Review: Originally released back in 2019, Semantica now gives The Beauty a timely reissue. It finds Oscar Mulero in impressive form. The album starts with the sparse "Act of Giving", a theme that continues with the title track's tribal drums and hypnotic synth loops and "Duties Strategies", a hypnotic, stepping track. "Permanent" sees Mulero up the tempo to deliver an intense, percussive workout, while both "Assigned Task" and "Delegation" head down the kind of tripped out psychedelic direction one would expect to hear from Mike Parker. Mulero's ability to craft a dance floor groove shine through - and this is no more so evident than on the lithe, steely "Determined Mission".

The Art Of Jazz - (5:03) 124 BPM
(Like) Magic - (5:19) 124 BPM
I Have To Leave - (5:07) 125 BPM Hot
Review: Oscar Barila has been serving up solid singles and EPs for the best part of 15 years. In the process, he's notched up releases on a wide range of labels including Plastic City, Nite Grooves, Moiss Music and Large Music. Here the Valencia-based producer brings his brand of peak-time ready club music to No Fuss for the first time. He's brought his A-game too, as title track 'The Art of Jazz' - a rolling, warming slab of deep house smothered in hazy electric piano riffs, twinkling solos and starry synth sounds - so emphatically proves. The fun continues elsewhere across the EP, where slap-bass propelled deep house stomper '(Like) Magic is followed by the tactile, immersive, spacey and string-drenched wonder that is 'I Have To Leave'.

Temudo - "Niiv" - (6:27) 135 BPM Hot
Kessell - "Time Domain" - (5:03) 133 BPM
Review: The latest release on Faut Section is a dynamic split EP. It opens with "Code Of Deception", a collaboration between label owner Lewis Fautzi and Norbak. Centred on a tough, stepping rhythm, it sees the duo factor in dubbed out percussion for maximum impact. Oscar Mulero's "Zw System" is more direct; it features a rolling, tribal groove, populated by a cacophony of frazzled percussion. Temudo's "Niiv" also makes use of metallic hi hats, but has a punchier feel, thanks to the use of dense kicks. "Time Domain" by Kessell pushes in an opposite direction: focused on a visceral bass and a stepping rhythm, it's a distinctive but functional affair.

Seleccion Natural Parte 6 EP
Oscar Mulero - "Reverberation" - (6:06) 134 BPM Hot
Exium - "No Sign Of Weakness" - (5:45) 130 BPM
Christian Wunsch - "Sleeper Cell" - (5:51) 128 BPM
Reeko - "Lynx" - (5:25) 129 BPM
Review: Spanish techno power clique Oscar Mulero, Reeko, Exium and Christian Wunsch load and fire part six of their Seleccion Natural series out of Mulero's Polegroup canon. The previous five blasts came from Reeko's Mental Disorder, Christian Wunsch's Tsunami Records and Mulero's native Warm Up Recordings. Reeko's "Lynx" is a hi-octane power-trip of scratchy industrialism and gunshot snares jacked with a ferocious pace, as is Mulero's "Reverberation" only to a more bleepy and streamlined effect, with obvious fidelity toward Surgeon, Regis and Jeff Mills. Had Wunsch's booming "Sleep Cell" not been released here, it could easily hold its own among the factory-made releases of Perc Trax. Exium proceed with break-beat drums in "No Sign Of Weakness" which aggressively lends itself to a trove of over-driven bass squelches, piston pushing white noise and a tribal ramshackle of percussion - cabalistic techno at it's most dangerous.

Rotar (Tensal Digital Bonus remix) - (6:36) 127 BPM
Review: Spanish techno veteran Oscar Mulero goes deeper than usual on Second Skin. The title track is underpinned by a typical Mulero stepping rhythm, but has he added feature of chords flowing and churning overhead. In a similar vein is "Rotar". Based on a straighter arrangement, firing percussion and a rumbling groove underpin synths that soar and swoop like autumn leaves in the wind. The mood changes for the darker with the remixes. Architectural's two versions of the title track are characterised by jagged percussion and intense acid burns, while Tensal's takes on "Rotar" are spring-loaded with churning filters and tough kicks.

