Nice 'N' Ripe All Stars (unmixed tracks)
Soul Clap / Various
Resonator - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (original version) - (5:17) 136 BPM
Review: A new mix from perennial party faves Soul Clap is always a cause for celebration, but there's something extra-special about this particular exercise in dancefloor nostalgia. Nice 'N' Ripe Allstars sees them revisit the bulging back catalogue of Grant Nelson's Nice 'N' Ripe label, an imprint that has tracked the rise, fall and subsequent rebirth of UK garage since its' birth in 1993. Soul Clap's mix - an action-packed 30-track affair featuring some of their own edits and remixes of classic cuts - does a great job in showcasing the best the label has to offer, flitting between early US garage style jams, loose soulful house, sturdy two-step, bass-heavy speed garage and the kind of long-lost jams which should be bitten by today's retro-minded house producers. In doing so, it offers an impeccable history lesson.

Review: Cripes! Top Billin' doesn't seem to even stop for Christmas! This latest is a compilation of their best releases from 2012, and considering their pretty hefty back catalogue, they had their work cut out for them. Boasting a whopping 25 tracks, the album's highlights include the Tropical campery of "Phil So Real", the glorious "Always Got My Back", the Future bass exoticism of "I Told Ya", the sparse and dreamy drum machine and soft pad heaven of "Find Your Love", the sci-fi ghetto beats of "Work It", the badass old skool house of "House Girl" and "Motion Elements (Snuff Crew remix)" and the blissed out Italo-disco ish "Shake Sitten (Kush Arora remix)".

Review: Has bassline ever been more influential than it is currently across the UK? I think most people would struggle to argue otherwise. To celebrate this, bassline heavyweights DJQ, Jamie Duggan, Skepsis and Darkzy join forces for an allstar compilation album, including a selection of full tracks and exclusive mixes. The full project includes exclusive drops from the likes of Champion, Shanti, DJQ, Flava D, TQD, Preditah, Bushbaby, Darkzy, Bru-C and many more. You are going to struggle to find a more comprehensive bassline selection this year!

Equiknoxx - "Flagged Up" (Mark Ernestus remix) - (9:36) 137 BPM
Stanislav Tolkachev - "Optical Illusions" - (7:43) 137 BPM
Review: This an altogether epic offering from Deetron; a vast collection of un-mixed tracks from his brilliant DJ Kicks mix (naturally included as a bonus cut) that is little less than a lesson in the evolution of techno over the last three decades. Amongst the 38 tracks you'll find fine representatives of a myriad of sub-genres (intelligent techno, dub techno, IDM, ambient techno, gospel techno, and so on), as well as past, present and future classics (Damier and Trent's "Morning Factory", Spacetime Continuum's "Swing Factory", Mark Ernestus's recent Equinoxx remix, the Motor City bliss of Rhythim is Rhythim AKA Derrick May's "Ka-o-tic Harmony", a brilliant old Black Dog Productions workout). In other words, it's a breathlessly brilliant collection of both well-known and obscure gems. It comes heartily recommended.

Various
Jimmy Spencer - "Summertime" (original mix) - (2:17) 137 BPM
Played by: YAM WHO?
Review: It's always a joy when a new Under The Influence compilation arrives from Z Records HQ. Even better when it's curated by none other than Sean P, the veteran disco/boogie producer pal of Joey Negro. Sean's diggin' skills are so legendary he even had his own section in the Music & Video Exchange and here he puts these skills to use, rustling up 27 dance obscurities. Highlights include the lo-fi UK funk jam "Bye Bye Baby" by Joanne Ellis, the dubbed-out punky bass mantra "Trinidad Rock" by King David and the percussion frenzy of Jimmy Spencer's mad cover of "Summertime".

Tanda Tula Choir
Yehova Xikwembu Xanga (God Is My King) Eric - (1:38) 138 BPM
Review: Recently, Superpitcher was invited to go on a safari in South Africa. He bought a custom made hat at his favorite milliner in Cologne and set off with big eyes and a pair of binoculars. It was wild and wonderful journey where he saw many exotic creatures - apparently a leopard in a tree told him the secret of the universe. But most of all, he was enchanted by the hypnotic and moving sound of the voices of Africa: the voices of the wonderful Tanda Tula staff choir. There, the choir members work during the day at the camp and at night entertain the guests with their captivating voices and energetic dancing. So impressed was he with their songs and beautiful Shangaan language that he decided to record a CD for them to sell in the shop at their camp and now this precious recording is also available through Hippie Dance/Bush Recordings in whatever wherever camp you are.

Review: We have been singing the praises of the 2TUF4U imprint for a fair few weeks now, but this latest release takes that to an entirely new level as they unveil a phenomenal 30 track selection featuring heavyweights such as Mad Tuff Project, Leanne Louise, Don Oliver, Kele Le Roc, Gary Esson, DIY and a tonne more. It's a pretty monumental project, showcasing the best of the combination between old and new UK garage in it's richest formats. Despite the tracklisting being super stacked, our highlights would have to include the dreamy landscapes of Undertone's Instant Mood Vocal mix of 'Let It Be' from Xavier, alongside Solution's Doctor dub mix of 'You', put together originally by the exceptional combo of Fully Loaded Project, Karl Brown & Todd Edwards. What a legendary compilation this really is.

Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX
Marle Moor - "Pretty Day" - (2:59) 137 BPM
Sad Lovers & Giants - "Things We Never Did" - (4:07) 136 BPM
Review: Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX marks the second electrifying compilation from Eskimo Recordings, masterfully curated by Berlin-based musician and DJ Luca Venezia, aka Curses. Spanning some 50 tracks - this extensive collection weaves a captivating narrative connecting the dots between industrial pioneers like Throbbing Gristle, EBM legends Nitzer Ebb, and the post-punk experimentation of Malcolm McLaren or Big Audio Dynamite, all the while introducing us to contemporary talents such as Boy Harsher, Nuovo Testamento, and Years of Denial. With direct inspirations coming from personal voyages through Luca Venezia's record collection during lockdown - DEUX transports us through a hazy, pulsating clubland from yesteryear where a sonic journey pulls together other talent like The KVB, Jennifer Touch, Kris Baha and a selections of Curses own remixes and revamps.

Review: There is no doubting the majesty of Garage Shared as an overarching titan of the new school UKG world, with their label operations being among the best in the game right now, a theme amplified and proven further by the pure magnificence of this here compilation. Being the fourth in their self-titled series, they have once again pulled together a seriously vibrant collection of artists from their ranks, unleashing a collection of 30 outstanding garage originals. 20 Years Of Phonica
Various
Daniel Avery - "Bell" - (6:08) 135 BPM
Review: In 2003, amid a shifting landscape of closing record stores and evolving electronic music genres, Phonica Records emerged as a haven for dance and electronic music enthusiasts. Founded by Simon Rigg, Tom Relleen, and Heidi Van Den Amstel with backing from The Vinyl Factory - Phonica aimed to be a welcoming hub for all genres. Starting quietly, the shop gradually gained a strong reputation, fueled by the founders' ties to Koobla Records. Phonica thrived in its early years by championing emerging genres like electro house and minimal-micro house from labels like Kompakt and Perlon. In 2007, the Phonica record label was born, evolving into a platform for both staff and emerging talents, featuring early releases by now-established artists such as Peggy Gou and Four Tet. In 2023, celebrating its 20th anniversary, Phonica showcases its journey with 20 Years Of Phonica - a compilation boasting 18 exclusive tracks from established and rising artists across the label's diverse musical spectrum. Hot tips include tracks by Willow, Dorisburg, Ron Basejam, Roman Flugel and more!

DJ Snatch - "Soulful Dress" - (3:28) 138 BPM
Review: For a label that only launched this spring, four volumes of creatively executed party jams is beyond impressive. We reckon this could be Funk Fusion's best yet, too. From Rhythm Scholar's respectfully tripped out twist on "Lucy In The Sky" to Fabioulous Barker's slap-bass blazed take on Skeelow via the funkiest ever version of 2Pac's "California Love", it's an impressive collection that leans towards the more subtle art of editing rather than crass bootleg cut-and-shuts and will have a lot more timeless appeal as a result.

The Low Talker (Wyrus remix) - (6:17) 136 BPM
Review: Fans of Mark Williams may prefer the original versions on this release, but there is no doubt that this remix package scores highly on diversity. The remixes of "Change of Heart" range from the heavy, rolling tribal techno and whooshing effects of DJ Cristao & Toni Alvarez's take to the pulsing bass and chord stabs of Giacomo Stallone's version and Jesus Soblechero's tracky, stripped back interpretation. "The Low Talker" is also available in a variety of reshapes: from Josh Love's disco'n'strings sampling tribal pounder to Miche & Mirzinho's Ben Sims-inspired Hardgroove take and the grandiose swagger of Ortin Cam's epic take - indeed there is no doubt that there is something for everyone in the techno audience.

We Want To Play
Together In Love - (3:30) 136 BPM
Review: Brief Encounter were a nine-piece band from North Carolina who made their debut with 1977's 'Introducing' album. 'We Want To Play' followed on Music Town Records in 1981, original copies of which will set you back north of ?300... luckily, those democratising dons of the reissue Athens Of The North are on hand to bring you the same album for a fraction of the price! While not lacking in standout cuts - see the title track or 'Open Up Your Heart', for starters - it's an album that's perhaps most interesting as a musical snaphot of a time when 70s disco and soul was inexorably mutating into 80s boogie and electrofunk.

Cocoon Compilation T
Various
Jeroen Search - "Subversive Elements" - (5:34) 136 BPM
Review: The Cocoon compilation series has become an unofficial state of the nation statement for modern house and techno, and the latest instalment is no exception. It features deep, Detroit styled grooves from Damiano van Erckert and Stephen Brown alongside more accessible minimal house from Claude Von Stroke and murky, analogue jams, including the layered, dubbed out Daniel Avery track, "Your Future Looks Different in the Light". The compilation series has also been successful in spotlighting emerging artists, and volume T is no exception, as it shines a light on Yokto's bass-heavy deep house and the swaggering electro-techno of Defekt's "Terraform".

Somebody To Love Tonight - (3:02) 138 BPM
Played by: Que Sakamoto
Review: With this latest release on his fine Offen Music imprint, Vladimir Ivkovic has pulled off something of a coup. Ma is the first collaborative release from Ivan Smaghhe and Rupert Cross, a composer and sound designer who is best known for his work with fellow score maestro Patrick Doyle. It's an interesting and unusual set, with the duo utilizing a range of acoustic and electronic instruments to create tracks that variously touch on Don't DJ style polyrhythms, ambient mood pieces smothered in evocative field recordings, eccentric drone soundscapes, krautrock influenced compositions, shoegaze moods, and creepy, soundtrack style workouts. It's the kind of album that takes a few listens to really get under your skin, but it's more than worth the effort.
