Review: Grid Recordings always deliver tough, urban-edged sonics that don't prance around or act fancy, they just get down and dirty. Nick The Lot has delivered exactly that here, with a four-track EP of moody tones and no-nonsense drum lines. 'Rat Poison' is a perfect example of said drums, with impossibly clean hits and a clear sense of space and progression, its bass stabs are almost shadowed out. 'Hideous Creatures' is the most futuristic, with a deep back end and seriously cool synth spasms that lend it a techier feel than the other cuts on the EP. The other two are equally top-draw - make sure to check these.

Review: Freddie Dixon AKA FD has been doing his thing across a variety of labels for some time now, but it's in the last couple of years, and under the tuterage of Lenzman's The North Quarter, that he's really begun to shine. Lanta Nights is a couple cuts of gorgeous liquid and then three bassy, naughty rollers that smash of dub and soundsystem culture. It's a potent blend, and Akemi Fox is especially fantastic on 'Lie To You', a lounging, hip-hop endeavour that rolls out with the nonchalance it deserves. It's a superb EP and capped off with The North Quarter's typically well-refined aesthetic. Fantastic.

Review: It's time to inject a bit of soul into your day with Flone's new EP over on Liquid Brilliants. There's a lot of gloom in the world, so why not make it slightly less depressing and that little bit more amenable, right? Well, 'Little Creature In The Night' does just that with its charming array of synth lines and accompanying bass currents. It's melancholy, relaxed and slightly drunk all at the same time. 'Dreams' keeps up the cinematic feel with the sound of crashing waves and bubbling brooks which slowly recede into the background as another gorgeous melody comes into the fray, backed up by echoing percussion and a real sense of organic vibrancy. This reminds us of Fractale or Frederic Robinson - proper nice stuff.

Review: Fresh from his "Megatron" missives on Cave, Yoteii makes his debut on the rising new-gen outpost Breeze. Four tracks in total, each one of them packing his animated, springy signature. "No Choice" digs the foundations with a rubber ball bass riff that licks out in a classic early 2000s Q&A style. It's swiftly followed by the title track, which more than lives up to its name. Minimal in ingredients, maximum in flavour, you can file this one under 'serious creeper'. Elsewhere "Ratchet Man" plays a cool game of contrasts with a deep, velvet intro and a guttural greasy machine drop while "Creatures" closes business with a rasping, gnarly, gritty stampede. Monstrous.