Aire Silencioso (Digital Bonus Track) - (5:17) 136 BPM
Review: Mulero returns to his Polegroup label with a release that traverses the techno spectrum. "Flujo Fatal" is based on stripped back, stepping beats, which provide the veteran producer with a platform to conjure up a blanket of searing analogue textures. It's an intense, atmospheric piece. On "Nueva Y Oscura Era", Mulero's approach focuses on percussion; it sees him deliver a skeletal, rolling rhythm punctuated throughout by searing hi hats. In contrast, "Noches De Menta" is a straight pulsating workout that is reminiscent of Mike Parker's sub-tonal experiments. Mulero is to be lauded for keeping the listener guessing, and "Dos Esqueletos" is a wonderfully layered, dubbed out track.

The Structure EP

Exium - "Repeating Future" - (5:23) 130 BPM
Jose Pouj - "The Structure" - (6:14)
Review: Ranging from bone-crushing industrial rhythms to more serene tracks, The Structure is a diverse release, yet each contribution shares some characteristics. Oscar Mulero's "Sound Mirror" is built from dense drums and broken beats, but even at its most intense, with evil horn stabs seeking to conjure up the apocalypse, he allows some light in via deft filtering. Christian Wunsch's "Mutation" is a more straightforward techno track, albeit one that breaks down to the sound of eerie chords and haunting strings. Exium's "Repeating Future" appears to take inspiration from the spacey ambience of Pete Namlook before veering into a stop-start, understated rhythm, while Jose Pouj's "Structure" offers up panel-beating drums and wispy atmospherics.

Field Of stars EP

Strife II - "Summer In My Heart" (feat Oscar Michael) - (4:24) 166 BPM
Review: Newcomer to the scene Marshall Watson is no regular upstart. A highly-trained sound designer by day, he makes 'computer music' for some of the world's largest corporations. By night he decided that messing around with sonic textures for his own amusement wasn't enough any more and launched his own D&B project, and gorgeous it is too. Beautifully multi-layered and using the rich vocal talents of Arae Haller, side one is brilliantly shimmering with influences from trance through to liquid. Working with Oscar Michael and Strife II on side two for an ambient, live instrument-littered sound, his work is as fresh as it is uplifting.

Number Form - (5:44) 126 BPM
Review: With Tensal debuting over at Oscar Mulero's Pole it seems the Spanish techno legend has used this as an opportunity to send his music elsewhere too. Take a look at the list of artists that have contributed nihilistic abrasion to Bas Mooy's label and Mulero is a glaring omission. Mooy and Mulero (surely a collaboration to come) make up for this by agreeing to bear five Mulero productions under the MORD banner, kicked off by the big room acid of "Sensory Deprivation". "Misophonia" slams down hard like a Mulero production should with bleeps, distorted tones adding some gritty funk to a game Mike Dehnert thought he'd monopolised. Deepest section of the EP is "Spatial Sequenced Synthesia" and staying down low is the sub-aqueous strafing of "Common Frequencies". Mulero's formula is unbeatable right now, and for something a little stripped back with less reverb check "Number Form".

Eccentricity - (5:09) 127 BPM
Review: It would be fair to say that Oscar Mulero is a techno purist. Over the last 16 years, he's built a solid reputation via singles and albums that rarely stray from techno's hypnotic, heavyweight roots. Hyperbolic Paths, his first single for Token since 2008, continues on this path. Its' four cuts are built around bombastic, full-throttle rhythm tracks, unsettling chords and undeniably trippy, looped melody lines. The standout track is arguably "Suborbital Trajecteries", which combines spacey, rising and falling synthesizer motifs with beefed-up, tropical-influenced techno drums and sweaty, constantly building percussion fills. The deeper and dub influenced closing track, "Eccentricity", is also quietly impressive.

