Long time in the making, the unfailing US jungle champion has been pushing the sound long before the exciting current fervour for it and it really shows as he rolls out a timeless array of soulful styles. From the subtle bluesy hardcore vibe-out that is the title track itself (with Shamanga) to the more brutalist Renegade-flavoured fire of 'California Heat' (with Rain Forest) via the V-level jungle soul of 'Dime Piece VIP' and the Digital & Spirit-esque breakbeat battering ram 'Gully Goat', Calculon's deep roots in this game and years as a DJ and a consistent ambassador for the culture are really paying off here. This is an exemplary body of work that'll make DJs and home listeners beam. Keep it moving.

Review: Iason Chronis has released a ton over music under the Mason alias over the last two decades, though nothing quite as cheery, celebratory, colourful and mixed-up as this album on Toolroom. His third full-length in total, "Frisky Biscuits" was produced during lockdown and was intended to be a much-needed shot of musical positivity. We'd say he's hit the mark, delivering a set that cheerily struts between strobe-lit disco-house fun, revivalist boogie, his interpretation of South African kwaito/mid-'80s dance music, Italo-disco, skewed synth-pop, squelchy, synth-laden hip-hop, hands-in-the-air piano anthems and the odd quirky, smile-inducing interlude. It's the kind of album that will put a great big smile on your face, whatever your mood.

Review: Jazz-tinged soul is the order of the day as Positive Flow makes a much-welcomed return via Tokyo Dawn. Ranging from sultry street soul to percussive deep house, Flow Lines is a rich weave of vibes that suit floors and headphones alike. Highlights abound, but if only a nincompoop wouldn't stop by and check out the swaggering Amp Fiddler-esque "Hold On" (featuring Colonel Red) or indeed the more tender-toned piano-stroker "Do What I Do" (featuring Omar). And once you've checked those two tracks, we reckon you'll be sold on the rest. Organic soul vibes don't come much richer than this.
