Review: File Under Disco: releasing 100% original disco since 2012. Their latest release is by Oh Yeah, who produced the massive "Nothing But The Beat" last year which included a mighty Hot Toddy remix. Now they deliver yet another dancefloor weapon of a track: it's reminiscent of classic Michael Jackson or '80's Motown. Remixes are by Perth's finest Dr Packer: two in fact. The first injects much more funk and dancefloor dynamics into the track, while the dub mix does exactly what it says on the tin. New Zealand's Frank Booker is in top form as always, getting that soulful '70s vibe on and finally Razor 'N Tape's Dicky Trisco & JKriv go for a New York City circa '83 kinda joint: which will take you back to the days of Studio 54.

Review: File Under Disco's "100% original disco music" remit is refreshing in these days of countless re-edits and sample-heavy nu-disco mash-ups. Their latest salvo comes from London's Oh Yeah, whose trademark sound effortlessly blends live drums, bass, guitars, keys and vocals. "Nothing But The Beat" is a strong debut, sitting somewhere between sharp, Chic-style disco, hazy jazz-funk and early '90s acid jazz. The remix package is notably strong, too, with Crazy P man Hot Toddy delivering a pair of reworks. On both he toughens things up a little and adds a few dub disco flourishes, whilst retaining the band's wonderful instrumentation. His Dub, in particular, is superb.

Review: Did you ever get a record come along and think, "I shouldn't really like this, but I do?" That's the vibe this reviewer's getting from this V/A Day By Day EP, which can best be described as delivering on the promise of 80s pop in a way that ACTUAL 80s pop seldom did! From the gently shimmering 'Angelo' and the funk-fuelled, ABC-ish sophisti-pop of 'Darling', to the more soulful 'Tomorrow Night' and 'Feeling Action', there are some seriously classy grooves here that have won the heart of even this confirmed 80s-phobe - check 'em out for yourself and see if YOU can resist.

Review: Having enjoyed a remarkable 2010 that included Onra's superlative album, the LA series of killer ten inches and much more, Dublin imprint All City begin the year with the first in a new series originally mooted by the label bosses back in 2009. Inviting their favourite producers to knock heads and deliver two tracks, All City deliver a statement of intent with Martyn and Mike Slott at the controls with brilliant results! Much like the majority of Martyn's recent work it's pretty hard to categorise "All Nights", his collaboration with LuckyMe's Slott, other than to say it's a techno step flexer that's primed for play in the clubs. Special mention as well, for the prominent usage of cowbell and a vast array of unidentifiable sound effects that add a sonic richness to the track. The next track brings the downtempo vibes of "Pointing Fingers", all reflective textures and soft, dreamlike melodies aided by rattling beat programming and ethereal vocal harmonies. Forward thinking sounds from all involved.

Review: The consistency of In:flux over the lockdown period is something we never seem to be able to keep quiet about, purely because it becomes more impressive with every release that seems to land into the store. This latest helping from Ekula is a perfect example of that as we kick of with the shuffling, breaksy drum works and sizzling sub-bass structures of the title track 'All Night', before 'Afterparty Sunrise' combines with sunshine chords with a more scattered drum design for some fantastic variation in rhythm. Next, 'As I Go' arrives with Ca$tle on collaboration duty, unleashing marching kicks and smooth melodic chimes, reminding us of early Anti-Social radio shows, before we get into a pair of weighty remix creations. Firstly, Dystinkt gives 'All Night' a bit of a hardcore face-lift, upping the energy levels dramatically, followed by the legendary Benton arriving to rework 'Afterparty Sunrise' into a nostalgic party starter. Excellent!

Review: Jack Beats is the production brainchild of scratch DJs Beni G (Mixologists) and Plus One (Scratch Perverts). Cheap Thrills seems to be Jack Beats perfect match with EP releases in 2009, 2010 and now again in 2011. This time, they have teamed up with Beta Recordings label owner John B whose extensive discography is nothing short of impressive. "All Night" is a belter, an inescapable track riddled with funk and groove, jackin' basslines and a classic sounding vocal. The release boasts a remix from dubstep don Skream, who lifts the vocal and utilises some burning electro synth stabs. "Elevator Music" brings the EP to a close with rubber rhythms, tightly sprung beats and rapid percussion.