Review: Although he is mainly associated with his own Warm Up or Pole Group labels, Oscar Mulero started his relationship with Token back in 2008. Now a decade later, the Spanish techno powerhouse is issuing Electric Shades, a sci-fi obsessed release on the Belgian label. "Echo" resounds to eerie bleeps and a subtle groove, while at the more visceral end of the Mulero scale is the rough, doubled up rhythms of "The Voyage" and the searing, Millsian "Violet Dust". Clearly Mulero is on a journey on this release as the dense, heads down "Chasing Shadows" recalls his loopy past, while he shows a more refined, tunneling approach on "The Cycle" and "Out Of Sight".

Vikthor - "Set You Free" - (7:19) 131 BPM
Review: Monika Kruse deserves kudos for signing up this four-tracker from emerging producers Vikthor & Oscar Aguilera. Drawing on elements as seemingly disparate as 90s trance, Oliver Huntemann-style grainy club tracks and techno's deeper side, this dynamic new duo wrap all of these elements into rolling tribal grooves that are sure to work with a variety of DJs. In particular, the dubbed out "Still Dreams", which progresses seamlessly into dreamy break beats, is impressive. Meanwhile, at the other end of the intensity spectrum, "Set Your Free" - a solo effort from Vikthor - and the title track provide the kind of bass-led club techno that's intrinsically linked to Terminal M.

The Iberian DJ and producer has a strong end to 2019 with this EP, as well as a remix on Adam Beyer's Truesoul label. All tracks will appeal to both house and techno lovers alike with a peak time energy running through the whole release. From the epic and evocative drama of "Fearless" with its soaring headrush inducing synth leads, the punchy in-your-face tech house of "Inferno" optimised with sturdy dancefloor dynamics and the handy back room dub of "Redemption" providing a bass-driven tool for DJs to handle any situation.

Review: Spanish techno overlord Oscar L is the latest to be introduced to the Knee Deep In Sound label with this Anima single. Sending in two burning techno tracks that wind their way through a progression of sailing synths and filtered basslines, lead number "Anima" takes the high road through its peaking synths, techno beats and uplifting melody that build and explodes in dramatic trance-like fashion, whereas "Dimension" goes low with its club-centric groove, deeper atmospheres and searing leads notes.

Transversal (Sleeparchive remix) - (4:42) 125 BPM
Review: Continuing his foray into the pitiless world of pitch-black techno, Oscar Mulero brings the pressure on this latest EP for Developer's Modularz imprint, stepping up to the label's remit for forward-thinking industrial styles. "Rotula" falls slow and heavy, somehow achieving grace even as the unforgiving bottom end thuds out and the hats shudder with nervous energy. Truncate brings a remix that plies a more compacted trade in cyclical techno, less booming but more pointed than the original. On the flip, Mulero's "Transversal" does the damage with a scant list of ingredients, largely dominated by a stuttering square wave bass stab bringing the doom to great effect, while Sleeparchive reacts with a version that brings everything you could want from a Sleeparchive cut; a bleak soundscape devoid of human warmth with a central bleep the only source of light.

Perc Trax Vs Pole Group Part 2
Forward Strategy Group - "Rundoled" - (7:21) 124 BPM
Exium - "Raw Visions" - (5:23) 129 BPM
Oscar Mulero - "Blackstar" - (5:51) 128 BPM
Manni Dee - "Serenity" - (6:21) 126 BPM Hot
Review: Perc has clearly found a soulmate in Oscar Mulero, and here the duo present another collaboration between their two tough, heads-down techno imprints. Mulero's gnarled-but-futuristic "Blackstar" is arguably the best thing here. It's as hypnotic as you'd expect, but there's a whisper of melody and soul amongst the intensity. The same can be said about Manni Dee's "Serenity", which breaks up the beats a little to add a little more fluidity to an otherwise pulsating, metronomic techno groove. Those looking for more straightforward, no-holds bared after-hours techno should check Formula Strategy Group's "Rundoled", and the ricocheting atmospherics of Exium's "Raw Visions".

