CLUB E.A.S.E. - #2
1More Tune - (9:37) 122 BPM Hot
Whodunit - (6:17) 112 BPM
Review: George Evelyn serves up the second volume in what we're told will be an ongoing series of EPs featuring "club music made for basements and afterhours". Up first is '1More Tune', which has a vaguely Latin, carnival-esque kind of feel, but is driven along by a hefty, heavily treated bassline that whump-whump-whumps along throughout. Chuck in some acid-fried synth freakery towards the end and asses will shake to this for sure! It's accompanied by 'Whodunnit?', a slower-moving jam that's aptly titled, rocking as it does something of a film noir vibe with its tension-building horns and eerie pianos.

MINI002A
MINI002A - (4:53) 121 BPM
Review: Apparel Wax reworks 'She Was Once My Woman' by Muscle Shoals Horns - a breakout project from the in-house brass section at the legendary FAME Studios in Alabama, who backed everyone from Aretha, Wilson Pickett and BB King to Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. Released on the Monument label in 1983, the original was a mellow, melancholy affair made for late-night smoochin' but 40 years on Apparel Wax ups the tempo several notches and whacks a 4/4 kick underneath, making for something far better suited to dancefloor play. The male soul vocal performance is superb but naturally it's the horns that steal the show.

MINI001A - (4:26) 126 BPM
MINI001B - (4:40) 120 BPM Hot
Review: Inspired by mystery man Apparel Wax's childhood love of "45s", the 'MINI' series features tracks that can (and will) be released on seven-inch singles as well as digital download. To kick things off, the Italian producer has served up a pair of "summery and groovy" workouts tailor-made for outdoor DJ sets and sun-down daydreaming. Our masked hero begins with 'MINI001A', a deliciously loose-limbed slab of disco-tinged joy where sun-drenched strings, rubbery bass guitar and eyes-closed female vocal samples cluster around a bumpin' house beat, before opting for an even more soaring deep disco-house sound on the arguably superior 'MINI001B'. While it's as equally wedded to the power of house grooves, its' instrumentation is far more classy and sonically detailed.

Review: It's probably best we deal with the strange title before we get chewing on this rather ace album. Heavenz 2 Murgatroyd was a saying made famous by Snagglepuss, a character often spotted in the original Yogi Bear cartoons. Now we know this we can listen to Wax Romeo's uncompromising variety of bass flavours without any distractions. Which is good because there's heaps to take in. From the deep, driving contemporary take on early Chicago house ("Minti") to savage, snarling dubstep ("Foxycutioner") to slo-mo butt-shaking booty-soul ("I Don't Need U") this is a consistent collection of vibrant bottom end styles delivered with funk, humour and expert production skills.

Review: Amazingly, it's 25 years since George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn and then production partner Kevin 'Boy Wonder' Harper sat down and recorded "Dextrous", their monstrous, bleep-era classic on Warp. A quarter of a century later, Evelyn is still going strong, though the grooves have mellowed a lot in that time. Here, Warp celebrate the producer's epic career with a much-deserved retrospective. All the familiar favourites are present, from the rush-inducing thrill of early dancefloor smashers "I'm For Real" and "Aftermath", to the sinewy downtempo goodness of the decidedly Balearic "Les Nuits", the blazed hip-hop dub of "195 Llbs" and stoner soul of "70s 80s". This version also includes a number of exclusive remixes, with names like JD Twitch, Special Request, LFO, Morgan Geist and Loco Dice putting their own spin on this classic material.

Review: An album that's as ubiquitous in people's record shelves as Anthony Kiedis' Scar Tissue biography is for people bookshelves, Smoker's Delight has been the definitive Nightmares On Wax record since its original release 25 years ago. Regarded as one of the finest trip-hop albums of all time, this 20-track anniversary edition sees the inclusion of new and largely unheard material in the jazzy beatdown vibes of "Aquaself", and dubbed out piano loops of "Ascend". Extra bonus material includes a funk version of lounge time hit "Dreaddoverboard", and a live recording of Nightmares On Wax's all time classic "Night's Introlude". Take another hit.

