Review: Scottish ensemble The Haggis Horns have blazed a trail in the music biz since 1999, playing for the likes of Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Martha Reeves, Jamiroquai and John Legend. They also regularly performed their own sensational gigs and released records too. Now, after a slight hiatus, they're back with a third long player, "What Comes To Mind" on their own Haggis record label. Boasting ten tracks that pay homage to their 70s heroes (Kool & The Gang, Donald Byrd, Earth Wind & Fire) and featuring appearances by John McCallum, Lucinda Slim and John Turrell, it's a welcome return indeed.

Review: As ever, the Bomb Strikes imprint delivers an awesome package to us with this brand new 25 track compilation entitled 'Funk N' Beats Vol. 5', To be honest, it's exactly what it says on the tin as The Allergies head up waves and waves of funkadelic rhythms and crunchy riffs. For us the highlights have to be the futuristic drum processing and subtle percussive movements of 'Loose Gardner' from Flevans, along with the classic breakbeat fusion of 'Fire' remixed by Smoove but originally produced by the Renegades Of Jazz. With the sheer depth of the project it's easy to get lost within the tracklisting, which is always a good sign on a large scale compilation.

Review: Knee Deep In Sound has enjoyable a prolific and profitable 2021. As a result, this 15-track offering is packed to the rafters with vibrant and purposeful peak-time treats, including a string of cuts from high-profile artists such as CamelPhat and Hot Since 82. The latter's organ-heavy, '90s garage-influenced hook-up with Big Miz, 'Rules (Big Miz Mix)' is a highlight, as is the extra-percussive, 21st century tribal house flex of Yousef & CamelPhat's 'April' and the deep house dreaminess of Simon Doty's 'The Beacon'. Our other picks of a very strong bunch include the dark, throbbing drug-pump of Yousef & CamelPhat's 'One Summer' and the trance-tinged, sub-heavy tech-house rumble of Josh Butler's 'Roskill'.

Review: KAT's latest batch of hot-to-trot edits comes from Aussie DJ Stephen King under the freshly minted Virgo Type alias. He begins with "Can't Get it Out of My Head", a sublime soul rub full of slick, R&B style vocals, jaunty synth bass and shuffling, almost two-step style drums. On "Dancing Heart", King peppers a thrillingly low-slung dub disco/disco-funk groove with breathy vocal samples and early hip-hop style party "atmos", before subtly straightening out a classic chunk of vocal jazz on sublime, slow burning closer "Jazz Cigarette". All three cuts are brilliantly well put together and undoubtedly a cut above the maddening re-edit crowd.

As usual, label boss Yam Who has gathered together a selection of original productions, re-edits and remixes that prioritize frenzied limb shaking. Highlights include a deliciously deep and woozy, Joey Negro style M+M rub of Soulpersona's "Sunset City", a bouncy, boogie-meets-nu-disco revision of Hypnotic Lovers' "Chemistry" by Birdee, the sax-laden disco-funk shuffle of Stephen King's "Hold On To You", some soaring peak-time disco edit business from Alan Dixon and a suitably cheery, talkbox-sporting rework of an underground disco classic by long-serving edit crew Drop Out Orchestra.
