Review: Bologna based legend Luca Trevisi aka LTJ Xperience has been spinning around Italy since the '80s so we were convinced he knew his stuff already, but this album is truly testament to his years and knowledge. He re-edits a bunch of classic soul jams spanning, funk soul, disco and rare groove on a collection which is pure fire and a worthy addition to any DJs arsenal. The smooth groove of "Slow Fire" is the kind of thing Psychemagik could have got to first, while "You Will Know" and "Black Machine" sample some of the very best in the form of Gypsy Kings and Prince, respectively. There's a lot to get through, but it's all killer, no filler!

Review: Midnight Riot do their bit to address the much-discussed gender imbalance in dance music with a 25-track collection featuring an almost entirely female line-up (though a few possessors of Y-chromosomes do sneak in as collaborators). With big names like Kathy Brown, DJ Paulette, Rowetta, Caron Wheeler, Sulene Fleming and Natasha Kitty Katt nestling up alongside a host of more up-and-coming artists, the quality standard is high throughout, with the musical emphasis largely on good-time, Saturday night house and disco vibes, though there a few more gently paced moments - notably in the form of covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo' - while Paulette & Massey serve up a pleasing dose of acid on 'Sheroes'.

Review: If we're counting correctly, this is the eighth album in the 'Too Slow To Disco' series overall, and the second 'Ladies Of...' volume, so you should have some idea what to expect by now! But for anyone who hasn't been introduced, slo-mo nuggets that are roughly contemporaneous with the disco era are the series' stock-in-trade, and they've unearthed some truly splendid nuggets here. See for instance 'Love The Way You Love Me', a surprisingly sensual groove from light entertainment stalwart Marti Caine that's absolutely dripping in funk - you'd swear that bassline was Imagination, for starters. There are one or two slightly over-schmaltzy moments but generally speaking these are late-night smoochers n' swayers of the highest order... soft focus, white wine and roses optional.

Looking back over key releases such as Guzi's album Goldstone Life, Grimesy's 'Voices' and Conrad Subs' 'Don't Blame The DJ', there's a powerful range of party starters, bubblers, skankers and slappers. Review: Leiden's Lenzman reps his Dutch section with a brand new label dedicated to the more soulful fringes of D&B and its rich hip-hop roots. Starting as he means to go on, the debut release weighs in at a hefty 10 tracks ranging from hurricane soul such as the beautiful vocal-flecked "Don't Let Go" and "Down For Whatever", restrained jazzy rolls ("Grateful") and potential tune of the year business with his own remix of Children Of Zeus's "Still Standing". Review: Most labels get all Scrooge-like with their samplers - four tracks here, six tracks there, not the ever-reliable Ammo. No siree! What we have here is a 25-track bombardment of heavy artillery. Despite the imagery though, the label's sound is always friendly. There's so many feel good tunes on here, you'll be still be rinsing this by Christmas. Highlights include the peak time bleepy hysteria of "Got To Get Disco (Rescue remix)" by Charles Feelgood & Filipe Avelar, the big, bouncy retro beats of "On Point" by CRS & Squirt D and the disco-tech monster "Disco Nights" by Dr Taylor.

Review: The label's suffered a little from Man Utd Syndrome over the years but for me, you just can't fault a Toolroom comp: they always offer great VFM, and as quick bi-annual (or whatever) snapshots of 'where house is at right now', they're unbeatable. The headline for this installment is that, where the Toolroom story over the past few years has mostly been about label boss Mark Knight getting back in touch with his soulful roots, this set leans a little more to the tuff n' techy side. But with 50 full-length tracks to choose from, plus two hour-long DJ mixes - and with that M1 drop on Azete's 'Born Bad' worth the price of admission on its own! - you really can't go wrong here.

Review: Dutch boogie masters Kraak & Smaak mark two whole decades in the game this year, and to celebrate the occasion, Jalapeno bring us this best-of selection culled from releases both on Jalapeno and on their own Boogie Angst imprint. Kraak & Smaak have always neatly walked the line between straight-up funk, disco and boogie on the one hand, and more pop-oriented productions on the other, and so it is here: the first half of the album is packed with 'new old' funk and soul gems like 'Danse Macabre' and 'I Don't Know', while the second half concentrates largely on the more commercial side of their oeuvre, not to mention their collaborations with a wide array of guest vocalists. Fans will have most of what's here already, of course, but it's a fitting tribute to an impressive career to date - long may it continue.

Review: Aussie disco don Dr Packer has been Glitterbox Recordings' go-to remixer for some time now. Three years ago, the label opened up its archives and allowed him free reign to rework whatever he wanted, releasing the results as Dr Packer's Different Strokes. This belated sequel follows a similar blueprint, collecting together a wealth of remixes as well as a couple of non-stop DJ mixes of the same material. Much of the music is authentically disco-centric - think organic instrumentation, swirling strings and rushing vocals - with just enough grunt to please those dancefloors the require 21st century low-end weight. Highlights include a glassy-eyed take on Aeroplane's 'Love on Hold', a sing-along version of Lemelle's boogie gem 'You Got Something Special' and a handful of fine rubs of the Shapeshifters.

Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. It's in the latter category that you'll find some of the most impressive fare - see Phil Jaimes deliciously Balearic "Nowhere To Hide" and Cosmocomics' kaleidoscopic synth-funk jam "Mary Jane" - though the standard remains pleasingly high throughout.