Review: Arguably one of Spain's most prolific techno talents, Oscar Mulero returns to the super label PoleGroup with the Electric Storm EP. The title track combines Mulero's trademark throb and reverb-heavy ambience with powerful drums, while "Cave" takes things in an even darker direction, with brittle percussion resonating against reverb-heavy ambience. The remixes aren't too shoddy either; Our Circula Sound boss Sigha delivers a remix of the title track with some prickly yet powerful synth blips, and Tommy Four Seven coats "Cave" with an industrial fuzz and into a broken techno nightmare which will destroy any dancefloor.

Hate Is Love - (6:41) 134 BPM
Cybersluts - (6:11) 137 BPM
Iron Curtain - (5:09) 132 BPM
Review: The Dynamic Reflection team deliver another storming release of pounding techno with "Hate is Love." This time it comes from none other than label boss, Paul Boex and his biggest influence, the ever active Oscar Mulero.

Recent releases for his own Warm Up Recordings label have seen Mulero kill dancefloors the world over.

Now, he comes to Paul Boex's imprint to open this release with a remix of the Dutchman's "Hate is Love." His version flies straight off the mark with a pounding beat and frantic, high pitched synth stabs. It effortlessly builds tension and drama as it progresses before a breakdown lures all the sound beneath a still driving 4/4 beat. Inevitably though, Mulero reinstates the noise, turning "Hate is Love" into a true, peak time smasher. I suppose we can expect nothing less from this man by now. Following the Spaniard?s remix is Paul Boex?s original. Still a thumping techno track, the original effort feels more reserved than the remix due to in no small part, a beautiful soundscape that lingers in the background throughout the entire tune. It gives the track an epic feel, taking you on a wonderful, dream-like journey of moods and atmospheres. Returning to some highly energised techno, Boex delivers the jacking "Cybersluts" next on the schedule. Synth jabs, FX, jaunting basslines and the customary driving beat make this a full body shaking, sub-human alien. "Iron Curtain" is even more alien, spacing wailing synths far out into the depths as high end percussion snaps in the foreground. A truly futuristic sound palette emerges on this techno wig out, proving that Boex can go blow for blow with his inspiration, Oscar Mulero.

In A Silent Way - (5:35) 130 BPM
Horses - (5:13) 133 BPM
Review: Spanish producer Oscar Mulero always brings an experimental edge to dancefloor techno, and Like A Wolf is no exception. "In A Silent Way" starts off life as a solid dubby rhythm, but gradually Mulero raises the intensity levels, turning it into a jarring industrial workout, but adding airy atmospheric textures to offset the austerity. "Horses" makes no such concessions, featuring noisy beats and a recoiling bassline from the outset, but "Like A Wolf" sees him revert to an unpredictable approach. Underpinning the evil acid licks are heavy break beats and the kind of eerie sound textures that wouldn't sound out of place on an Autechre album.

Gradiente De Voltaje - (5:30) 135 BPM
Review: PoleGroup celebrates the 60th milestone in its catalogue with a superb three-track release from label owner Oscar Mulero. The title track resounds to billowing, filtered chords and chain mail percussion, with these contrasting elements underpinned by a lean rhythm. "Espectro Rojo" is more visceral and sees the veteran Spanish producer draw on the extreme end of Jeff Mills' canon to craft a loopy, linear affair. Rounding out this dance floor-focused affair is "Gradiente De Voltaje". More understated than the other tracks on the EP, its menacing, snaking bass and rolling, steely drums will still have the required impact.

Review: Spanish techno stalwart Oscar Mulero trailed this fourth album in as many years with Dualistic Concept, a set of typically dark, hypnotic and ghostly remixes. That can be found on the second disc, and ties in neatly with the robust, forthright and atmospheric sound of the album itself. Muscle & Mind has moments of beauty, of course - see the blissful ambience of "Mental Causation" and enveloping chords and found sounds of "Unconscious" - but for the most part it's concerned with the power of rhythm. Few are better at wringing maximum intensity from loop-heavy jams, and Mulero's love of dusty white noise, trippy melodies and skittering percussion guarantees variety in the grooves throughout.

