Review: This impressively expansive collection from experienced remixer Valique showcases some of the best downtempo and Balearic edits from his popular V's Edits series. There's certainly plenty to get the blood pumping and the juices flowing throughout, from a chugging, ten-minute take on Pink Floyd ('Brickwall') and a pleasingly squelchy take on Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams' 'Lose Yourself To Dance' (here renamed 'Lose Your Elf'), to a chunky dub-house re-imagining of Jimmy Cliff classic 'The Harder They Come' and a loopy, hypnotic, mid-tempo disco-rock revision of T-Rex ('Jewelry'). Throw in party-hearty takes on cuts from Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and the Beach Boys (an odd but impactful reimagining of 'Good Vibrations') and you have a great value compilation.

Review: When operating under the V's Edits alias, re-edit maestro Valique can always be relied upon to bring the goods. It's little surprise, then, to find out that his latest collection of fresh cut-jobs - an epic affair featuring no less than 24 tracks - is packed to the rafters with high-grade fare. We don't have enough space to list all of the highlights, but we'd suggest checking out his rolling revision of Lee Dorsey's "Night People", the low-slung disco-funk heaviness of the Brass Construction rework ("Gotta Do It"), the intergalactic disco deepness of the Marvin Gaye revision ("Funky Space"), the lightly tooled-up, slowly unfurling take on Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica" and the sweeping, string-laden disco brilliance of "Miracle (V's Edit)".

Review: Taken from the nocturnal stashes of Zero 7 main men Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, the 17 tracks that go into this latest instalment of the Late Night Tales series provides a fascinating mix of hip-hop, soul, dub and acoustica. Fans of Zero 7's distinctive laidback hip-hop style will certainly appreciate beats from soulmates such as Yesterday's New Quintet or The Cinematic Orchestra (as on the classic "Channel 1 Suite"), while soul hunters will go nuts for the incredible '70s jazz-funk snap of Sylvia Striplin's "You Can't Take Me Away". With other names like Souls of Mischief, Don Blackman, Slum Village and The Stylistics included, this is a perfectly crafted late night journey.

Review: For those with a passion for soul, funk and disco, Dave Lee's recent Backstreet Brit Funk compilation was something of an essential purchase. You see, rather than revisiting well-known cuts from across the pond, it showcased a super-hot selection of long-forgotten British black music bangers. Here, some of those Brit funk obscurities get the re-edit treatment, with Ashley Beedle, Faze Action, Boy Norty and Onur Engin supplying the touch-ups. All treat the original material with reverence, preferring to subtly tweak and tease rather than rework. It's all good, with Faze Action's snappy beats and rubbery bass take on Elixia just nudging out Beedle's luscious jazz-funk extension of Nigel Martinez in the stand out stakes.

Review: The subtitle of this album tries to downplay the talent of this rising re-edit producer, but the truth is that these cuts are anything but ill-advised. Chopshop label boss DJ Butcher wouldn't put out a record if it wasn't any good and besides, he's not known for his bad advice. There are 12 disco gems here to explore, highlights include the sparse, teched-out soul-grooves of Alain Toussant's rare gem "Night People, the deep and woozy Balearic funk of "Go Donny Go" and a delicious electro-funk-pop version of "Inside Out", as made famous by Odyssey.

Review: Chug factor set to stun: Conducta ups the tempo for this latest UKG slapper. Driven by thundering 4/4 drums, powered by squelchy bass tones and polished with classic ravey vocals, it's straight out of the best chapter of the UK garage playbook. Remix-wise Deadbeat dips the tempo but ups the filth, Killjoy goes militant on the beats and paranoid on the low end while Dubzta adds moody trappist sentiments to the mix. Also included is Conducta's "Falcon", a more uplifting, hook affair; the synths could be straight out of early 90s Detroit while the bass is straight out of early 00s London. Heavy.

Review: What better way to celebrate a decade in business than by getting Chicago deep house legend Larry Heard to select and mix a double-disc compilation of label highlights? Hats off, then, to Rebirth, who managed to persuade Mr Fingers himself to deliver his first commercially available DJ mix. As you'd expect from both label and DJ, it's a wonderfully atmospheric and melodious affair, with Heard selecting and blending emotion-rich tracks and mixes from Chromatic Filters, Bocca Grande, NuFrequency, Tevo Howard, Motor City Drum Ensemble and James Teej. The first disc, in which Heard races through 28 tracks in just over 70 minutes, is particularly memorable.

Review: As the year comes to a close, labels are naturally offering up celebratory compilations showcasing their strongest releases of 2019. The latest comes from Midnight Riot, a prolific imprint that rarely fails to serve up the fieriest contemporary disco heat. As you'd expect, the 26-track selection includes a blend of superb original productions (the nu-disco soul warmth of Jack Tyson Charles' "Glory", Alton Edwards sweaty, synth-bass propelled boogie-house gem "I Just Wanna Spend Time With You", the swirling disco headiness of Arthur Baker's "Reachin' Out") and re-edits/reworks (Dr Packer's gospel boogie revision "The Power", C Da Afro's disco-funk slammer "Party Purpose" and the suitably celebratory "Boogie On Time" by Ladies On Mars). As you'd expect, the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout.

Review: Opening track "Orbit" with its menacing breakbeat and dark atmosphere gets things off to a nice start and there's more of the same later with "Reinforced Texture". The uplifting and soulful vibes of "1.200" could appeal to Planet E or Innervisions fans alike. There's also "Odd Soulz" with its razor sharp bassline and soaring synth leads which give way to a killer drop; peak time tech house done well. "Technicality" gets back into the breakbeat swing of things with dub delay aesthetics and a crunchy, junglised amen for good measure. But "Swathe" is the real highlight here; groovy, snarling acid backed by latin percussion on this impressive house jam.

Review: On his first album for over a decade, Ron Trent has chosen to showcase his undoubted skills as a producer and musician, offering up a collaboration-heavy set that pairs his usual warming electronics and hand percussion with band-style instrumentation (bass, drums, guitars, piano and more) and immersive, atmospheric vibe. The album was inspired by electronic/acoustic fusions of the early '80s and designed for home listening, so what you get is an inspired set of luscious downtempo cuts made in cahoots with the likes of Lars Barktkuhn, ambient hero Gigi Masin, legendary violinist Jean-Luc Ponty (on the incredible 'Sphere') and Alex Malheiros and Ivan Conti of Azymuth. As you'd expect given his track record over the last 30 years, it's a wonderfully produced and brilliantly executed album - one of Trent's strongest releases to date.