Review: Chiwax are back this week with a more than welcome reissue of Wax Fruit's one-and-only release Whispers from 1994. This was one of many aliases used by Toronto-based producer Ron Allen, who some of you may know for his seminal work as one half of Psyance (with Hayden Andre Brown) who released on Plus 8, as well as his work under the names Aztech, The Apache Project and The R.A.S.E. The late night mood music of the title track is a true zeitgeist from the period in which it was released, while the looped-up, disco sampling deep house of 'Just A Party' or 'Mindgames' were equally as trendsetting as anything fellow Torontonians like Nick Holder or DJ Sneak were making at the time.

Review: If you like your deep house on the jazzy and organic side, then this collection of tracks from Apparel Music that were previously only available on vinyl should be right up your alley. Opener 'LP001A1' is a looping funk jam with a rousing Ohio Players-esque chorus, 'LP001A2' is a midtempo, shuffling affair, 'LP001B1' is a lively workout with even more of a jazz bent, while 'LP001B2' blends jazz, house, funk and lounge into one glorious, shimmying concoction. 'LP001C1' is a pacier cut for the soulful house floors that bites Julie McKnight's vocal from 'Diamond Life', 'LP001D1' is a fine slice of contemporary boogie, and so it goes on...

Review: Apparel Music Introduces the second chapter of their new series, by the Milan based artist 'who tears the dancefloor apart. ' APLWAX002 features groovy beats, catchy melodies and vibrant harmonies that come together to create a solid four track release with soul: the soul of the music they love to dance to. The whole EP moves together in an organic way, from the very first track "002A1" which is a slo-mo and definitely lo-slung late night joint. Then the dusty, late night Rhodes led deepness of "002A2" until the last one "002B2" which is infectious loopy downbeat business in the vein of Moodymann's "Mahogany Brown" era. It all creates an impactful musical story and everyone should be aware that the unknown mystery man is back in town!

Review: When it was first released on vinyl earlier this month, Apparel Wax's mysterious debut single was packaged with a cut-out-and-keep kit to create your own "Apparel Wax Goggles". Sadly, there's naturally no such freebie bundled with this digital edition, so you'll have to make do with the unknown producer's brilliant music instead. Highlights come thick and fast, from the hazy, soul-flecked, gospel-propelled disco-house warmth of opener "001A1" and sample-heavy jazz-house positivity of "001A2", to the swirling orchestral samples and bustling peak-time beats of "001B1", which niftily re-casts an easy listening disco cut as a spiraling dancefloor anthem. The looser and more languid "001B2" completes a tasty package.

Review: If the tongue-in-cheek press release accompanying last year's first Apparel Music release is anything to go by, Apparel Wax is a "vinyl-faced artist" who "tears dancefloors apart". There's certainly no denying the club-ready status of his or her output. For proof, check the artist's fifth release, which begins with a wonderfully celebratory chunk of breezy, sunshine-ready disco which has been slightly pitched up up satisfy the demands of house-loving dancefloors. "005A2" sees our vinyl-faced hero make merry with a chiming chunk of '80s soul rich in slap bass and sweeping strings, while "005B1" is a bouncy, piano-heavy workout crafted from bits of another '80s workout. Closing cut "005B2", on the other hand, is a fairly "straight" edit rich in sweaty drums, jammed-out electric piano solos and bustling bass guitar.

Review: Apparel Music regular Apparel Wax - a shadowy man of mystery who has never revealed his identity - returns to the imprint with something special: a mixtape style release made up of his own previously unreleased, and obtusely named, tracks. You'll find the mix itself tucked away at the end of this digital version, but we'll concentrate on the tracks themselves, which take a colourful, inviting, gently jazzy and supremely sun-splashed approach to deep house. Highlights include the hands-in-the-air, disco-flecked goodness of '006A1', the '80s soul-sampling '005A2', the rainbows of sonic colour that is the peak-time ready '003B' and the tooled-up re-edit style afternoon delight that is 'LP001A1'.