Theory - (6:36) 128 BPM Hot
Review: Truesoul rounds off 2021 with a fresh collaboration between label regular Oscar L and Weska. The title track is based on a stripped back rhythm, one that is powered by a menacing bass, ticking percussion and a cacophony of tones and textures. Once combined, these elements make for a fresh new variation on minimal techno. "Theory" is an uptempo track full of drama; at the outset, euphoric strings build and drop, before giving way to acid-laced chords that swell and soar. Realised against the backdrop of a pulsating groove, the fusion of these elements makes for a truly impactful track.

Barely a year from his last long-player, and Mulero arrives with Black Propaganda, his most impressive statement to date. Following the delicate, bit crushed ambience of "The Dirt", the album travels through a number of dark, minimalistic techno structures, from the cavernous echo of "Instant Widespread of the Dirt" (which sounds like what you'd imagine Villalobos and Mills would sound like together), through the hypnotic emissions of "Intentionally False" and the insistent pulse of "False Statement", before winding up with the title track, a crystalline piece of razor sharp sound design. Highly recommended.

Intentionally False (Shifted remix) - (7:37) 128 BPM Hot
Review: Oscar Mulero revisits last year's Black Propaganda with some help from some of contemporary techno's biggest names on this essential remix EP. "To Convince For The Untruth" sees Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Lucy take the original's cavernous surroundings and sharpen them up with bitcrushed hi-hats and subtly a rumbling noise floor, while Developer's take on "Disinformation" straightens out the original's breakbeat acid tendencies by soaking its furious synth lines in reverb and hooking everything together with a rolling 4/4 kick. Finally, Shifted's take on "Intentionally False" keeps the measured pace of the original but transplants its thick, bulging frame for a threadbare structure littered with subtle detail.

Review: This latest display from Hot Source is looking very exciting indeed as they welcome the combined sounds of Oscar Hill, Justin Black & Seb Valentine for a warm display of 4x4 originality across 10 dancefloor ready rollers, exploring everything between breaks and tech house. From the nostalgic chord progressions and explosive arpeggios of 'Still There', to the more moog-laiden bass leaps of 'Deep Vibe' and euphoria-inducing breaklines of 'Losing Control', the three soundsmiths really do cover a lot of ground across the project, giving us exactly what the release days on the tin, a collection of 'Rave Bangers'. Our highlights would have to include the funk induced vocal lines and big-room synthetics of 'Got2heal It', alongside the post-garage rhythms of 'Rain' and glittering harmonics of 'Thinking Bout U', all of which pack a unique but very potent punch!

Said I Know (original dub mix) - (5:45) 122 BPM
Review: New York veteran Oscar Poche is based in San Diego these days, and here he joins forces with another local househead, SoulOnbeat label boss Cris Herrera, to create a deep, soulful house jam that borrows the vocal from Moby's 'Another Woman'. Remixes from Tswex Malabola and Mshudu take us into Afro territory - lively and upbeat in Malabola's case, darker and more tribal in Mshudu's - while Five Foot Short strips things back and adds some fine, understated Hammond work. An eyes-down, 3am-friendly Original Dub and a more mellifluous, post-club Fred Everything Lazy Dub complete a quality package.

9west - "Hidden Energy" - (7:06) 127 BPM
Flavio Lodetti & Oscar Barila - "Odyssey" - (6:23) 124 BPM
Review: Musik Gewinnt Freunde offer a sneak peak at the international future of the label with four tracks from new acts that span the continents. Australian based French producer Yokoo is first up with "Spirituality", where a monologue on the spirituality of house music is submerged beneath simple pads and woozy key melodies that rise through the ether to dramatic effect. Warm abstractisms abound on "Cubic" where Georgian producer Tornike floods the ever present piano in snapping jazz-tinged snares as snatches of harmonious vocals and revolving chord progressions fight for attention. Greek duo 9West snaps you out of your daydream with the jungle techno pound of "Hidden Energy" which sees intermittent flourishes of dubbed keys, tribal chants and unidentifiable animal noises shoot out from beneath a relentless groove and grumbling bass. Finally Ocar Barila teams up with Flavio Lodetta for the cosmic greatness of "Odyssey" where punchy beats are overwhelmed by layers of Motor City atmospherics before re-emerging from the darkness.

