Review: Having featured on some of the label's compilations, Exercicis Ritmics is Oma Totem's first solo EP on Hivern. "ER-1" is based on complex drum patterns, which provide the basis for sweet deep house textures. On the second "ER", that approach evolves to include a chiming bass and filtered percussion. Meanwhile, the third iteration see the tempo increase - like Oma Totem's idiosyncratic take on 90s UK techno, featuring muffled vocal samples and belching tones. That interpretation of classic techno continues on the droning, hypnotic sound of "ER 4", while the fifth and final track closes out the release to the sound of slowed down but equally impactful dubbed out drums.

Time Stretch Totem
Time Stretch Totem - (9:05) 125 BPM
Lemuria - (8:28) 128 BPM Hot
Review: Here we are with another gems from Aniara Recordings which finally become available on digital format. This time, it's Alexander Berg, known by his stage name Dorisburg, who has been an integral part of the Swedish imprint since its inception. He has contributed both as a member of Genius of Time and as a solo producer. " Time Stretch Totem" marks his fourth endeavor on the esteemed label, where he delves into the enigmatic realm of late-night, basement-friendly deep house. Crafted with the intention of enhancing marathon parties, "Time Stretch Totem" blends hypnotic, tribal elements and evocative electronic textures. It embraces the distinctive clicking and undulating rhythms often associated with German tech-house, creating an immersive sonic experience that immerses listeners in its captivating aura. "Lemuria" takes a more percussively audacious approach, captivating audiences with its unique, broken-house groove. While the track incorporates enticing elements of tipsy, horror-tinged textures and effervescent tech-house sounds, the true allure lies in Berg's masterful beats, which reign supreme throughout the composition.

Review: Unruly Bristol bass business: Paragon does the bad smell thing and hangs around Foundation Audio after his last release. Dropping the tempo for his brother Chad Dubz, the result is two slabs of toxic dub primed for the darkest corners of the night, the dance and, ultimately, your psyche. "Totem" takes shamanic Berghain-style minor key arpeggios and smelts and hammers them over a two-step anvil while "Sirens" is an even heavier piece of apocalyptic rave music. All horns and alarms over a concrete tribal beat, it's yet another reason to keep your peepers locked on Paragon, Chad, Foundation and Bristol itself. Need a little chilly down time? Calm your nerves with DTR's deeper classic dub remix.

Totem - (6:07) 132 BPM Hot
Landet - (6:40) 127 BPM
Played by: Slam, Diagenetic Origin
Review: Totem is proof that Adam X's A&R skills are as sharp as ever. Diagenetic Origin come from Sweden, home to Adam Beyer and Joel Mull, and at times, this release sounds inspired by those 90s producers. The title track, with its driving, rolling rhythm and bombastic drums, could be a tribute to old Drumcode releases, while "Blossom" provides an update on that approach, with its snapping percussion and jarring, industrial beats. But the EP is well-rounded and "Sacred" sees Diagenetic Origin veer into broken beat territory, with eerie soundscapes unfolding over fractured rhythms. Meanwhile, "Landet" sees a lowering of the tempo but no sacrifice in intensity, with concrete beats and whiplash percussion prevailing.

Review: Canadian legend Jay Tripwire returns, this time for Mexico's Akbal Music with some deep and moody tech house journeys. The Vancouver native's past releases for the likes of local imprint Nordic Trax, Bass Culture and Superfreq over the years have cemented his status as one of the true heroes of the famous 'west coast sound'. The moody and esoteric "Drinking Ian" opens up proceedings, powered by its minimalist tribal rhythm and nefarious pads throughout. "Flykesh" is classic Tripwire all the way, on this sensual deep house cut for the late night. Finally, "L061C" sees him deliver a futuristic, techno inspired cut that's driving, bleepy and totally hypnotic - the sort of track you could expect him to play at Vancouver's infamous Gorg-o-mish afterhours.

Review: Simply Deep are at it again here as the Aerotonin's forward thinking bass project moves into a brand new package, this time housing some naughty breaksy bass hybrids from Imanzi. We kick off with 'Totem', which takes high energy drum inserts and combines them with writhing bass sounds, kicking the EP off with a serious dose of energy. Next up, we take a more steppers inspired road as Imzani joins forces with Mungk on the tribalistic tastings of 'Kapa Haka', before we land on the grimey synthesizers and wobbling kick patterns of '2147'. Finally, OME joins the party with a glitchy rethink of '2147', providing some new energies to round off the project in style.

Review: It's been a long time since we last heard from Kinfolk, but the broad-sweeping label with cosmic chuggery in its bones is back with this powerful dose from the duoa Jamie Blanco and Chris Stoker aka Ess O Ess and Saulrichards. "Totem" is an epic track that rolls around in the muck somewhere between shoegaze extravagance, post-rock heaviness and psyched-out electronics. The "Swamp Crawl" version of the track keeps the guitars bedded deep within the mix, but there's space for more expressive synth work. Hardway Brothers take the track on a similarly rockist journey, but take their time building up to a climax. Otologic wrap things up with a deadly dub that will have low tempo trippers rubbing their hands with delight.

