Review: What a year it's been for Perc Trax. The label's long-term championing of harder-edged techno has paid off, with the roster starting to get wider recognition. Manni Dee's contribution to this year in review compilation is the pounding techno of "Gulabi Gang", which comes close to 140bpm and features wild screeches and howls. Scalameriya, another artist championed by the label, drops three tracks that characterise this tough techno sound; "Crucible" is a straight up sheet metal banger, while on "Slobodna" he opts for a noisy industrial approach and "Hellzone Megapunk" is an ear bleed-inducing pounder. I Hate Models is the artist most likely to make the big break though, as the pile-driving acid of "Spreading Plague" and the break beat-led "Martial Order" demonstrate.

Review: Another offering in the uniformly excellent Soul Jazz Records compilation series, this collection of 22 all-killer punk gems chronicles an era in which disaffected youth and energetic misfits alike railed against the sun-drenched blandness of the Californian city they inhabited. Running the gamut from the proto-punk mayhem of Iggy & The Stooges to the early hardcore of Circle Jerks and from the jokey outsider art of Black Randy & The Metrosquad to the comparatively sophisticated X, all bases are covered here in a thrilling document of middle-finger intensity and rulebook-ripping iconoclasm.

Review: After years of searching, it sounds like Ellen Allien's label has finally found an electronic music diva. Silence is based on understated but plaintive piano playing, brassy licks and some ambient interludes - most notably the wintry charms of "Track 7" - but the most striking aspect of this debut album is Dominique Dillon de Byington's vocals. Like a more endearing Bjork on the wide-eyed "Your Flesh Against Mine" or Kate Bush in free flowing mode backed up with infectious ivory tinkling on "You Are My Winter", there is still enough originality here- check the toy town melodies and daft lyrics about robots on "Hey Beau" - to ensure Dillon has a very bright future.
