Review: Belfast label Touch Sensitive Records delivers The Host's second album, and only his second release altogether under that alias. The Host is actually Northern Irish bass scientist Barry Lynn aka Boxcutter, a producer who has put out a vast amount of material on Planet Mu, and a string of EP's on Scuba's Hotflush Recordings, among many others. Touch Sensitive has decided to go for his more abstract work, however, and judging by their previous compilation by London's Cherrystones, these guys are into the deep end. Esalen Lectures is an album that requires patience and an open mind to allow its moody soundscapes to enter your mind. Once tracks like "Submersion" or "Primate Change" gather their momentum and rhythm, though, The Host's arrangements will stick in the back of your mind like no other contemporary drone and ambient music. From dubbed-out sonic swirls to twisted blends of drone, this is gorgeous and comes heavily recommended.

Review: Incredibly, brothers Robin & Simon Lee have been providing us with their slick updates of the classic disco and house sound since 1995! This bumper 25-track collection tells the story from the birth of FA Records in 2006. There's a lot to tell too; it's packed with enough vintage-sounding grooves to shame the Paradise Garage. Highlights include Jay Shepheard's breezy remix of FA's debut "Original Disco Motion", FA's own Rocker's Revenge-esque, "Hypnotic (disco mix)", the linear, chugging arpeggiation of "Touch It" by The Shack, the loopy robot-funk of "Lifestyle 101" by Rudy's Midnight Machine, the moody "revenge mix" of FA's "I Wanna Dancer" and the killer retro house-isms of Miss Cheesecake's "You Must Create", exclusively provided for us lucky folks!

Review: Grubs up! Twisted Individual's cooked up a feast of undead delights for the first Zombie Recordings V/A collection and everyone's invited. Chewy, spicy and full of gully victuals, across the collection we're treated to all range of flavours; the peppery aftertaste of Filthy Habits & Jeopardize's "Mind Transfer", the fruity funk bursts of Imaginary Friends' "Rooftop Jam", the gamey aroma and meaty chugs of Yatuza & Nick The Lot's "Mystic Ways" and the sweet and sour textures of Alex SLK's "Kluture" are just some of the many highlights on the menu. Review: When it comes to celebratory, life-affirming musical positivity, you can't beat Midnight Riot's ongoing "Disco Made Me Do It" compilation series, which gathers together a mixture of re-edits, reworks and original productions from the label's vast roster of artists. At 24 tracks deep it's a bit of an epic, though we can happily confirm that the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout. Our current favourites include the Redux Inc re-edit of Casa Blanco's P-funk flavoured hip-wiggler, "Funk & Dub With You", the rushing, piano-powered house bounce of "Got Me" by Ladies on Mars, label boss Yam Who's sparkling nu-boogie revision of Phil Jaimes' "My Sensitivity" and the deep, groovy '80s soul flex of Chevals' "Thank You For The Ride".

Review: Though billed as a various artists compilation, this is essentially a career-spanning Faze Action 'best of' that also includes a handful of collaborations and contributions from their various side projects (Andromeda Orchestra, Rudy's Midnight Machine). And yes, it stretches all the way back to 'In The Trees'! Long-term fans will of course have much of the material featured here already, which makes the non-FA cuts even more welcome, but if you're just discovering the musical delights of the brothers Lee, then this collection is a great way to get better acquainted before delving into the full, extensive back catalogue...

Review: Greece's Timewarp label continues to plunder their disco reserves whilst flashing the proverbial funky cash willy-nilly. Yes we have another 16 fresh cuts (admittedly down from the last instalment's 31 so they should maybe think about tightening their wallets a little) on Freestyle 4 Funk 5. Timewarp is once again selector and some the many highlights he chosen here include the digi dancehall headnodder "Fyah Fyah" by Balkan Riddims, Jyal Funk's pulsating breaky electro rework of "Jamaican" by Funky Destination and the breathy jazzy shuffle of "Sensitive Kind" by Truez.

Review: A definite case of wearing your heart on your sleeve here, as Discoholics Anonymous serve up an eight-track collection of tracks built for when you and that special someone are (ahem) getting better acquainted. Some of the tracks here are straight-up re-edits - Gwen McCrae's "Let's Straighten It Out" becomes Lup Ino's "Tossing And Turning", while Billy Paul's "Let's Make A Baby" is reworked by The Found Sound Orchestra and FF Edits revisit a much-loved Bobby Caldwell classic. Others are seemingly original productions, while stylistically the album ranges from scratchy leftfield hip-hop to mellow Balearica to smooth soul... but as a set, it should serve its purpose perfectly.

Review: With a colossal 25 tracks, Deep House Extravaganza Volume 6 certainly delivers on its promise. It's an epic collection of snugly deep house nuggets that should tickle the fancy of anyone who likes their house warm, comforting and touched with the faintest whiff of sweat-drenched late night soul. There are forays into chunkier, more bumpin' territory (Junior Gee's familiar "Southside Hustle", the percussive thump of Caytaz and Patz "Watercat"), some pleasing Afro flavour (Qmusse's "Amasikko") and even a dash of pacey tech-house (Tan Atalar's pleasing "April"). The overall feel, though, is smooth, groovy and floor-friendly - and it delivers that with aplomb.

Grand prix business.

Review: Compilation of the month goes to this Tenor produced Deep in My Soul 2 various artist LP, put together by a label of those in the know outta Germany. Taking in the jazzy, soulful shuffle of Rick Wade in tracks like "Gotta Have Jazz" to Giorgio Moroder remixes, this collection of tunes gracefully captures the unique vibe and several strands of pseudo-contemporary-house. Standout numbers include Deeper Thoughts And Sensitive Soul's "Dream" while more progressive workouts come from Ben Muetsch. Keeping it dub and techno though is Dave Pad with his remix to Echonomist's "Kubrik Thursdays" alongside the warehouse aesthetics and reverberating basslines of Tayllor And Nick Pappa. Dub house, techno, disco and soul for alles.