Review: For the uninitiated, 4evergreen is Apparel Music's "back catalogue" series, with each multi-artist EP sporting cuts from the Milan-based imprint's bulging archives. To kick things off, we're taken back to the birth of the hush-hush, vinyl-focused Apparel Wax series and 2017 debut offering '001A1', a jazzy, sun-splashed slice of sample-heavy deep house goodness, before we're given another chance to savour Hurlee's brilliant 2018 cut 'In The Sunshine', a sing-along slab of summery deep house warmth tailor-made for festivals and al-fresco parties. Next the Italian imprint mines Modulearth's 2015 set 'Blue Note' to rescue Moony Me's sensationally sub-heavy, sunrise-ready rework of 'Broken Memories', before rounding things off with 'For Gil and New York' by Francesco Zani - a killer 2013 peak-time house workout with jazzy flourishes that makes great use of Gil Scott-Heron samples.

Review: We last heard from Apparel Wax back in January, when the man (or woman) of mystery unleashed a second scorching EP of high-grade deep house on Apparel Music. For EP number three, the Son of Sleeveface takes a different tack. The untitled opener, for example, is a layered, floor-friendly, jazz dance-friendly sample collage full of vintage funk drum breaks, swinging percussion solos, fluid jazz piano solos and less than subtle nods towards hip-house. While a little messy, it's undeniably enormous fun. Track 2 sees old wax-chops beef up and slightly weird out a jaunty, horn-heavy Afro-funk cut, while the track 3 excursion is a romping deep house revision of a swirling and chiming '80s soul hit.

Review: There's something a little bit silly about this beefy mash-up extravaganza from Actual Sounds. Take lead cut "59th Street Groove", for example. Built around a ribcage-rattling wobble bassline and snappy breakbeats, it twice breaks down to reveal an extended Simon & Garfunkel sample. Really. It does work, mind. Elsewhere, you'll find a crunchy fusion of wobble-heavy hip-hop and funk-rock licks (Big Bang Breaks' "B Boy Flip Trick"), while Mr Mezdup sticks ten tons of TNT up the backside of Yes's party standard "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Wasted On Wax draw proceedings to the close with a heavy breakbeat tweak of Prince's oh-so-Balearic singalong "Raspberry Beret".

Review: Kate Wax joins James Holden's Border Community and fits right in instantly. Wax's is a dark, haunted take on pop music, with the kind of minor-key tones and drones that pervade her new home across its considerable legacy. While there's been a penchant for fuzzy production values in this kind of music this year, Wax instead has a refreshing airiness to her tracks without holding back on the elements. Where some of her contemporaries come off sounding stilted or just plain try-hard, Wax sounds assured and alluring in her execution of the cohesive idea that makes up Dust Collision.

Review: Italy's Edoardo Barbi, aka Gledd, who's previously racked up releases on Masterworks Music, Whiskey Disco and other labels, comes to Saint Wax with a funk/disco four-tracker. As far as we can tell the four cuts are all original productions rather than re-edits - albeit extensive use has doubtless been made of the sampler - with 'Behind A Cloud' a laidback, looping summer shuffler with snips of male soul vocal, 'Want Somebody' and 'Sweet Love' more uptempo, disco-oriented affairs, while 'I Hold You' brings the authentically 70s-sounding, Blaxploitation-esque funk vibes. Any/all of the four should keep funk n' disco floors moving nicely.

"Gimme Your Love" and "African Love Song" cover the former with rolling soulful grooves and raw, Afrocentric gospel-funk respectively. Then we hit the '80s with "Records Keep Spinning" reworking "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", and Gino Soccio's masterpiece "Dancer" getting a glorious extending.

There are four winter warmers on here "Learn How To Dance" kicks things off with an infectious 70s guitar and clavinet groove that should make learning easy, "SuperFunKey" is like what the title suggests - a roaring retro funk stomper, "Master Of The Game" takes a very Chic sounding slice of slick old New York sizzle and beefs it up just ever so slightly. Finally the title track wraps things up nicely with an orchestrated slo-mo head nodder.

Here on "Fantasy II" Alien Disco Sugar unwittingly drop the terminally uncool pan pipe bomb. But you know what? In the context of this saucy disco house roller, it works! Elsewhere we get sassy space funk ("Try It Out"), a retweak of Ron Hardy classic "Everybody Get Down" by Mouzon's Electric Band and the proto Balearic synth-pop of "Union A".