Review: York-based Tecwaa, a relative newcomer to the scene having made his production debut late last year, comes with five tracks that defy easy categorisation. 'Always & The End' is one-part noir soundtrack to one-part gypsy jazz and one-part stoned psychedelia, 'Night Moves' is essentially an ambient piece but underpinned by 80s-sounding drum (machine) beats, 'Remember The Clear Light' veers towards melodic techno and 'In Shallows' is dark, dusty and almost trip-hop in feel, while a slightly more uptempo remix of 'Always & The End' from Matt Walsh completes a package that's definitely something of a musical oddity, but well worth exploring.

Review: For the sixth instalment in Z Records impeccable "Under The Infliuence" series of crate-digging compilations, boss man Dave Lee (AKA Joey Negro) has turned to fellow London scene veterans Simon and Robin Lee, AKA Faze Action. Their selections are, as expected, superb, mixing their own edits of familiar favourites (Midway's ace "Set It Off" and Mikki's "Dance Lover" for starters) with material that's as obscure and over-looked as you'd expect. Standouts in the latter category include the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco of Bebe Manga, the thrillingly up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements", some superb South American disco from Don Lurio and Michele Claire's lesser-known version of disco favourite "In The Bush".

Review: It may have taken eight years, but Joey Negro has finally got round to putting together a follow-up to his superb Backstreet Brit Funk compilation. Like its predecessor, this sequel shines a light on Britain's under-appreciated musical response to the U.S soul, jazz-funk, disco and electro scenes of the late 70s and early 80s. On the whole, the showcased tracks are altogether deeper selections than those found on volume one, meaning obscure highlights come thick and fast. These include - but definitely aren't limited to - the low-slung disco-funk of Rick Clarke's "Potion", the glassy-eyed breeziness of Paradise's "Stop and Think", the footworker-friendly jazz-funk riot of Touchdown's "Ease Your Mind" and the samba-soaked carnival flavours of "Brazeila" by Brazeila. Oh, and a killer dub of Janet Kay's overlooked Brit-boogie classic "Eternally Grateful" that has never before been released.

Review: With Ibiza's extended summer season almost upon us, Toolroom has served up a suitably epic collection of cuts that it expects to be big on the White Isle this summer. Label boss Mark Knight has provided a trio of DJ mixes ("Poolside", "Club" and "Afterclub") and the unmixed tracks included all fit into these loose categories. There's not enough room to list all of the highlights, but we've been enjoying the funk-fuelled disco-house rush of Illyus and Barrientos' "The One", the sleazy, bass-heavy bounce of Max Chapman's "Steppa", the acid-powered tech-house-jack of Del-30's "Gravity" and the weighty, mind-altering thump of "Low End Theory" by Eli Brown.

Review: As you'd expect, given the label's runaway success over the past few years, there are plenty of very familiar cuts on this 52-track 'best of' from the all-conquering Toolroom, including GotSome's tribal smash 'Nomad Chat', label boss Mark Knight's infuriatingly catchy, flute-driven Shovell collab 'Selecao', Mendo's sample-heavy G-houser 'Mooving' and CamelPhat's remix of Fatboy Slim. But there are plenty of less heavily rinsed gems on offer too, and with tracks from the likes of D.Ramirez, Leftwing & Kody, Dosem, DJ S.K.T and Dale Howard plus reworks of Sterling Void and Todd Terry classics, it's a no-brainer for tech-house jocks on a budget.