Looking Back (Tornado Wallace remix) - (6:35) 119 BPM
Looking Back (Zanzibar Chanel remix) - (4:50) 118 BPM
Review: If you enjoyed Andras Fox and Oscar S Thorn's brilliant sophomore album, Cafe Romantica, this release should be essential listening. The EP's title track picks up where that set left off, with the duo once again conjuring a perfect balance between soulful synth-pop, lilting Balearica, and the kind of sumptuous deep house on which Larry Heard made his name. On the flip you'll find some fine remixes of album highlight "Looking Back". While Tornado Wallace's deep Balearic house take is rather wonderful, it's Zanzibar Channel's interpretation that stands out. Somehow, they've re-cast the deep and dreamy original as a madcap chunk of lo-fi P-funk.

Okapi (Fanfarrosar remix) - (8:00) 122 BPM
Shangelang - (6:55) 121 BPM
Review: It's all about subtlety and surprise on this release. Okapi starts with "Govinda Says", a deep, reflective affair full of dreamy pads and a spacey indistinct German vocal. Midway through, the arrangement moves into a mid-paced, minimal house groove. The title track features a similar construct; it starts with mournful hooks and broken beats, before disco samples and a shuffling rhythm ushers in change. "Shangelang" is more dance floor-based from the offset, with loose percussion and electronic chords prevailing. The remixes are also tailor-made for club use, with the Doubtingthomas Douche remix of "Govinda Says" focusing on a muffled vocal-led minimal workout and the Fanfarrosar take on 'Okapi' heading down a reverberating, stripped-back wormhole.

Review: Operating between Berlin and London, and on their own self-titled label, Energy Exchange Ensemble specialises in "organically engineered" house music, much of which is rooted in live instrumentation and improvised jam sessions. This excellent compilation rounds up their releases to date, flitting between percussion-rich, sun-splashed Latin house (Oscar Jerome collaboration 'Lime Green Skies'), starry ambient jazz ('Art Make Love'), languid soulful house ('Brighter Star' featuring Allysha Joy), jazz-funk flecked and deliciously fluid ultra-deepness ('On My Toes' with CC Dance Orchestra), slo-mo deep nu-disco with an Afro twist ('Obana (Zeitgeist 808 Remix)'), nu-jazz (the broken beat-influenced brilliance of 'East Moon') and tactile retro-futurism (the squelchy 'Smiling Down On Me', where Cody Currie and Allysha Joy both lend a hand).

Review: For the sixth instalment in Z Records impeccable "Under The Infliuence" series of crate-digging compilations, boss man Dave Lee (AKA Joey Negro) has turned to fellow London scene veterans Simon and Robin Lee, AKA Faze Action. Their selections are, as expected, superb, mixing their own edits of familiar favourites (Midway's ace "Set It Off" and Mikki's "Dance Lover" for starters) with material that's as obscure and over-looked as you'd expect. Standouts in the latter category include the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco of Bebe Manga, the thrillingly up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements", some superb South American disco from Don Lurio and Michele Claire's lesser-known version of disco favourite "In The Bush".

Review: Toolroom Live 01 is a behemoth. At 61 tracks large, inclusive of three continues DJ mixes, this new concept by Toolroom, as they say, is to highlight key artists, present new tracks, and give their fans a taste of the live experience. On here there's music from Harvey Mckay, Gary Beck and Maison Sky, to Bat For Lashes, Hot Since 82 and label owner Mark Knight, and if you're looking to grasp the Toolroom Live concept (and other oddities you might not expect), while getting some bang from your buck, this release is a well informed start.

