons not made clear, the esteemed Gomma label collared Peaches and decided to record some cover versions of tracks from the back catalogue of the iconic Casablanca Records label. Purists might sneer at the mere idea of this concept but the end products are undeniably fun (and its refreshing to hear Ms Nisker actually sing as opposed to, you know, act like Peaches). Here he returns to the latter label with his most significant release yet: a long-awaited debut album made in cahoots with a long list of guest musicians and producers. Review: There's a distinctly old school flavour to this compilation as Thee Cool Cats take to the controls. Patrick Topping's "Forget" sees the fast-rising producer serve up insane rave stabs and diva vocal samples over insistent cowbells and slamming beats, while Catz'n'Dogz mine a different part of 90s music culture. The duo's "Booty Comes First" is inspired by the rude and raucous sound of ghetto house, as pre-orgasmic moans and a slamming rhythm reinforce the vocal that "yo booty comes first". At the other end of the emotional spectrum, Tough Love impress greatly with the acid-laced, soulful house of "Dreams", while the next generation of Detroit techno, fronted by Dantiez Saunderson and working with Altus Project returns to early 90s US house with the vocal-led "I Need You".

Review: Well, the UK's Shifting Peaks have really gone and done it with this latest leviathan of a compilation, an anthology of their best and most wanted from 2010 until now. Inside, there's talent and plenty of club antics bouncing off the wall left, right and centre; with over fifty cuts there's enough to go around and satisfy a whole artillery of bass-heads. Review: Based in Barcelona, Tracy Recordings is helmed by the fashionable trio of Kosmos, Ginebra and Funkmasta. In a short space of time, the label's nasty bass heavy sound has won the affection of the likes of Sinden, Drop The Lime, Top Billin, L-Vis 1990 and Bobmo. This album compiles the best remixes featured on the label so far. Remix highlights include a rough and ready one from Lol Boys, a totally '90s rave one by Broke One, a nasty baile one from Hostage, on sci-fi RnB one from Jimmy Edgar and a glacial Eurotrance one by Seapoint.