Review: Last heard on Midnight Riot, Shit Hot Soundsystem are back on Hot Digits, brandishing three new white hot edits for our delectation. First up is the glistening, thin as a wafer, mid '80s digisoul of "All Night Long" - pure chrome and carpet joy. "Talk" is more your gyrating retro disco house, whilst "Heavyweights" explores a more arpeggiated hi-NRG space disco route. Fingerman also steps in to add some extra poppers to the cauldron - creating a boogie stormer with his "Fierce mix" in the process.

Review: There really seems to be no stopping the LW Recordings collective as they march forward with the third edition of their Leftfield Bass Selections series, this time bringing together 25 powerhouse anthems, perfect for turning any dance to a zoo. Styles range from the futuristic breakbeat themes of 'Justice' from Paket, to the more relaxed 4x4 UKG rhythms of 'No One Gives A' from Flawless Order & G 'Baffled' Smoove. For us the immediate standouts from this one have to include Devil Dragon Tatoo's tech funky hybrid in 'Shaman', Brick Top's abstract riddim smasher in 'Prometheus' and of course Deep Impact's potent rework of 'Hot Ting', originally put together by Lady Waks & Mutantbreakz alongside MC Steppa Style.

Review: DSCi4 present the sixth release in their Spy Technologies sampler series, featuring the talents of Mindscape and Mr Foul. Mindscape's "Flashback" on the A-Side delivers some meaty old-skool action, with some satisfying low end going hand in hand with light melodic touches and cowbell percussion, while Mr Foul's "Land Of Look Behind" is a more sinister number, filled with terrifying ambience and a deep bass growl. Highly recommended.

Review: Almost wish Tonbe would make a bad record, just so I didn't feel like such a gushing fanboi, but it hasn't happened yet! The Serbian don's latest 15-track outing finds him, as the title suggests, firmly in house mode, with all 15 cuts aimed fair and square at the dancefloor, but still manages to encompass enough variety to ensure things never get dull. 'Bright Days', for instance, is a very musical affair that evidences jazz-funk influences and sports a preacherman vocal, while 'Drive Me Around' is percussion-driven and comes topped with a late 80s-style rap. But it's the deep 'n' dreamy, piano-sprinkled grooves and sultry diva vox of 'You Gotta Dance' that lead the charge for this reviewer.

Review: Glasgow Underground's contribution to the 2020 Miami sampler mountain may well induce feelings of deja vu: not only does it include multiple tracks from label boss Kevin McKay recent much-vaunted 'No Samples...' covers album, but much of the rest is in a similar vein, with McKay and a selection of musical buddies reworking a load more house classics to bring them in line with 21st Century production values. To our ears, though, it's the fresh cuts here that are the more interesting, and happily there are plenty of those on offer, too, coming from the likes of Vanilla Ace, Mirko & Maex, Reblok, Adapter, Sam Dexter and Elliot Fitch.

Review: About Disco's latest compilation focuses on the work of label boss Rafael Cancian, a Brazilian producer who recently made a rare appearance on Razor 'N' Tape. Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Toolroom's "Poolside Ibiza" compilation strand, namely groovy nu-disco, house and laidback Balearic beats inspired by afternoons spent lounging by the water in stonking White Isle heat. Naturally, there are plenty of gems to be found amongst the 40 unmixed tunes selected by chosen DJs Moullinex and Xinobi, from their own collaborative post-punk/dub number "X Marks The Spot", to the slick '80s synth-pop dreaminess of Tensnake's fine remix of Xinobi's "Far Away Place" and the drowsy, Morricone-influenced soundscape weirdness of Simple Symmetry's remix of Moscoman's "I Ran". Review: Back after a long hiatus, this French duo return to the fold with a stomping EP packed full of party breaks and wobbly electro bass. "Get That Bass" has some Sinden-esque fidget funk while "Keep It Better" works some impressive garage-styled vocals chops, as well as huge filter builds. A new mix of their hit "Party All Night" also shows up on the EP - more stretched out than the original with a great long intro perfect for DJs - as well a mix of "Boom Boom Boom" done by the boys themselves and packed full of sampled brass and full-on bass. Good to see the lads back and sounding better than ever.
