Review: Serious hard-stepping sounds from the Advisory Manchester connection on this set of jungle-inspired large ones. Take it back to the old school with "Schoolboy", an instant classic with the pedigree to carry it far or revisit your youth with "Dubwave Anthem", a tune that epitomises summertime all-nighters and renegade ways. "Some Choon Fi De Gyal Em" gets things rolling and final tune "Pass the Tu Shen Peng" rocks some laid-back vintage reggae vibes. Get skanking.
Review: Longstanding junglist Sappo continues his timeless drum magic with another uncompromised "Jungle Rollers" collection. Taking the driving seat, he kicks off with an amen-focused roller with mild jazz tones on the fittingly titled "1996". 6Blocc takes us back another three years to 1993 when the ragga-jungle relationship was in its honeymoon. All rattling drums and precision-placed ragamuffin vocals. Alpha & Tim Ryan continue the skank-minded approach with a killer Courtney Melody sample and classic badboy rolling groove. Finally Connecta joins the dots between jungle and drum & bass with a robust slab of rolling rawness that wouldn't go amiss in a Hazard or Potential Badboy set.
Review: V Recordings: A genus source for drum and bass, the launch pad of so many great careers it's not worth counting and still a consistent source of forward-thinking beats. If any label can justify five volumes of back-cat badness, it's Bryan Gee's. Going right back to 1993 (Roni Size's "Timestretch"), we whistle, rattle and roll past some of the label's (and scene in general's) titans. Dillinja is repped hard with an array of discography highlights such as the shattered amen attack plan ("Bad Man"), Krust is paid in full with cuts such as the minimal muscle roller "Set Speed", jungle godfather Sappo reminds us of real old school with "Into The Light" while Future Cut's later-era "Prophecy" is rewound to great effect. And that's just five of the album's 21 chapters. A must read document for junglists old and young.
Review: Northern scene legend Adam Wigglesworth sadly passed away on April 3. This is how his friends responded... By compiling one of the biggest tribute albums drum & bass has ever seen. Just look at the amount of talent on here: Pyxis, Euphonique, Nvrsoft, No Concept, Exile, Euphonique, Dawn Raid and so many more artists have contribute to this 45 track album of which all proceeds go to Adam's family. From the blazing bass riff of Sappo's late 90s style neck snapper "Hannibal" to Exile's turbine bass growler "Symbiosis" via Sl8r's jazzy, almost Detroit style vibes on "The Mill" and various bits from Wiggo himself, this is a heartfelt salute from the entire scene to a man who'll be sorely missed.
Review: 24 Karat presumably get their name from the measurement for gold and this compilation is, by any stretch of the imagination, full of weight. Featuring tunes from artists old and new in the 24 Karat camp, this album stretches across 17 heavy, dancefloor numbers. The first outing, 'Heavy Hitters' by Danny Styles, is classic funk-into-dancefloor vibes and we love the array of twisting, snarling basses that fans of this producer will recognise. Danny is a regular throughout this one and he nails it consistently. Shouts also to Faysha on the sweet 'Heavy', as well as Keith Patience on thee crazy jungle number that is 'HeadShot'. Big.