Review: Here comes label owner DJ Minx teaming with veteran Gari Romalis (aka DJ SCSI) to make this EP, Tronic D, a complete Detroit affair. First, Minx opens with the perfect afterhours vibe with the jazzed-up minimal house groove of 'Cocktail Or Two followed by Romalis' sensual mood music on 'Goin' Down'. Minx goes deeper with the hypnotic chords of 'Stiletto Stroll' while Romalis serves up some serious attitude on the late night basement wall shaker 'Stomp Da Yard'.

Review: Nearly 30 years in the game and the Paper crew don't show any signs of slowing down in their old age just yet, as they bring us this 22-track collection that, just in case the title wasn't clear, showcases the best of their disco/nu-disco output from the past 10 years or so. Featuring cuts from the heavy-hitting likes of Yam Who?, Bill Brewster, Late Night Tuff Guy, Fingerman, Richard Norris, Andy Buchan, Flash Atkins, Girls Of The Internet and James Rod, you shouldn't need us to tell you how good this compilation is. But just to be clear, it's really very, very good indeed...

Review: Apparel Music's latest compilation series, Coffee Club, has been designed to showcase "laidback vibes and soulful grooves" of the sort that can provide the perfect accompaniment to supping on a latte, long black or double espresso. The six tracks on show on volume one undoubtedly hit this brief, with highlights including the sinewy, ultra-deep, sunrise house wooziness of Apparel Wax's '0091A', the vibraphone-laden, early St Germain-esque wonder of 'Soul Haze' by Sek, the jazzy and dubby lusciousness of Sune's 'En Saga', and Girls of the Internet's deep, dusty and chunky remix of 'Everytime' by Jason Heresco, where vintage female vocal snippets, tactile electric piano chords and a jazzy bassline all catch the ear.

Review: When it comes to underground dance music, there are few outposts of creativity that are boasting as high a rate of success as Alix Perez's '1985'. We are blessed to take a look into a window of that creativity with this monstrous new collection of sonic sizzlers as Shades, Alix himself and Eprom join forces for the explosive 'From A Vein' album project. This is a true showcase of mastery in our eyes, from the sub-rattling drones of 'Into Stone' to the super electronic syncopation of 'As Wax By Seal' and acidic arpeggios of 'Deceitful Ways'. We are thrown in about 1000 different directions over the course of this 14 track masterclass, with our favourite creations having to include the remarkably chirpy 'Purification' alongside Gaslamp killer, exploring organic drum breaks and super digitised basslines, next to satanic melodic sweeps of 'Sub Noctem' and unpredictable metallic soundscapes of 'Immortals', welcoming MC GQ into the fold at the same time. Outstanding!

Review: If you've ever wondered what you might hear if Nightmares on Wax man DJ E.A.S.E invited you back to his Ibiza villa for a post-club crack on, this edition of the long-running "Back To Mine" series has all the answers. Naturally, it's as hazy, stoned and soulful as you'd expect, with the Warp Records stalwart shuffling between stunning hip-hop soul (Children of Zeus, Ladi6), deep synth-soul (Creative Principle), sun-kissed good-time grooves (Bosq, Massimo Vaoni), Imagination-sampling nu-disco (Dim Zach), simmering jazz-funk (Chieftain) and dubby early NYC house flavas (SBM). There's naturally also a sprinkling of his own productions, including a loved-up, string-laden house version of "Russia" by Fat Freddy's Drop.

Review: The Editorial label like their tunes slow and groovy, and here we have their 15th comp of such laconic boogie numbers. There are four varieties of disco flavours to try here beginning with Tony Tee's dubbed out disco-house jam, "Can I Get Def", before progressing on to Woodhead's shimmering poolside workout "Cinnamon" the fastest tune on here. From there it's back down to the raunchy slap-bass loops of "West Garda Lake" by Stereo 12 and winding up nicely with the warm Mediterranean breeze of "You're A Dream" by Arequipa Ensemble.

Review: Given the title and the hefty track count here, you might be expecting a collection of 50 hastily thrown-together generic club "bangers" - but nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Italian stalwart Ferreri has put together a truly excellent selection of house tracks that span from the very deepest, jazziest of grooves (see his own 'Jazz Imprint', for starters), to raw soul/disco strutters (Zove's 'Feeling', Soul Divide's 'Hanky Panky') to bump 'n' grind garage jams (Chemars' 'Deep At Night', to unashamed party starters like Filta Freqz' 'Dope Demand' and 'Da Hitman', which make free with big chunks lifted from classics by King Bee and Cutty Ranks/Eek-A-Mouse, respectively. Featuring scene faves like Johnick, Italobros and Jazzman Wax, this compilation is an absolute must.

