The Tournament/Vader
The Tournament - (4:32) 128 BPM Hot
Vader - (4:47) 128 BPM
Review: Oh, yes! New Four40 garage binezz, and this time it's the new pair of Francois and Louis Benton to take us deep into the heart of the dancefloor. "The Tournament" flutters its swinging blockade of garage drums over a wobbling, bro-step sort of dubstep bassline that manages to create a rather stupendous hybrid banger; "Vader" takes a similar path to glory, except that the bass is even more in the mood to destroy all passers-by. Heavy gear!

Carnaval De Sao Vicente (Francois K., Joe Claussell Body & Soul vocal mix) - (10:29) 125 BPM
Sangue De Beirona (Francois K. & Eric Kupper Main Pass) - (8:26) 123 BPM Hot
Played by: Vincent Inc
Review: A treat for lovers of soulful Latin grooves here, as Cape Verdean marno legend Cesaria Evora gets the remix treatment from three of New York's finest, nearly eight years after her death (at the age of 70) in 2011. Francois K & Joe Claussell's Body & Soul Mix is up first and is dripping in world and jazz flavas, with Evora's Portuguese-language vocal sitting alongside gentle piano chords, mournful trumpet and fluttering, flute-like synths, all underpinned by rolling house beats. Francois K & Eric Kupper's Main Pass uses less of the organic instruments and rides a more tribal rhythm, making it the pick for dancefloor play in less specialist clubs.

PVNV - "Pace Chemistry" - (6:45) 128 BPM
Birth Of Frequency - "Child" - (6:18) 85 BPM
Review: Paris label Taapion delivers its fourth release, which captures the spirit of Paris' increasingly fertile techno scene. Featuring tracks by label owners Shlomo and PVNV, this instalment also welcomes Francois X. The Parisian artist drops the understated but effective "Dreaming Of The Tesseract", where lithe broken beats underpin bleak textures and ghostly howls, while Birth of Frequency impresses with his debut on the label, "Child", an understated, emotive slice of techno. So what of the artists behind Taapion? Shlomo's "Radioactive Sin" is an atmospheric, break beat led stepper, while PVNV shows that he is one of the French capital's most talented artists, dropping the spooky chords and pulsating groove of "Pace Chemistry", a near-perfect fusion of Detroit soul and European functionality.

Particules Elementaires - (2:57) 126 BPM
Review: One of the new wave of French artists, Francois X has put out some excellent house and techno for DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted label. Now he delivers a release for Dement3d and the results are as impressive. "Iterative Choir" is a dark, pulsing roller, full of nasty acid licks and a propulsive rhythm. "Elusive Morality" is even more intense, with the producer delivering tough, marching drums and a filter that churns away relentlessly. In contrast, "Espheni" is a tweaked acid jam that builds and builds, while "Particules Elementaires" sees him end the release on a different tact, with floaty ambient textures prevailing.

Review: Francois X rose to prominence with a string of excellent techno EPs for Dement3d and Deeply Rooted House, but as his debut album so eloquently demonstrates, this is just one side to his sound. To underline this point, Irregular Passion starts with the greyscale ambience and thunder clouds of "Love Of A Lifetime", followed by the broken beats and menacing mood of "Blurry Lust" and the abstract sound scape that is "Just A Dream". The French producer's dance floor influences are audible on the belching bass of "Slave, No Slave", but the absence of kick drums means that it remains a home listening experience. "Shamefaced" sees him keep the tempo low with an eerily atmospheric mood piece, but eventually he gives in to his dance floor instincts on the stepping "Falling for Her" and the stripped back, cavernous "Dirty Chat".

Hype - (4:33) 128 BPM
Played by: Mr Brainz
Review: This summer anthem has been bringing the hype across the dancefloor for the last few months... Rejoice! We can now get our mitts on this badboy. Brimming with the bouncing bassline energy that is so synonymous with their homeland the West Midlands, 'Hype' mixes a fun, classic 4/4 with dark, mutated metalic synths and old school spitting that Viper would be proud of.

Franco De Marano - "Biancaneve" - (4:28) 109 BPM
Review: Not one but five funky slices from fresh talents make up this new EP from Italian label Pizza Tunait. Jong Long's 'This Road' is a deep funk jam consisting primarily of live drums, warbling Hammond chords and a scratchy, sampled female vocal. There's more Hammond action on Girolamo Erilancho's 'Maybe', augmented by sonorous bass and reverb'd geetar, Francois Du Starper's melancholy, jazz-tinged 'Vignola 84' has a cinematic, soundtrack-y kinda feel, Gavin Saccoda's 'Come On' takes us into uplifting, brassy territory and finally Franco De Morano's 'Biancaneve' has airy flutes, raw slap bass and yes, more of those ker-razy Hammonds.

