Review: Melbourne-based Kiwi Lance Ferguson is a jack of all trades really: producer, songwriter, guitarist, radio broadcaster, DJ and recording artist. His latest offering entitled Raregroove Spectrum is a collection of newly recorded versions of classic funk, soul, jazz and latin vinyl rarities. It features some of Melbourne's finest musicians across the album, including past and present members of local acts The Bamboos, The Putbacks and Hiatus Kaiyote. Ferguson explains that some of these versions can almost be looked at as re-edits: extending/teasing out the elements in a song to make them work on the dancefloor - except he went the extra step and re-recorded them with a live band.

Review: We're not sure if Gil Scott Heron ever found himself stood on an Ibizan tabletop, utterly off his nut and singing praises to the throbbing sunrise, but the mesmerising DJ Vas re-edit of this GSH tune is evidence enough for us. Elsewhere he ain't bad either - subjecting some disco-era Herbie Hancock to heavy filtering frolics, getting his nasty groove on applying some proto EBM vibes to some killer funk cuts on "The Price" and winding up with some hands-in-the-air, sunny French Touch-style thrills on "Sweet Power Your Embrace".

Review: As the title suggests, this fantastic - and let's face it, pleasingly epic - compilation showcases some of the many disco-centric cuts in the Z Records vaults, throwing in a few exclusives (see Dave Lee's fantastic, hybrid disco-boogie rework of Firefly's 'Love is Gonna Be on Your Side') for good measure. Such is the high-quality threshold that picking stand outs is tough, but our picks of a very strong bunch include the slick, boogie-funk brilliance of Crackazat's 'Sensationalized', Larry Levan's vintage, delay-heavy synth dub of Johnny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love', the stomping disco-house release of 'Gotta Thing (2021 Remaster)' by Foreal People, Taana Gardner and Dave Lee, and John Morales' epic rework of Sean McCabe's 'Love For Life'. As the old saying goes, this is all killer and no filler.