Review: Following the release of Part 15 during the summer, Innervisions drop the latest secret weapons that feature in Dixon and Ame's sets. With a focus on vocals and woozy melodies, this collection captures the energy of the Innervisions owners' DJing. A case in point is the flowing groove and haunting tones of Ivory & Filippo Nardini's "Could You Feel The Love" or Hardt Antoine's woozy, acid-frazzled and appropriately named "Inside Your Mind". On other occasions, the collection veers close to pop territory, audible on the electronic groove of Cipy's "Trip" or flirts with 80s synth pop and electronic disco on Samantha Loveridge's "The Pusher". But no matter the direction, like all previous selections, Secret Weapons 16 makes for essential listening.

Review: Given the recent upsurge in interest in the back catalogue of seminal Chicago label Dance Mania - particularly the ghetto booty side of their output - it seems fitting that Strut have finally given the label the retrospective treatment it so richly deserves. The whole story is here, from the early jack tracks of Hercules, The Housemaster Boyz and Victor Romero, to the stomping rhythms of DJ Funk, Dj Deeon and Robert Armani (whose ghetto-meets-acid jam "Ambulance" is a riotous highlight). Along the way, there are classics aplenty, alongside lesser-known gems from the vaults (see Parris Mitchell Project's ace "Ghetto Shout Out (feat Wax Master)" and Paul Johnson's thrilling "Feel My MF Bass"). Whether you're a Chicago house connoisseur or not, this should be essential listening.

Review: As ever, the Bomb Strikes imprint delivers an awesome package to us with this brand new 25 track compilation entitled 'Funk N' Beats Vol. 5', To be honest, it's exactly what it says on the tin as The Allergies head up waves and waves of funkadelic rhythms and crunchy riffs. For us the highlights have to be the futuristic drum processing and subtle percussive movements of 'Loose Gardner' from Flevans, along with the classic breakbeat fusion of 'Fire' remixed by Smoove but originally produced by the Renegades Of Jazz. With the sheer depth of the project it's easy to get lost within the tracklisting, which is always a good sign on a large scale compilation.

Review: Toolroom is back with the second instalment of the 'House Party' series, with Chicago veteran Gene Farris, the enigmatic Wh0 and ascendant duo Raumakustik closing out the summer in style with their respective mixes. Featuring 80 tracks from leading international names including Carl Cox who goes for a minimal vibe on his remix of Hannah Wants & Kevin Knapp's "Call Me", Hot Since 82 serves up something different than usual on the summertime vibe of "Rise", Saved chief Nic Fanciulli gets some spiritual and life-affirming vibes in effect on "Virgo", Hamburg disco stu Tensnake gives Dombresky & Boston Bun's "Stronger" a neon-lit makeover and label boss Mark Knight impresses with the funky house anthem "Tonight" ft. Chenai and Mr. V.

Review: DJ Cam & sommelier Fr?d?ric Beneix present Wine4Melomanes, an eclectic and unique compilation and album concept that matches fine wines with music of the same year. Connecting the complexity, sensuality, liveliness and other mouthfuls with the harmony, orchestration, rhythm and melody of a song, Wine4Melomanes tours France, Germany, Holland, the USA and even Slovakia in search of some fine musical flavours. Taking in jazz, pop-rock and '70s blues through to more contemporary affairs, highlights include the ragtime jazz funk of Siegfried Kessler & Serge Bringolf to some organic lounge time numbers from The Mike Nock Underground and The Larry Rose Band. Like a fine wine, obviously.

Review: With Ibiza's extended summer season almost upon us, Toolroom has served up a suitably epic collection of cuts that it expects to be big on the White Isle this summer. Label boss Mark Knight has provided a trio of DJ mixes ("Poolside", "Club" and "Afterclub") and the unmixed tracks included all fit into these loose categories. There's not enough room to list all of the highlights, but we've been enjoying the funk-fuelled disco-house rush of Illyus and Barrientos' "The One", the sleazy, bass-heavy bounce of Max Chapman's "Steppa", the acid-powered tech-house-jack of Del-30's "Gravity" and the weighty, mind-altering thump of "Low End Theory" by Eli Brown.

