Review: Reel People Music's annual Soulful, Deep & Dope compilations always deliver exactly what the title promises, namely club-focused jams of the most positive, musically expansive and spiritually enriching kind. This year's edition is a particularly potent collection, with 20 tried-and-tested tracks to devour. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the tech-tinged deep house soulfulness of Mark Francis's remix of Opolopo and Angela Johnson's 'Stay This Way', and Glenn Underground's wonderfully musically expansive revision of Harold Matthews Jr and Sean McCabe's 'This Place', to the sunset-ready wonder of Matthew Brandy's 'Wish' (featuring an impeccable vocal performance by Josh Milan) and the soulful deep house brilliance of Atjazz and Shea Soul's inspired 'Home'.

Review: The annual summer edition of Reel People Music's 'Soulful, Deep & Dope' series, which offers up tracks they're pushing over the Ibiza party season, is always packed to the rafters with joyous, sun-splashed treat. 2023's offering is one of the strongest yet. Amongst the 20 tracks on show you'll finda blinding, Prince and P-funk-inspired Opolopo revision of Mother's Favourite Child and Saeeda Wright's 'Purple Funk', a lusciously deep, soulful and groovy Dennis Ferrer rub of Reel People and Angela Johnson's 'Can't Stop', a sensationally summery Jimpster re-wire of Thakzin and Ray T's 'Don't Let Me See' that sounds like vintage Atjazz, a frankly brilliant Crackazat remix of broken beat stalwart Modaji's 'Things U Do For Me', and a suitably starry collaboration between DJ Spinna and Phonte ('Tonight We Ride').

Review: Some 12 years have passed since Miguel Migs's Salted label delivered the first volume in the popular Flavor Saver series. Volume 24 begins with a fine chunk of bouncy deep house funk from WillowMan, whose "Just Around" is propelled forwards by fuzzy Clavinet bass, delay-laden high octave vocal snippets and rich, jammed-out electric piano riffs. There's a similar feel to the warm but driving goodness of Richard Scholtz's "Can U Feel It", while Vertigini's "Don't Stop" is a smoother and dreamier deep house number that nevertheless packs serious low-end punch. Best of all, though, is Distant People's "Feel The Drum", a wonderfully heavy and low-slung affair that we can imagine getting things going at San Francisco warehouse parties in the wee small hours.

Review: You don't get any more NYC than Manhattan disco/deep house hero Eli Escobar who presents his debut album on Luke Solomon's Classic Music Company. Starting out with the soulful feel good opener that is the title track, there's more quality on offer on the pure disco inferno "Phreeky" featuring Hercules & Love Affair's Nomi Ruiz on vocals (who appears on several tracks throughout the albums duration) and the cheeky "Chaka Khan" which is a bouncy after-hours jam for freaks and the deep low-slung groover "Next To Me". But that's just scraping the surface. The album is full of quality grooves from start to finish, inspired by one of the Big Apple's finest talents and we highly recommend it!

Review: There's something pleasingly old-fashioned about Happy Again, an album of alternative versions and remixes of tracks from Eli Escobar's acclaimed Happiness full-length. Thanks to the presence of DJ-friendly dubs, rhythm tracks and acappellas, it feels like Classic looked to the pioneering remix albums of the 1980s for inspiration. What really makes it stand out, though, is the quality of the material. Kon's rework of "Happiness (Part 2)" offers the perfect balance between subtle house and voodoo disco, while Soulphiction and Soul Clap steal the show with contrasting deep house takes on "Can't Stop Dancing" and "4 Luv". We're particularly impressed, too, with the freestyle-tinged revision of "Chaka Khan" by The Carry Nation, while Escobar's own dub of "Happiness (Part 2)" is a loose, warm and groovy treat.

Review: St Petersburg-based Sunner Soul AKA Alexandr Chebankov brings us the 14th installment in this long-running compilation series from his Vintage Music label. As with previous volumes, the emphasis is on authentically late 70s/early 80s-sounding disco and boogie jams that blur the line between "re-edit" and "sample-based", with a marked preference for tough, eyes-down groovers and slinky, meandering instrumental workouts rather than podium-friendly peaktime scream-alongs. In practice, this means that 'Vol 14' packs plenty of fresh ammo for your disco sets, even it there aren't too many tracks that'll jump out and grab you by the vitals on first hearing.
