Review: The title's very apt here, as Record Kicks serve up a collection of (more or less) contemporary jazz cuts to inspire your inner auteur. Third Coast Kings, for instance, bring us 'Errol Flynns', which conjures Blaxploitation-esque images of a late-night cab ride through 70s Harlem, while Moonbrow & Paolo Apollo Negri's 'Project Gemini' could easily soundtrack a 60s spy caper in which our hero, in his sharp Italian suit and trench coat, wanders into a wigged-out Chelsea happening complete lava lamps, oil projectors and heavily mascara'd girls in geometric-patterned Mary Quant mini-dresses. You get the idea: think 'Library Music (The Extended Remix)', but in the best possible way.

Review: Next up from the man with the plan, also known as Murder He Wrote, he returns to his beloved Rhythm Atheltic for a sumptuous collection of originals with the first volume of 'Icymi'. Across seven outstanding originals, we are able to enjoy the full range of MHW's full production arsenal, kicking off with the beautiful drum designs and shifting soundscapes of 'All I Ever Needed' and chased up by the fabulous vocal additions on 'Air' from Maddie Ellerby. From here, 'Too Late' sees more top notch vocal work from Chrystal, who this time plays the lead voice in another pad-heavy excursion few future-inspired UK-funky sounds, before the rattling snares of 'Loss' and squelching bass textures of 'Watch The Tempo II' add a bit more instrumental edge. Finally, we finish on some syncopated successes as 'Cuica' allows us to explore the true rhythmic skills of Murder He Wrote's production range, followed by a top quality finale in 'Denied', a carnival inspired combo of lively drum expressions and Roxy Sections' awesome vocal lines. Incredible work as always from Murder He Wrote!

Review: Originally a limited, cassette-only release via fellow Canadian Eddie C's Red Motorbike, the Parisian label Circus Company presents The Mole's latest album for the first time digitally. The River Widens is a collection of 21 works that tick all the boxes, covering a wide range of moods and grooves, many of them quite short in length with the exception of some extended tracks streamlined for the dancefloor. Ones such as the hypnotic beatless disco of "New Family", the late night mood music of "Repepepater" (feat Joli B) in particular gets deep, through to the quirky microgroove of "Ufos Over Egypt" (feat Cristobal) or the breathtaking and glassy-eyed ambient of closer "Being A Total Warm Up" are just some of many choice selections.
