Review: Whenever the Infernal Sounds banner is unfurled in the store, we know it's time to sit back and embrace the inevitable sonic onslaught they have in store, with this latest four track collection from Teffa being just the ticket. We open up with the vibrant sub processing and dubwise arrangement of 'Time For A Change', taking calming vocal samples and spacious layouts to unleash a monstrous introduction. Next, more percussive-lead energy as 'Shapeshifter' then arrives with a skippy feeling laced throughout its tidy drum designs and subtle subs, with the spacey pad backdrops and delayed vocals of 'Nobody Cares' then giving us a glittering follow up. Finally, the LFO squelches of 'Velvet Rooms' give us a tasty finale to chow down on, rounding off another very successful outing from the Infernal Sounds team.

Review: Midnight Riot do their bit to address the much-discussed gender imbalance in dance music with a 25-track collection featuring an almost entirely female line-up (though a few possessors of Y-chromosomes do sneak in as collaborators). With big names like Kathy Brown, DJ Paulette, Rowetta, Caron Wheeler, Sulene Fleming and Natasha Kitty Katt nestling up alongside a host of more up-and-coming artists, the quality standard is high throughout, with the musical emphasis largely on good-time, Saturday night house and disco vibes, though there a few more gently paced moments - notably in the form of covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo' - while Paulette & Massey serve up a pleasing dose of acid on 'Sheroes'.

Review: In the sales notes accompanying this latest slice of EP gold from Athens of the North, boss man Euan Fryer admits that he spent a good "four or five years" trying to locate an original copy of "Time For Change" before finally tracking down original singer Benita. She was more than happy for him to reissue the record, which is one of the most inspired and well-made disco-soul records you're ever likely to hear (how it remained a lost classic, we'll never know). Benita's lyrics and vocals are superb, the horns are punchy, and "Hot Mix" contains one of the best slap-bass solos you'll ever hear. In a word: essential.