Francois Featuring Louis Benton & Mr Limey - "Menajatrois" (Bad Habit remix) - (5:01) 136 BPM
Review: It's trios all round as UKG producer Francois has recruited a pair of talents, Louis Benton and Mr Limey, to tackle this homage to the menage, "Menajatrois". DJ Q delivers a cool, sultry garage number that plays on the tune's serious raunch vibes. The original is excellent 4x4 UKF with extra wobble but its Bad Habit's Ayia Napa-slaying bouncing 2-step mix that's the real hit here. This one could even be a chart-botherer!

Review: The Occupants series is a split release project from Science Cult, the label that artists like Carl Finlow, Cygnus and Umek's Zeta Reticula project all call home. This first volume covers electro, but in the broadest sense. Thee J Johanz' "Woodpecker" is an acid-fried break beat track. At the other end of the spectrum, Aura Nox's "Mutiny On The Voyage To Azimut" sees the Science Cult artist voyage to the sound's outer limits. Remaining in that space is Blixaboy's dub-tinged "Bushido Initiative". St. Theodore presents a more ominous sound on "No Future", an arrangement that is led by a punishing sub-bass, and for a pure futuristic hit, it is hard to better the skeletal rhythms of Arsonist Recorder's "Heat Seek".

Review: As a label, Crucast have gone from strength to strength, rapidly establishing themselves as one of the premiere platforms for bass music in the UK. This complication marks that out perfectly with an astonishing selection of over 30 original creations, featuring high profile appearances from the likes of Jaguar Skills, Brent Kilner, Pavv, TC4, Inkline, Deadbeat UK and a tonne more. For us the EP highlights the strength in the current UK bass scene, with favourites being Bushbaby & Hadean's long-awaited collaboration release 'Clean Up', the monstrous swinging synths of Tengu's 'Weapon' and of course the wonky wonderings of SaidWho's 'Voices', a truly original compositional idea, focussing on rawcus bass sounds and scattered drum selections.

Review: For the latest volume in Planet E's long-running Detroit Love compilation, label boss Carl Craig has handed over to DJ Holographic (real name Ariel Corley), a rising star of the Motor City scene. It's a hugely entertaining collection told, with Corley doing her best to showcase artists on the up - from both Detroit and elsewhere - as well as established stars of the underground. Musically, it's as diverse and mixed-up as you'd expect, kicking off with revivalist Afrobeat (Underground System), slick deep house (Pontchartrain with Javontte) and revivalist '80s soul (Shri Schwartz), before taking in everything from broken house and nu-disco, to sci-fi techno, sleazy warehouse jams, sleazy acid, percussion-rich Latin house and much more besides.

Review: With Buzzin' Fly approaching the final curtain (the label's last release will drop in June 2013), boss man Ben Watt is in retrospective mood. He's decided to reissue all of the label's early material on a series of comprehensive digital anthologies. This bulging, 34-track collection - the second - focuses on 2005 and 2006. It's something of a time capsule, offering thrilling flashbacks to a time when it was still unusual to find deep house tracks dominating dancefloors (see Justin Martin's excellent remix of Watt's "Love Cat (Holding On)" and Ame's classic rework of Rodamaal's "Insomnia"). Along the way, there are forgotten highlights (a stirring John Tejada remix of Jimpster) and surprising collaborations (Estelle - remember her - hooking up with Ben Watt).

Review: Following news that Ben Watt no longer intends to put out new music on Buzzin' Fly, the compiling and re-releasing of some of the highlights from the label's back catalogue is timely. This third volume focuses on the high point of the label's output, the golden period from 2007 to 2008. The dominant sound here is trancey and melodic, with synth sweeps combined with sensuous strings and woodwind samples. Manoo & Francois A embody this approach on the windswept "Magnetic", where epic, acid-led hooks build over dubbed out drums, while Pedro Madeira's "Long Shadows" moves from lush strings into an epic break down. Despite this approach, there is still space for classic US house, as the dubby drums of Dennis Ferrer & Steve Martinez' version of Ben Watt's "Lone Cat (Holding On)" demonstrates.

Review: Glaswegian imprint Avoidant presents Planet Destroyed, a mammoth various artist compilation featuring the leading names in underground electro sounds. Counting legends and newcomers alike, this is the definitive dystopian fantasy soundtrack. Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann contributes the exclusive track 'Motorman' which has an industrial edge that's typical of his style, while local legends Slam team up with Autonomous on the brooding sci-fi beats of "Into The Light", Luz1e throws down some serious computer funk on "Draw The Line", No Static 's Ara-U delivers the wonky acid of "GUAGUA" and San Francisco's Amber Cox (Slumber) ventures into deeper territory on the emotive cybernetics of 'Borean'.

Review: Hot Casa are on hand to provide us with a look at the titular country's music in the form of "Ivory Coast Soul Edits". Essentially this is a compilation in which some of the best international DJs in the Afro soul and tropical funk scenes retweak a 'mind-bending collection of Ivorian grooves originally recorded in Abidjan back in the '70s. The result is an infectious fusing of vintage Afro grooves with solid modern production.
