Review: Volume 7 in the series but for once we can't really say "you should know what to expect by now" because what this compilation really goes to show is just what an eclectic and diverse camp the long-running Manchester label has become, with tracks on 'Paper Cuts #7' ranging from the near-ambient Balearica of Aniso Tropics' opener 'Apricot Memorex' to the self-explanatory synth-y stylings of La Guardia de la Luz's 'Trance Aleman de los 90s' via the uptempo strut of Jahn Solo's 'Disco'. So all we can really do is point you in the direction of some standout cuts, which for this reviewer would include D.S.D's luscious 'Just Can't Stop' and Benny Pitcher's 'Transatlantic Motion', which is like a little musical nod to the days when Paper comps were called 'Splinter'.

Review: Four quality house cuts here from Joint4Nine, AKA Bogota, Columbia native Ivan Lozano. Opener 'Be Alright' has echoes of a certain Urban Soul classic in the vocal department (though it's not actually a sample - it's more of a 'feel' thing), a cool synth bassline and some classy sax work, 'Have A Dream' is pure late 80s Chi-town nostalgia and 'Slappin' Basslines' is a nicely wonked-out affair with lots of lovely squelchy 303 bass. The standout to these ears, though, is 'Where Were You When You Heard Acid?', which chugs, squelches, bleeps, whispers and just doesn't stop for (nearly) seven glorious minutes.

Review: Post Industrial Boys is the production alias of Tbilisi, Georgia singer-songwriter George 'Gogi' Dzodzuashvili, who's also part of the Goslab collective, and this is his fourth PIB album in 20 years. Previous long-players have been described variously as leftfield, electronic, experimental, downtempo and ambient: that should give you a few clues as to the sound of this one, which starts with the introspective, biographical title track and takes in a further eight slices of contemplative synth doodlings and half-sung/half-spoken, poetic and very narrative-driven lyrics. Listen closely and you'll hear echoes of Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, as well as 80s 'intellipop' artists such as Black, Furniture or even David Sylvian (in solo mode).

Review: Alan Abrahams' latest full-length excursion as Portable, 'Augmented Dreams', is a concept album of sorts, with the Paris-based South African apparently drawing creative inspiration from "the use of everyday technological advancements to achieve what were once only dreams or visions of past generations". Regardless of the inspiration, it's another terrific album from the long-serving artist - a tactile, evocative and atmospheric excursion full to bursting with memorable moments. For proof, check gorgeous opener 'The Pull of Time', which (like much of the album) joins the dots between deep house and the string-laden synth-pop of Kelley Polar, the gently acid-flecked shuffle of 'Parallax', the hazy dancefloor hypnotism of 'Begin Again', the soft-touch soul of 'I Need You' and the leftfield synth-pop bubbliness of 'Augmented Dreams'.

Review: Get To Know AKA Larry Holcome cut his teeth as the in-house mixing and mastering engineer at Cr2 Records, and made his production debut in the mid-00s with a string of breakbeat releases on labels like Botchit & Scarper and Spin Out Records. None of which would give you any reason to suppose that his latest release, which comes on his own Future Sound Of Then label, would be a dusty, lo-fi, mid-paced Balearic kinda jam that makes extensive use of a Janet Jackson vocal sample, but such is indeed the case. Solid ammunition for all those afternoon, poolside, warm-up and BBQ sets this summer.

Review: Mancunian poet-performer and saxophonist Alabaster DePlume (real name Gus Fairbairn) invited different sets of musicians each day of recording sessions for his latest album Gold, which took place at London's Total Refreshment Centre. They would record the parts of the arrangement, giving DePlume - who produced the record - a far greater array of elements to mix from. After recording more than 17 hours of music, he created a map which dictated the parts of each session, conceptualised on a long scroll of paper with each line representing a reel of analogue tape. Gold is his second album for Chicago indie label International Anthem.

Review: Roam Recordings was set up by Jason 'JP Soul' Peters and Jeni 'Jeniluv' Erickson in 2001, and has since put out records by the likes of Demarkus Lewis, Rhythm Plate, Hesohi and Dino Lenny. For their 100th release/20th anniversary, though, they've avoided the obvious 'best of' route and instead serve up 21 brand new tracks coming from a mix of familiar names (Emperor Machine, DJ Rocca, Tronik Youth) and newcomers. The overall vibe leans towards cosmic and Italo disco, but that's a very broad-brush picture - there are tracks here that could, variously, be filed equally well under house, techno, electro, Balearica or prog. Psychedelic electronic disco at its best.

Review: Last year, London DJ crew and party promotion outfit SlothBoogie delivered one of the compilations of the year, a wonderfully eclectic and on-point set entitled Dancing With Friends. According to the crew, they spent even more time carefully curating this welcome sequel. You can tell, too. Kicking off with the tactile, slow-burn deep house yearning of Soul Won's '96 to Albert Park', the 21-track collection ambles, strides and jogs between soul-flecked deep house (see Kemback's brilliant 'I Know What You're Thinking'), driving nu-disco (Jesse Bru), swirling deep jackers (Erik Ellmann's 'Private Talk'), loopy disc-house haziness (the always excellent Felipe Gordon), jazz-flecked acid squelch-alongs (Pablot), deep space sample house (Sam Irl) and high-octane, peak-time insanity (The Revenge). Simply brilliant.

With the catalogue spanning a decade and a half, there's a fair degree of variety on offer here, from bumpin' garage organ grooves ('So Addicted', 'Destruction') to tropical/tribal workouts ('7 Ways To Love') to shufflin', jazzy deep house ('Organic Deep'), making for an album that should suit lovers of that classic mid-90s house n' garage sound down to the ground.

