Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. This third volume naturally contains a few inspired revisions of well-known cuts - a riotous take on The Fatback Band's "Do The Bus Stop", an astonishing, dubbed-out version of the Temptations' "Law of the Land" and a soaring, life-affirming rearrangement of Patrice Rushen's "Never Give You Up" included - but also some suitably smart tweaks of lesser-known gems. Review: This VA is jam-packed with some of the scene's best liquid maestros, and it's of the movement for Liquid Drum & Bass 4 Autism, a group which seeks to raise awareness and money for those who have autism. Low:r, Furney, MsDos and more have gotten themselves involved, and the result is a lovely, serene walk through some of 174's most nonchalant moments. 'Eyes Closed' by Low:r is especially gorgeous, with his trademark organic sound fluttering in the wind of his creativity like usual. Changer is characteristically deep with 'Only To Be', and it's just the iceberg of what is a brilliant album for a brilliant cause.

As well as being in charge of the Jazz Cafe, Adrian Gibson also runs his Freestyle label in order to break new talent in the world of jazz, funk, soul and Latin music. This latest collection is stuffed to the gills with quality spanning all those genres and more.
Funk fans will immediately revel in the cover of The Blackbyrds classic "Rock Creek Park" by Beggar & Co which stays faithful to the glorious original whilst also adding some club-friendly kicks and percussion. On a more organic live funk tip, Lack of Afro's "I Can?t Dance With You" delivers plenty of Hammond-driven thrills and some huge drums to boot. The Jezebel Sextet's "Mr Hot Pants" is another nu-funk bomb, with brass spilling out all over the track yet all held together with some precision bass and drums.
Bennson's remix of "No I Can Do" however is more produced and sounds like prime 80's boogie, in a similar vein to Junior or Jocelyn Brown. The Mo? Horizons mix of "Life Is A Trip" also shows off their studio skills, looping parts of Gypsy Brown?s original and adding some bouncy broken beats into the fun. Mop Mop also does wonders with Valique's "Where Is The Love", building an intriguing mood with some vibes and thumb-pianos before dropping the beats and vocals for maximum impact.

Review: More midtempo yet still eminently danceable grooves here from DJ Supermarket's Too Slow To Disco camp, this time coming courtesy of Italian-Australian producer Dave Mathmos. He turns his hand to re-editing two dancefloor classics from the 70s, with the lazy, laidback and Balearic 'Your Love (Contemporary Soul Mix)' biting the vocal from Ben E King's 1975 disco hit 'Supernatural Thing', while Rose Royce's 'Love Don't Live Here Any More' forms the basis of 'You Abandoned Me (Dave Mathmos Interpretation)', with a single line of the vocal looped up over house-y pianos and a slo-mo electro bassline.

To celebrate this landmark occasion, the man himself has selected 25 of his favourite cuts from the label's rapidly expanding back catalogue. As a showcase for everything that's good about the imprint, it does a bang up job, gleefully jogging between exotic mid-tempo disco and disco-funk (Frank Virgilio, Dr Packer, The funk District), slo-mo disco-acid (Fingerman's tremendous rework of B-Jam's "Sundog"), kaleidoscopic, reworked '80s boogie business (Casual Connection, Melon Bomb, the hard-tweaked filters and heady loop business of Chewy Rubs), tried-and-tested party-starters (Smashed Atoms, Get Down Edits remixing Stephen Richards) and giddy peak-time workouts (Shit Hot Soundsystem, Dave Gerrard, Thomas Maslo, Kiu D). Review: Go-go has always been one of American dance music's most overlooked genres. Given its roots lie in Washington DC, rather than music metropolises such as New York, Detroit or Chicago, that's perhaps unsurprising. This collection from Joey Negro offers a good starting point for those unfamiliar with the style, showcasing the work of scene stalwarts like Chuck Brown and a string of lesser-known names. It also impressively tracks the development of the sound, from a regional variant of funk to a an electro and hip-hop inspired crossover style in the early 1980s. Even if you've got a passing interest in go-go, it's worth a gander; as usual, Lee has unearthed some brilliant unheralded gems.

Review: Editorial are back with more throwback disco sounds for our decadent dancefloor (guilty) pleasure! Starting out with the sublime deep soul of Slow Steps "We Won't Have To Cry No More (re-work)" they then launch into Los Angeles' Dino (yes, not Gino!) Soccio's "West Athena Funk" which stays on the soul train for a while until the epic boogie drama of Rayko's "Magic Number" ups the tempo, good and proper. Danny Deluxe serves up some summery Balearic vibes on "The Best Years" but they leave the best for last with Sunner Souls' "Show Me Your Love", a funky disco house groove for late night fashion crowds, which is ironically by a Siberian producer! We can dig it!

Review: For the latest volume in their popular Disco Funkin' compilation strand, Bomb Strikes has handed over curation duties to rising star and Midnight Riot regular Natasha Kitty Katt. The Edinburgh DJ/producer's selections are undeniably addictive and on-point, moving between heavyweight re-edits (see her collaboration with Twisted Soul Collective, 'Twisted Katt', solo disco-funk tweak 'Edgarr!' and Oliver Boogie's slamming 'Dance Band'), superior nu-disco originals (Phoenix's piano-heavy 'Nature Dance', Fouk's sample-heavy 'Cat Lady' and the slick boogie revivalism of Lovebirds' 'Give Me a Sign') and loopy disco-house treats (the contributions from Shaka Loves You, Birdee, Hotmood and Mark Lower).