Review: While the "garage revival"/"90s house" backlash has already begun in earnest, it doesn't seem to have adversely affected the boys at Local Talk. In fact, there's an argument to say that their releases are actually getting stronger. This EP from potty-mouthed maker of "vagina music" (his words) Lee Webster is another doozy. Fluid, deep and comfy, recalling classic US deep house and garage of times gone by, it should appeal to anyone whose DJ sets veer towards the sensual. There's little to choose between the four tracks (in truth, they all use similar vocal hooks, melodies, chords and synth settings), though the chunkier, slightly rougher "Wax Your Body" would be our pick.

Review: Territroy is a collaboration between Panagiotis Melidis, who produces as Larry Gus, and Stathis Kalatzis, who used to work as Mr. Statik. Issued on Dekmantel's UFO spin-off, it's a dubbed out masterpiece. "Delirium Vivens" is a rolling, vocal-sample heavy groove, while "Wax Smiles" sees the pair drop a more abstract piece, with dead-paced drums supporting the swirling voices. On "Sleeping Fury", there's a more dramatic approach with plucked strings prevailing while "Instar" is a deeper affair, pushing the project closer to what could be deemed to be conventional techno. It's only a temporary dalliance however, and "Upside Down Sinner" marks a return to the kind of swirling, psychedelic dub that makes this album so enthralling.

Review: Progressing from underground remix heroes to full-on electro superstars in a breathless whirl, the Crookers have learned the lessons from their debut LP. Instead of trying to encompass all manner of styles and tempos, as they did on Tons of Friends, their latest Dr Gonzo project sees them fixed firmly on the floor with 13 huge club/electro/bass bangers to bug out to. Shorn of their original chewy basslines and fidgety drums, Crookers in 2011 are tighter and leaner, as evidenced by spooky opener "Dushi", while the demented leads and sub-punishing simple bass thuds of "Dr Gonzo's Anthem" are also a treat. Their first outing, the stutter-tastic "Bust 'Em Up" (done with Savage Skulls) is thankfully included, while guests including His Majesty Andre, Style of Eye, Surkin, Neotric and Wax Motif make for an impressive supporting cast, especially on the gabba-techno recalling "Texx".

So, what can you expect from Junodownload's exclusive Apparel Music collection? In short, a sublime mixture of dreamy, dub-wise, slow-motion deepness (Roy Giles remixing Ahautzab), tactile and immersive deep house goodness (Eddie Shkiper, Desos), colourful fare rich in jazzy instrumentation (Four Walls' superb 'Hello Underground'), jazz-funk-flavoured nu-disco (Polar Lights) and high-grade peak-time fare (a typically dusty and warming slab of excellence from the legendary Delano Smith).

Review: Nic Fanciulli's Saved imprint is absolutely synonymous with sweaty peak-time super clubs on the island and what better way to celebrate this season than a collection of killer tracks courtesy of their artist roster. It's all sure-fire and anthemic hands in the air business, that'll have just as many ladies as there are blokes on the dancefloor. Some notable highlights being Noir's booming "Bodyback", the pre-peak time percussive funk of Sergio Fernandez' "Kuery" or Chico Secci's "Sooper Seven" and the absolute peak time banger that is "Sup" by Carl Bee that will have no doubt destroyed many a soundsystem this summer. Usual suspects such as James Organ, Okain and Julien Sandre appear also, making this release a worthy addition to any serious tech house DJs arsenal.

Review: Years ago, if someone offered you some street jam you'd have said no; jams made of pavement and general dirt just don't make the cut for an all-star breakfast. Then Actual Sounds comes along and your understanding completely changes. Gone is the gritty, fag butty, exhaust pipey grime and in comes the royal block-rocking fodder from some of Actual Sounds' finest funky upstarts. Comprising sneaky booties and authentic grooves, this 18-strong collection is a one-stop-shop to party town. Highlights include Mr Mezdup's percussion and glitch-heavy rub of The Specials "Ghost Town", Rory Hoy's high voltage acid attack "Hey!" and Freddy Fresh's beautiful seasonal sonic soliloquy "Summer's End".