Review: There's been enough variety and musical detail across Prequel's EPs for Local Talk, Distant Hawaii and Rhythm Section International to suggest that the Aussie artist would be capable of delivering a devastatingly good album or two. Love Or (I Heard You Like Outbreak), his first attempt at a full-length excursion, largely delivers on that promise, delivering an attractive blend of dusty samples, dreamy instrumentation, immaculate beat programming (think hip-hop, deep house, Latin beats, bruk, dancefloor jazz and low-slung disco-funk) and plenty of vivid aural colour. It's a winning combination, with highlights including the peak-time disco-jazz of 'I Tried To Tell Him', the ultra-deep jazz-house epic 'And That's The Story of Their Love', the Latin-bruk haziness of 'Love Is' and the thickset jazz-meets-dancefloor hip-hop flex of 'I'll Never Stop Loving You'.

Review: Next up from EQ Why, we see a full-length powerhouse of an album project landing on Equalized, delivering us no less than sixty original creations, showcasing the full spectrum of footwork and juke music in 2021. Review: Overview are without a doubt one of the biggest success stories of recent years and 2020 has proved to be their biggest yet, with a slew of fantastic releases across their roster of artists. Pretty much that entire crew is represented here and the tracks cover their 2 year history, from early tunes like breakout hit 'Around Me' to brand spanking new cuts like 'Framed' by Klinical and Waeys. Waeys has been an important part of the Overview story and his tune 'Who You Are' with Hadley was one of the first steps in that journey, a ridiculously dirty techy roller with an infectious bounce and a progression that will certainly get your gurn on. Review: Over the last few years, All Day I Dream has successful carved its' own post-progressive house dancefloor niche, largely via a string of singles and EPs that prioritise atmospheric chords, tactile grooves and ear-catching melodies. Here they begin 2021 with a slightly surprising release: a first full-length from one of their cherished artists. The Beauty of a Polaroid ticks many of their usual boxes - shuffling deep house and deep breakbeat drums, picturesque piano motifs, immersive pads, African and South American-influenced percussion here and there - but successfully balances Powel's natural dancefloor urges with tracks tailored to sofa-bound headphone listening. The result is a gorgeously musical and wonderfully melodious set that deserves to be appreciated as one dreamy, life-affirming whole.

Review: Hailing from Mexico Inigo Vontier has graced a number of discofied house labels out there like Chloe's Lumiere Noire and Thomas Von Party's Multi Culti, but it was 2017 when the artist first emerged on Calypso, delivering the label it's third release. He returns to where it all began delivering an the Mexican imprint with a new age ambient album of EBM infused exotica journeying through sweet and subtle synths to organic soundscapes and otherworldly percussion. Expect broken beats and touches of jazz to heavily processed sine waves and harder drum machine aggression. A trip from start to finish.

Review: Lascelle Lascelles has a long musical pedigree: he was playing house at London's Wag club back in the late 80s, and went on to co-found Brand New Heavies before joining NME darlings Compaq Velocet. But what we have here is the second long-player (following on from 2017's 'Blackism') from his Vibration Black Project, for which the primary inspiration here is Afrocentric 70s freeform jazz from the likes of Sun Ra. As such, some of the tracks will be a little out-there for some, while others are really just short skits. But it's an album that's definitely worth approaching with ears and mind open, its finest moments sitting somewhere between trip-hop and 40s noir soundtrack vibes.

Review: This is not the first compilation to drop whose sole aim is to raise funds for NHS Chartities Together - R&S Records and Bass Agenda both delivered similarly epic sets - but "Care4Life" may well be the strongest and most diverse. As you'd expect, each one of the 45 tracks is previously unreleased, and the cast list reads like a who's who of dance music culture. Notable highlights include an ultra-deep, saucer-eyed number from Daniel Avery, an unheard rework of the Chemical Brothers' "Catch Me I'm Falling", a superb revision of Harvey's Locussolus project by Kiwi, Matthew Herbert in jazzy broken beat mode, a rare solo outing from Optimo's JD Twitch, a rip-roaring rave workout from Jas Shaw, and thumping peak-time bangers from Dusky, Eats Everything and Patrick Topping.

Review: Having featured featured on labels like Great Stuff and Sci +Tec, Raul Facio now makes his debut on Senso. "Look At Me When I Think Of You" is a peak-time affair, led by rolling snares, wild acid builds and at its heart, a pumping low end. It's a frenetic affair, but the pace slows somewhat on the title track. There, the young American producer drops a low end that's as menacing as any of label owner Oliver Huntemann's own techy tracks. Remaining in a similar space on the last track Facio, fuses swirling, acrid filters with the kind of pulsating, snaking groove that will resonate at its namesake - "Amnesia".

Review: Glasgow Underground's contribution to the 2020 Miami sampler mountain may well induce feelings of deja vu: not only does it include multiple tracks from label boss Kevin McKay recent much-vaunted 'No Samples...' covers album, but much of the rest is in a similar vein, with McKay and a selection of musical buddies reworking a load more house classics to bring them in line with 21st Century production values. Review: "Perspectives" is a new compilation series from Adaption Music that sees respected and up-and-coming DJs gather together some of their favourite deep house releases. Volume one comes courtesy of Yan Gordo, an artist who has been serving up singles (and a sole album, last year's overlooked "Roller Disco") since 2012. There's plenty to get the juices flowing within his action-packed 20-track selection, with highlights including the bouncy, tech-tinged warmth of Julian Sanza's "London Story", the rolling and melodious goodness of Tom Conrad's "Cascaded Jade" (one of a handful of memorable contributions by the producer), the starry peak-time bounce of Demarkus Lewis's "I Had U First (Roland Nights Mix)" and the U.S garage influenced deep house soul of Gordo's own "Take It Easy".
