This third volume naturally contains a few inspired revisions of well-known cuts - a riotous take on The Fatback Band's "Do The Bus Stop", an astonishing, dubbed-out version of the Temptations' "Law of the Land" and a soaring, life-affirming rearrangement of Patrice Rushen's "Never Give You Up" included - but also some suitably smart tweaks of lesser-known gems. Review: When Eskimo Recordings approached Bill Brewster with the idea of putting together a compilation exploring his epic record collection, the acclaimed journalist and DJ decided to take a widescreen approach. While the CD and vinyl versions are split into multiple, themed editions ("Post-Punk", "Balearic" and "House"), this vast, 41-track digital edition gathers everything together in one place. Predictably, it's a hugely impressive and eye-opening set, with Brewster serving up largely obscure or long-forgotten cuts that range in scope from trippy, dubbed-out post-punk disco, jaunty jazz-funk, synth-heavy boogie and heavily percussive Afro-disco grooves, to saucer-eyed European synth-pop, the dub techno of Maurizio, Swag's early UK tech-house and the East Midlands deep house bump of Charles Webster's "A Love From San Francisco" project. In other words, it's a cracker from start to finish.

Tracks come a mixture of relatively new names (Martyn Nytram, Saffire Dubz, Confusious) and more established players (LJ High, Scartip and of course Hybrid himself), while stylistically the album touches on various different D&B sub-genres, but with the emphasis always firmly on cuts that are built to tear up the rave.

This latest collection is stuffed to the gills with quality spanning all those genres and more.
Funk fans will immediately revel in the cover of The Blackbyrds classic "Rock Creek Park" by Beggar & Co which stays faithful to the glorious original whilst also adding some club-friendly kicks and percussion. On a more organic live funk tip, Lack of Afro's "I Can?t Dance With You" delivers plenty of Hammond-driven thrills and some huge drums to boot. The Jezebel Sextet's "Mr Hot Pants" is another nu-funk bomb, with brass spilling out all over the track yet all held together with some precision bass and drums.

Review: A new mix from perennial party faves Soul Clap is always a cause for celebration, but there's something extra-special about this particular exercise in dancefloor nostalgia. Nice 'N' Ripe Allstars sees them revisit the bulging back catalogue of Grant Nelson's Nice 'N' Ripe label, an imprint that has tracked the rise, fall and subsequent rebirth of UK garage since its' birth in 1993. Soul Clap's mix - an action-packed 30-track affair featuring some of their own edits and remixes of classic cuts - does a great job in showcasing the best the label has to offer, flitting between early US garage style jams, loose soulful house, sturdy two-step, bass-heavy speed garage and the kind of long-lost jams which should be bitten by today's retro-minded house producers. In doing so, it offers an impeccable history lesson.

Review: Irish Moss recordings: promoting positive vibes in reggae and bass music culture. They don't fail to deliver on their mission statement here, so check this out. Ireland's DJ Obese and Jay Sharp team up again for a full length that is serious fire! "Mr Willams Dirty Dubsterz Meets Special Request" gives us a well rolled lowdown that's hard to argue with. Feel the bass on "Back To Boom City" where Blackout JA tells the truth; blunted style. There's some female MCs on here too such as on "Blue Fishes" (with Soom T's smooth delivery) and there's drum and bass on "I Love" and we'll give you just one guess what they're referring to? We know what you're thinking and don't worry: there's some killer bashment vibes on tracks like "Domino". Jah!

Review: V Recordings: A genus source for drum and bass, the launch pad of so many great careers it's not worth counting and still a consistent source of forward-thinking beats. If any label can justify five volumes of back-cat badness, it's Bryan Gee's. Going right back to 1993 (Roni Size's "Timestretch"), we whistle, rattle and roll past some of the label's (and scene in general's) titans. Dillinja is repped hard with an array of discography highlights such as the shattered amen attack plan ("Bad Man"), Krust is paid in full with cuts such as the minimal muscle roller "Set Speed", jungle godfather Sappo reminds us of real old school with "Into The Light" while Future Cut's later-era "Prophecy" is rewound to great effect. And that's just five of the album's 21 chapters. A must read document for junglists old and young.

Review: Mala's Deep Medi Musik maintain their high standards in 2011 with the welcome return of VIVEK on a plump four track selection that matches his earlier release Pulse. What Eyes Down lacks in titular imagination, it more than makes up for in terms of refined dubstep preshah! Opening with "The Big Bang" Vivek further displays a penchant for simmering cinematic tension, as growling subs prowl the nether regions beneath a sparse half step riddim. In contrast "Spread Love" demonstrates Sharda's prowess with crafting intricately programmed beats that flex with a UKG swing but retain a stepper template. What really impresses is how the heavily dosed up purple vibe gradually engulfs the track. Elsewhere "Sirens" envelopes the straight up, crisp 808centric drums in an array of delayed droning effects, before slipping in a lazily skanking melody, whilst the title track is Sharda showing off his sub bass capabilites.

Review: The subtitle of this album tries to downplay the talent of this rising re-edit producer, but the truth is that these cuts are anything but ill-advised. Chopshop label boss DJ Butcher wouldn't put out a record if it wasn't any good and besides, he's not known for his bad advice. There are 12 disco gems here to explore, highlights include the sparse, teched-out soul-grooves of Alain Toussant's rare gem "Night People, the deep and woozy Balearic funk of "Go Donny Go" and a delicious electro-funk-pop version of "Inside Out", as made famous by Odyssey.

Review: DJ Hybrid looks back over another successful and hugely prolific year with this massive 31 track compendium of Audio Addict slammers, bangers and a few cheeky exclusives. A great opportunity to get up to speed on the 170BPM clarity DJ Hybrid operates the label at, every single track guarantees heat. Notable shouts go out to Kumurachi's various inclusions (especially Octo-Pi's brand new remix of "Phatty"), RMS & Dcision's low-riding bumper "One Ting", Epicentre's slinky soul-touched roller "infamous", Agro's skank-slapped "Bust Dis Ting" and Swerve's maximum-boosting twist of Hybrid's "What Else". But that really is the tip of the double-A iceberg. It's been an exceptional year for the label, and this is proof.