Review: Four volumes in seven months... Actual Sounds are ruthlessly efficient when it comes to showering the scene with fresh booty-shaking bootlegs. And it's business as usual as we're thrown around by the limbs to a 28-track strong selection of wide-eared funk fusions that range from an uptempo breakbeat cut n' shut of Nina Simone ("Ooh Baby") to Brooklyn era block busters ("Down With The King") via classic rave-meets-early house mashery ("A Bigbeat Treat"). A bargain and banging - these booties are keepers.

Review: If your record bag/CD wallet/hard drive (delete as appropriate) is flagging under the weight of soul-sapping breakbeat bootlegs and ill-advised ghetto funk remixes, help is at hand. This compilation from Actual Sounds does contain plenty of sneaky bootlegs and ghetto funk style reworks (including one that bites "Sweet Home Alabama"), but they're all of a much higher quality than we've come to expect of late. There are snappy trips into boogie breaks territory (Big Bang Breaks' "French Funk"), wobble-funk (a thunderous version of the Jacksons' "Rockin' Robin") and Madchester revivalism ("Free Soup"), not to mention a string of booty-licious ghetto funk stompers. If this doesn't wake you up, nothing will.

Review: The Artist Series Volume 1 sees Actual Sounds gather together a bunch of their artists to provide an expansive selection of bootleg breaks, ghetto funk and jungle reworks of tracks from well-known artists, namely Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, The Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill. While there's a certain drunken office Christmas party silliness to the Fab Four reworks, the more hip-hop inclined reworks are much more successful. There are plenty of confirmed party-starters, from the synth-heavy P-funk breaks of Funky Wah Wah's "Beastie Noise (That's Resin Funk)", to Big Bang Breaks' multiple reworks of "Insane In The Brain" (the first of which, a straight-up party hip-hop take, is the bomb).

Review: Simma Black has been in fine form of late, so it's no surprise to find that this bustling collection of new music and recent label highlights, compiled to coincide with the dance music industry's annual weeklong celebration in Miami, is something of a belter. There's plenty of variety across the peak-time ready tracklist, from the intense, trance-like builds and classic U.S house style grooves of Low Steppa's "One Day" and the piano house-plus-wobble bass brilliance of Martyin Badder's "Feel Loved", to the bumpin' New Jersey garage revivalism of Greco's "Move Your Body" and the dark, angular, bass-heavy late night filth that is David Keno's "Rip & Pop".

Review: Since launching in 2012, Jaymo and Andy George's Moda Black label - an offshoot of their already successful Moda label - has steadily risen to become one of the most well-regarded house labels around. The imprint's style - a tactile, atmospheric blend of tech-house, deep house, bass and woozy, funk-fuelled big room grooves - seems to have a knack of capturing the zeitgeist. Here, the two label owners deliver the third instalment in their annual mix series, showcasing tracks released by the imprint in the last 12 months. Smooth, accessible and entertaining, with plenty of standout cuts (see the warehouse acid of Sidney Charles' "Wax Digger '88" and Hauswerks & Saul Summers' sweaty "Just Want U"), Moda Black Volume III is a fitting celebration of a label whose stock continues to rise.

Review: The Elektrik Carousel represents Ghost Box regular The Focus Group's most substantial work to date, taking his composite of library music, musique concrete and uneasy samples and stretching it across 29 tracks. Although somewhat more fractured then previous work, the psychedelic effect afforded by Broadcast's studio assistance makes this one of the most immersive, melodic examples of hauntology to date.

Review: As Faded Ranger Nick Maurer (Greenskeepers) and Neville Attree (Gumption) have been raising eyebrows (and their profile) with a trio of killer retro-futuristic singles earlier this year. Now it's time to drop the debut album, Mechanical Tonight, and it certainly lives up to the hype. Partly recorded in Attree's basement studio ("held together by string and sellotape" apparently), the album boasts 13 tracks exploring the moodier, more sumptuous side of electro-house. Highlights include the sleazy basement funk of "U Don't Care", the hazy Balearic body music of "Get Together" and the Heaven 17 on steroids groove of "Blindfolds".