Review: Kalahari Oyster Cult, a mainstay in the contemporary techno landscape, drops an expansive compilation. With a reputation for championing underground sounds, the label brings the same aesthetic to power the artistic direction of Chants. It means that the compilation veers in style from the deep, breathy groove of S.O.N.S & Go Dam's "Force Of Will" to Volodymyr Gnatenko's acid-riddled "Subra" and the jittery, tribal techno of Maara & Priori's "C'mon". Meanwhile, Sansibar's "Between Two Circles", with its focus on insistent bass, eerie synths and acid squiggles, ties all of these elements together. The label also deserves kudos for including Syzygy's "Can I Dream?" here. Originally released in 1994, its driving, hypnotic groove, tripped out melodies and out-there vocal samples laid the foundations for much of the music that it now shares this compilation with.

Review: Eskimo's long-running series of colour-coded compilations continues via "The White Collection", the label's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. Featuring an attractive, ear-pleasing collection of cuts that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face, the compilation jogs between colourful nu-disco, hazy house, sun-drenched Balearic beats, late night Italo-disco chuggers and the kind of happy-go-lucky 21st century synth-pop that Eskimo does so well. Highlights include, but are no way limited to, the melodious bubbliness of Michoacan's "I Can See", the cowbell-laden Scandolearic space disco throb of Cavego's "Alfred (Og Venene Hans)", the low-slung new wave sleaziness of Eliezer and Rina's |San Sebastian", and the fluttering, hypnotic Balearic bliss of Middle Sky Booming's drowsy "Dreamy Route".

Review: Cre8 Dnb Music do one thing, and that's pump out absolutely wild cuts of destructive D&B. That's their sole mission and, not for the first time, they've roped in Magenta to help them accomplish it, a producer who is more than familiar with the peculiarities of dancefloor pressure and twisted sonics. 'Black Dragon' is arguably the best cut on the EP, with absolutely wicked drums undergirding a Serum-esque display of dragged-out bass wizardry and gurgling force - the back-end on this track doesn't take any prisoners. The other tunes are trademark Cre8, with the punching stabs of 'Get Out' and the stepping aggressiveness of 'Totem'. Big stuff.

Review: Ricardo Tobar takes the listener to electronic music's outer limits on his latest artist album. Like the aesthetic of that other great producer of Chilean origin, Ricardo Villablobos, Continuidad is a sprawling, vivid affair. It moves from the gritty guitar sounds of "Les Vagues" and "Totem" into the jangling percussive rhythm of "Recife", before edging back into abstraction with dirge-like arrangements such as "Purple Sun, Rising" and "Vestigios". Tobar even touches on psychedelic textures on tracks like "First" - whose detuned guitars and tripped out nuances sound like early Pink Floyd getting it on with Spacemen 3 - but eventually makes his way back to the dance floor with the expansive groove of "Birds". Continuidad is a journey in the truest, most cosmic sense.

Review: Three years have passed since Horizon last rallied up the troops and embarked on a dead-night brain-burgling Dreamthief parade. As always it's an all-star cast with the likes of Amoss, Break, Naibu, Digital, Mikal, Mako, Need For Mirrors and many more cooking up some of their starkest, uncompromised and innovative cuts: the tight conga hypnosis of Breaks "Headway", the turbo piano rolls of Invaderz "Dukes Drift", the sublime cinematic jazz soul of Hydro & War's "Jam", the cascading, twinkling textures of Naibu's "Time Out", the neck-snap amen mechanica of Digital's "Spark Cut"... Review: As a label project within the dubstep scene, Hatched are starting to gain quite the reputation for bringing back some of the older yet highly missed faces within the dubstep circuit. Release number twenty-seven for them see's the return of Reso, who kicks off his comeback with metallic stabs and ramping bass sounds of 'Low Control'. Following this we look at the smooth sub rollings of 'Totem' and the super scattered drum crunches and bass licks of 'Ghost Castle'. This is a real dubstep masterclass from start to finish as we end on a high note with 'Gravel', a super creative expanse of dusty LFO pressure and writhing rhythms. Awesome stuff.

Review: The 88 BPM remix of "Inner Outer" by Salon Des Amateurs Toulouse Low Trax is an impressive slow burning affair perfect for the warm up with its exotic wooden percussion groove. The original being more lively with its soaring synth leads and tough beat, but equally good for getting the evening started. The Flavien Berger remix of "Totem" is a nice slice of dreamy slo-mo house with a slow but chunky arpeggio, murmuring vocals and overall trippy atmosphere. Finally "Genziana" gets his synth wizardry on tremendous fashion where numerous razor sharp analogue leads battle it out in a funky fashion.

Review: Long-running LA label Party Like Us Records (PLUR!) serve up a fine helping of Scandinavian dancefloor business from Finnish basstronaut Rico Tubbs. One of the most chameleonic talents currently working with bassline-led music, Riku Pentii is on fine form with his two original contributions to "the decidedly-noble" Iron Hearts EP. Up first, the title track pairs hoover bass with breakbeats, stabs and OG rave vocals and will appeal to anyone that likes to hear "Charly" by Prodigy in the dance, whilst "Totem" veers off into bassline heavy speed garage territory. Remixes of both tracks come from Skapes and Petey Clicks & Stranger respectively and offer something tougher.

Review: Having debuted back in 2014, Northern English act 2nd Sun has been winning support from well-known DJs like Skream. Listening to their latest release, it's no surprise that they enjoy such high-profile patrons. "Lazzie" is a hypnotic stepper that revolves around dense percussion and a series of drops and breaks. "Robot Romance" is in a similar vein, but sees 2nd Sun add some tripped out tonal blips and breezy melody lines to one of their typical floor-shaking rhythms. "Totem Spire" is more nuanced and sees tingling chimes and dubbed out effects woven over a filtered groove, but the end result is the same - club music with a uniquely left of centre sensibility.