Review: It may have taken eight years, but Joey Negro has finally got round to putting together a follow-up to his superb Backstreet Brit Funk compilation. Like its predecessor, this sequel shines a light on Britain's under-appreciated musical response to the U.S soul, jazz-funk, disco and electro scenes of the late 70s and early 80s. On the whole, the showcased tracks are altogether deeper selections than those found on volume one, meaning obscure highlights come thick and fast. These include - but definitely aren't limited to - the low-slung disco-funk of Rick Clarke's "Potion", the glassy-eyed breeziness of Paradise's "Stop and Think", the footworker-friendly jazz-funk riot of Touchdown's "Ease Your Mind" and the samba-soaked carnival flavours of "Brazeila" by Brazeila. Oh, and a killer dub of Janet Kay's overlooked Brit-boogie classic "Eternally Grateful" that has never before been released.

Review: It's been a decade since producer Smoov and singer Turrell put together their live band. To celebrate the fact, the popular combo has put together this fine career retrospective. It's full to bursting with dancefloor hits plucked from their sizable catalogue, as well as fan favourites that inspire rapturous responses when performed live. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the high-octane thrills of "I'm A Man" and funk-rock fizz of "You Could've Been a Lady", to the Hammond-heavy stomp of "I Can't Give You Up" and the Motown style Northern Soul rush of "Lay It On Me". It's also nice to get another chance to wallow in the band's punchy, breakbeat-powered funk cover of Yazoo classic "Don't Go".

There are a whopping 23 tracks on here, some of the best include Tomas Malo's sultry grinder, "After The Rain", Yam Who?'s bouncy sunkissed disco joint "Find Out" and the digi-freestyle breaks of TV's "Love Situation".

Review: Vocally-led by child sensation, Foster Sylvers, The Sylvers family grew into their own throughout the 70s, and 1973's The Sylvers II really instilled their sound as the gold standard fo funk music. We're talking about a family of kids who were all incredible musicians, truly offering the world a heartfelt performance, whichever aesthetic they were going for. Mr Bongo has delivered the goods once again with this reissue, and we are totally stoked about the fact that we are receiving the sort of funk and soul which still has not been experienced by everyone. It is about the mystique, it is about the charm, and it's most certainly high time for some soothing soul direct from the source - oh, and check that bassline on the magnetic "Handle It". Review: It's been well established over the last couple of years that the Night Bass movement has rapidly risen into one of the most impressive imprints in global dance music, with 2021 being another very successful year. Review: Thirteen may be unlucky for some, but there is no such bad fortune on the latest edition of the Full Body Workout mix. This time, the German label has entrusted the controls to remixer Julian Ganzer - who counts Booka Shade's "Darko" among his reworks - and Javier Logares, who has put out releases for Get Physical and Bar 25. Between them, they steer the mix through reflective, evocative sounds (Doomwork's "DNA"), into tripped out, stripped back house and techno from Mikael Stavosstrand & Cesare vs Disorder and Fabio Giannelli and into the kind of dramatic house that the label is known for, articulated here by the orchestral flourishes of K.E.E.N.E. & Robosonic's "Waters".

Review: It's fair to say that this release has been a labour of love. Five years in the making, label owner Emmanuel has chosen a collection of tracks from his dream team of techno producers. This means that ASC's breathy ambience "Stasis" sits beside deep, at times acid -soaked pulsing rhythms from Boston 168, Unbalance and Forward Strategy Group as well as peak-time rollers from emerging artists like Cleric and industrial bangers courtesy of scene veterans like Dustin Zahn. While the inclusion of producers such as Subjected and the fast rising I Hate Models is sure to put increased focus on this compilation, its real, lasting value are the more cerebral contributions such as Emmanuel's own "Bridge of Quietness".

Review: As the title suggests, Terrence's Parker's first album since 2014 was inspired by the two constants in the experienced producer's life: his Christian faith, and the ongoing struggles of Detroit. Musically, it's an unashamedly retro-futurist affair, with Parker largely delivering a range of feel good tunes that draw heavily on techno, gospel, New Jersey garage and Chicago house. Highlights are plentiful, from the warm sci-fi ambience of "The Sabbath" and rich, late '80s soulfulness of "Transition", to the bubbly techno shuffle of "Let's Go" and the rush-inducing piano house stomp that is "Don't Waste Another Minute". "Latter Rain", which is served up in two distinctive versions - the beat-less, string-drenched soul of the "Hearing The Rain Mix" and the classic US garage skip of the "After The Storm Mix" - is also superb.

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his brilliant "Sunny Bigler" single, Leon Sweet has been installed as the man behind the decks for the second volume of Paper Disco's Trash The Wax series. Sweet's two-hour DJ mix is excellent, of course, but it's the unmixed tracks - a combination of unheard bits and recent Paper gems - that make this compilation essential. Expect a range of re-edits and original tracks that variously touch on nu-disco, Italo, boogie and, of course, house. Highlights are plentiful, and include a trippy slow acid version of The Balearic Beat Boy's "Waiting For Me", a typically rubbery mid-80s soul re-cit from 80s Child, and a killer, filter-heavy rework of Melba Moore by Neil Diablo.
