Review: Glasgow's Shaka Loves You has rightly earned a reputation as disco-centric duo on the rise. Because of this, it's little surprise to see them at the controls on Bomb Strikes' first foray into the disco-focused compilation market. The Scottish pair have naturally pulled out all the stops for the occasion, selecting 20 hot-to-trot cuts that aptly blur the boundaries between disco, funk, nu-disco, electro and boogie. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, the hazy, sun-kissed soul of Lack of Afro's "Back To The Day", the thickset P-funk revivalism of Kraak & Smaak's "Dynamite" and the rubbery disco-house-meets-UK soul flex of the Reflex's remix of Omar's "Vicky's Tune". Throw in a tasty selection of the pair's productions and you have a suitably strong collection.

Review: Following the success of Shaka Loves You's previous compilations on Bombstrikes, the label has offered them the chance to launch a new series all of their own. Named in honour of their radio show and regular parties in Glasgow, Joints & Jams offers up a hugely entertaining (and largely floor-friendly) mixture of funk-fuelled hip-hop (Bastien Keb, Fort Knox Five, Andy Cooper), skanking reggae (The Nextmen and Gentlemen's Dub Club sing-along 'Done It Again'), flash-fried funk breaks (the Allergies), tropical goodness (DJ Nu-Mark's hook-up with Quantic), and various fusions of disco, boogie and funk (see the cuts from Kraak & Smaak, X-Ray Ted, Pablo & Shoey and Shaka Loves You themselves). Review: If we're counting correctly, then this is the 16th album from Will Holland in his Quantic/Quantic Soul Orchestra guise, so you probably have a pretty good idea what to expect by now! It would be hard to claim there's much new musical ground being trodden here, but fans certainly aren't going to be disappointed, as the Tru Thoughts veteran effortlessly switches between cinematic soundscapes ('Divergence'), Balearic psych pop ('Incendium', 'Is It Your Intention'), sultry heartbreak soul ('You Used To Love Me' feat Denitia, 'Now Or Never' feat Alice Russell), Afro-Latin funk ('Tierra Mama') and more besides. Two decades into his career, Holland shows no signs of slowing down or running out of ideas just yet!

Review: Inspired by the dark and contemplative nights of New York City-based William Holland's first long tour across the USA, "September Blues" is a luscious serving of jazzy electronica and neo-soul, full of stunning live instrumentation. He said the track that was played a lot in their live set, which began from an improvised jam session but was refined live on stage. The Selva Remix of "You Used To Love Me" (ft. Denitia) submerges the release into the New York nightlife, informed by the British producer's bi-monthly residency at New York club space Good Room. Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from the popular Too Slow To Disco series, namely glassy-eyed, pitched-down disco, boogie, yacht rock, blue-eyed soul and AOR with a distinctive soft-focus flex. Naturally, there's plenty to savour on the series fourth edition, much of it either obscure or previously overlooked. Our picks of a predictably strong collection include the horn-totin', much-sampled Pleasure classic 'Nothin' To It', the lusciously loved-up cosmic soul of Prime Time Band's 'Fall in Love in Outer Space', the eyes-closed, Rhodes-sporting AOR soul of 'Stay The Night' by the Farragher Brothers, the slow release swell of Alan Price's 'Groovy Times' and the sun-splashed jauntiness of Max Leake's 'Tell Me The Reasons'.

Review: On this eleventh instalment in the label's popular edits series, Too Slow To Disco serves up four more wide-eyed, loved-up reworks of tracks from the disco end of the yacht rock spectrum. First to don boat shoes and Ray-Bans is Ben Jamin, who expertly pitches down, subtly beefs up, deftly dubs out and cannily rearranges a France Joli gem from 1981, wisely making use of elements of both the vocal and instrumental versions. David Bay does a great job tampering with a Shalamar classic, opting to employ modern production trickery and some well-placed effects, before Saltywax delivers a thickset, mid-tempo disco-house style revision of a a string-laden epic. Finally, Mikeandtoss's 'Hold Us' is a fine tweak of an insatiably loved-up AOR disco treat.

Review: Germany's Replay bring us two more disco/boogie re-edits from label boss DJ Friction, AKA Frico. First to get the treatment is Phyllis Hyman, as Friction takes on her 1979 classic 'You Know How To Love Me' - in its day, one of surprisingly few tracks ever to acquire anthem status on disco and Northern Soul floors alike - before turning his attention to Black Ivory's even more iconic 'Mainline' from the same year (as later covered/sampled by Jason Load Experience, Love Revolution et al). It's a brave re-editor that decides to mess with two such well-loved tracks, so it's tribute to Frico's skills that he manages the task with considerable aplomb.

