Soul Is High
Played by: THE NICEGUYS
Review: A three-way team-up here as Bomb Strikes regulars The Niceguys join forces with genre-bending Canadian duo PINEO & LOEB and Jamaican vocalist Jah'Mila, the daughter of Wailers guitarist Earl 'Chinna' Smith. Together they've come up with 'Soul Is High', an uplifting, pop-tinged soulful houser that wouldn't have sounded out of place on one of Hed Kandi's 'Beach House' comps back in the day, while The Niceguys go it alone to bring us the pure 90s house vibes of 'City! (How U Feel)', which recalls podium classics like Blast's 'Crazy Man' or Tony Di Bart's 'The Real Thing'. Arms will be raised aloft for sure!

The Warning
Review: Just when we thought the year had already come to a close for the Time Is Now crew, we saw this fabulous new box of treats land in the store, seeing Yosh return once again for what we believe to now be a final 2021 showdown. Featuring five sizzlers, this new EP kicks off with the spacious drum arrangements and bulging sub pulses of 'How We Roll', taking nostalgic samples and unique percussion to create something very colourful indeed. Next, '2 Times' unleashes a shuffling array of scattered rhythmic designs atop sticky subs, before the swirling pads and choppy breaks of 'It Goes' send us down a different avenue altogether. From here, the syncopated rhythmic switches and continuously evolving bass drives of 'Shape The Future' give us a more stripped back approach to the UKG sound, slowly introducing old school LFO sweeps into the mix as it moves forward. We then finally take in the spacious atmospherics of 'Pigments', which is supported by a dazzling display of percussive precision below, rounding off this EP perfectly!

Get It On Now
Review: Feel good breakbeat vibes are the order of the day as German duo CMC & Silenta serve up their first collaborative album. Loaded with cameo mic moments from the likes of Vanessa Iraci, MC Fava, Kawele, Linda Friedel, The Root Sellers and the legendary Ragga Twins, there's a true sense of party as we're led through all styles of party vibe. An ideal winter warmer that will grow and grow as you gear towards another summer, highlights include the Kraak & Smaak style disco boogie ("Where We Started From"), the sexy-smooth organ work and heavenly horn toots on "Love Is Drawn" and Madness-meets-Monkey Mafia musicianship of the album's title track. A very accomplished, not to mention funky, debut album.

Ghosts Of Then & Now
Played by: Scrimshire, DNN, Lone
Review: It's been five years since Manchester's Ryan Hunn made his debut under the now familiar Illum Sphere alias. This debut album for scene titans Ninja Tune has been a long time coming. So, is it any good? First and foremost, it's a lot smoother and melodic than his wonkier early work. While there are off-kilter rhythms paired with futuristic electronics (see "It'll Be Over Soon" and string-laden "Ghosts of Then & Now"), these moments largely play second fiddle to woozy, James Blake-ish soundscapes and tactile downtempo moments. It's a curious move, perhaps, but one that suits the album format. Certainly, when he really nails it - such as the distinctly Balearic "One Letter From Death" - it's nothing less than sublime.
