Review: Harold Matthews Jr is the Chicago house veteran formerly best known as one-half of Blak Beat Niks. Last year he released his debut album under his real name, 'Peripheral Visions' - a lyrically introspective and deeply personal affair that ran the gamut from deep, soulful house to boogie, neo-soul and broken beat. Now tracks from that album get remixed by the heavy-hitting likes of Glenn Underground, Sean McCabe, Wipe The Needle and Kaidi Tatham. Their reversionings are similarly diverse in musical style, ranging from the laidback, trip-hoppy Sisters & Brothers Mix of 'Who I Am' to the smooth house of Glenn Underground's rub of 'This Place', but rest assured: the soul needle stays firmly in the red throughout!
Review: Platform 23 reunites once more with Vox Man Records to dig deep into their archives and shine a new light on. In the past they have done some mega well loved Alternative Funk compilations which got the label off to a fine start and now they dig into an array of cult cassette releases to bring us treasure from Audiologie N-4 - The Independant Psychedelic Trip and Audiologie 5 et 6 - Ethniques Urbaines. This is music from the avant-garde and post punk scenes that draws on wave, spoken word, dark dub and industrial for its eerie yet alluring charms, all with a real edge. Ethnic, idiosyncratic and psyched out, this is another great overview.
Review: If broken beat can be separated into two broad schools of thought, the soulful, jazzy side and the wonkier, more experimental side - which I've just decided it can - then it's safe to say we're firmly in the former camp with this three-track, six-mix EP from Irish duo Searchlight and friends. 'We Could Be More' features [KSR] and as remixed by Wipe The Needle is an R&B-ish shuffler with strong hints of early 80s electrofunk, Atjazz's rub of 'Can We Go Back' (featuring fellow Dubliner Tolu Makay on vox) is a laidback slice of late-night contemporary soul and Afroforce's mix of 'Breathe' (feat. Tolu Makay and Mark force) brings the soul-jazz vibes. All three remixes come with matching instrumentals.