Review: Fran Deeper's Spa in Disco label is now 11 years old. To celebrate, the popular nu-disco imprint has unveiled this celebratory compilation. Andy Buchan gets things going in fine style via the mid-tempo nu-disco-meets-classic-house flex of 'House Party (Disco Version)', before Chewy Rubs drops some Soundstream-esque loopy disco-house ('Feel Good Factor') and Frank Virgilo takes a similar tack on 'Never Too Late'. From then on, it's a joyous sprint to the finish, with hands-aloft outings courtesy of Funk Hunk and others being joined by killer cuts courtesy of Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel (the rubbery bass guitar-propelled 'Funk Supreme'), Hiva & Funky Junkie (the hard-wired disco-funk of 'Hola') and Shakavoy (the party-starting 'Get Funky').

Review: More midtempo yet still eminently danceable grooves here from DJ Supermarket's Too Slow To Disco camp, this time coming courtesy of Italian-Australian producer Dave Mathmos. He turns his hand to re-editing two dancefloor classics from the 70s, with the lazy, laidback and Balearic 'Your Love (Contemporary Soul Mix)' biting the vocal from Ben E King's 1975 disco hit 'Supernatural Thing', while Rose Royce's 'Love Don't Live Here Any More' forms the basis of 'You Abandoned Me (Dave Mathmos Interpretation)', with a single line of the vocal looped up over house-y pianos and a slo-mo electro bassline.

Review: If we're counting correctly, this is the eighth album in the 'Too Slow To Disco' series overall, and the second 'Ladies Of...' volume, so you should have some idea what to expect by now! But for anyone who hasn't been introduced, slo-mo nuggets that are roughly contemporaneous with the disco era are the series' stock-in-trade, and they've unearthed some truly splendid nuggets here. See for instance 'Love The Way You Love Me', a surprisingly sensual groove from light entertainment stalwart Marti Caine that's absolutely dripping in funk - you'd swear that bassline was Imagination, for starters. There are one or two slightly over-schmaltzy moments but generally speaking these are late-night smoochers n' swayers of the highest order... soft focus, white wine and roses optional.

Amongst the many highlights you'll find the sparkling, synth-heavy '80s gospel soul of Calvin B Rhone, the soaring and celebratory brilliance of Harrison Jones & The Voices of Harmony, the low-down gospel disco-funk of the Johnson Family Gospel Singers and the Blaxploitation-era hustle of Paradise's "Keep The Fire". Also impressive is Steve Cobby's wonderfully swinging, floor-friendly tweak of Mr Jesse R McGuire's "Jesus Is On The Mainline".

Like its' predecessors, the 20-track set prioritises fun and frolics, blurring the boundaries between disco, electrofunk, nu-disco and house via a mixture of unreleased cuts, high-grade remixes, exclusives and familiar favourites. There's naturally tons to get the blood pumping throughout, with the many highlights including Opolopo's deliciously squelchy, sun-soaked and soulful take on Danny Kane and Princess Freesia's 'I Love The Way You Do', Yam Who's fantastic, early '80s disco style rework of Bazza Ranks and Venessa Jackson's 'Talk Is Cheap', the synth-heavy nu-disco perfection of Sammy Deuce's 'Give Me Love', and the low-slung, party-starting brilliance of Brothers In Arts' 'We Got The Funk', featuring the distinctive vocals of Freakpower's Ashley Slater.

Review: Rayko teams up once more with Elena Hikari to deliver the pair's second joint long-player, following on the heels of 2023's 'Tu Alma Y La Mia'. But while that first album was good, this one's exceptional! Cinematic, cosmic opener 'Too Much' sets the tone but it's the second track, 'Nunca James', that really hits you in the face: it's a slow-burning monster, with Hikari's haunting vocal earning it a place in the box marked "truly sublime". 'Looking To Edge' is another BIG track that probably needs to be heard on a 4am dancefloor to be truly appreciated; after that you get four more cuts that blur the lines between cosmic/Italo disco, Balearica, coldwave, house and pop (including a new version of 'Extraordinarylove' from the first album) before the title track, another deep, slo-mo chugger, plays us out in very fine style. Excellent work!
