Review: While most of us have never heard of Winston, fellow dusty-fingered record collectors hold him in high esteem. On his contribution to Z Records' essential "Under The Influence" series it's easy to see why. His selections are uniformly superb and, bar a handful of cuts, almost unknown to anyone outside the serious collecting community. For proof, check the celebratory, slap-bass propelled disco-funk of Doug Payne and Polygon's "Holiday", the heady, high-octane disco thrills of Expose's "I Just Wanna Dance With You", the low-slung early funk-rap headiness of Jungle Band's "Jungleland (Part 2)" and the wickedly percussive salsa-disco heaviness of Suave's "Salsa Gon Gitcha". In other words, it's a killer collection of top-notch cuts that you'll never have heard before. What's not to like?

Review: Five very solid disco/disco-house cuts here from Sunner Soul. The title track is a sumptuous affair with strings, a phat-ass bassline, "I need you" female vocal snips and some fine space disco stabs, 'Dance Symphony' is a summery jam with a Loleatta vocal bite and mucho filter action, 'Let's Stay Together' finds us in 80s boogie territory (with more of those killer stabs to boot), 'Must Be Amour' harks back to the filter disco sound of the late 90s/early 00s and closer 'Oneness Of Soul' is a mellower cut with a dubby bassline and gently tinkling jazz ivories. Classy stuff all round.

Review: Toolroom's annual White Island compilation bounces back this year with a wide range of house styles. There's the lush melodies and breathy vocals of label owner Mark Knight's "Make You Happy". Meanwhile, vocal tracks are, as always, a prominent feature. Pete Griffiths delivers a soulful track in the shape of the piano-led, celebratory "Get Together", while Melanie Ribbe's "Big" is a more subtle affair, with haunting vocals riding a rolling, techy groove. In contrast, ESSEL delivers a throbbing, primal workout in the form of "Sweat". Havoc & Lawn's "Reflection" offers another take on the perennial sound - this time, the focus is on a brittle, stepping rhythm.