Review: This is Mord's most ambitious venture to date, with a box set of seven records laying out the Dutch imprint's tough techno agenda. Regulars like UVB and Radial set the tone, with the former dropping brutish kicks and jarring riffs on "Someone Calling Cut" and Radial veering into a pumping direction on "Cru".Label owner Bas Mooy moves the compilation towards a more streamlined approach with the dense, linear Klockworks-like "Owl In Daylight", but Herdersmat also shows that the label has succeeded in attracting some heavyweight international talent; Eomac's "Phisk" is a disorienting rave-flecked stepper and Sleeparchive drops the bleep-heavy bomb that is "Evicted".

Diggler & Nadja Lind loading up the mandatory techno banger straight off the factory floor on "Einfach Zweifach" and Rain City Riot with the sensual vocal cut "Beautiful Lies" - among many many others.

For fans of the Spanish imprint's club techno there is no shortage of material to get excited about; the Lewis Fautzi remix of Exium's "Nucleoid" is a hypnotic groove par excellence, its confluence of acid and droning pulses arcing to a tantalising climax, while Christian Wunsch and Exium once again represent the tough industrial and dub-meets-noise sound of the label on "Emission Lines" and "Biolag" respectively. However, there is also a more musical, reflective side to Poelgroup's sound. In this regard, 5 Years delivers most impressively with the chilling strings of the Architectural project from Reeko as well as the Spanish producer's cinematic, break beat-led reshape of Jonas Kopp's "M31".

JKriv - "The Queen On Her Throne" - (8:06) 110 BPM
Oscar Sulley & The Uhuru Dance Band - "Bukom Mashie" (JKriv's King Mashie edit) - (8:03) 124 BPM Hot
JKriv - "Queen's Beats" - (4:31) 110 BPM
Review: The kind of names and quality of releases that Brooklyn's Razor N Tape has supported puts them in the disco premier league. Here they enlist Jkriv to provide us with dancing fodder that isn't throwaway stuff. First is his rework of "Bukom Mashie" by Oscar Sulley & The Uhuru Dance Band. The latter, his "King Mashie edit", is a raucous slice of bassy and brassy percussive Afrobeat. Elsewhere an O'Jays classic gets stretched out into eight minutes of slow bump bliss on "The Queen On Her Throne" and resurfaces in a deliciously spare dub called "The Queens Beats". Top notch!

Review: We're only in August, but on the Orbit compilation, Tronic takes stock of the biggest tracks of the year so far. There's label owner Christian Smith's "The Future Is Ours", an infectious techno roller that unfolds to the sound of pulsating bass and a celebratory vocal sample, while on a deeper tip, Anna Reusch delivers the hypnotic tech-house of "Loose Your Mind". While the compilation features clubby contributions from label regulars like Drunken Kong, there are also some surprises where Tronic ventures into previously uncharted territories, such as Ian O'Donovan's symphonic "Rath Of The Synods" and Hannes Bieger's tripped out remix of Biz' "Psychotropic".

Review: Tronic launches the ninth instalment of its Rockets series, which brings together new and established producers. First up is Oscar L, a veteran of the techno scene, with the rolling "Mesmerised", which breaks into buzzing bass drops and which features a series of snare roll crescendos. On a different tact Kamara, who has released on Tronic before, drops the pulsating acid of "Le Labyrinthe Enchant?", while the label has also enlisted the services of UK techno veteran Daryl Stay for the grimy bass and rolling groove of "Closure". Representing the new breed this time, there's Simina Grigoriu, with the forceful, acid-laced techno of "Brutally Honest" and The Reason Y and T?mas Sinn's tripped out minimal sound on "Illusions".

Review: Soul Deep are firing serious shots this year. Proffering a consistent slew of beats with a quality control as high as their release rate, the label's ability to identify new talent and support it is unlike any other this year. Here are another 11 examples; the emotive piano work of Philadelphia's CitySkape, the earthy soul of Oscar Maya and floaty, Bcee-style rolls of Greenspoon are but three of many highlights. Another future-proofed document that supports the next generation.

Review: Token celebrates ten years in business with this excellent compilation. Unlike some imprints that use a significant milestone to simply churn out existing material, Kr!z label has taken an unusual approach by getting the label's regular contributors to collaborate with its DJ supporters. This leads to the dense broken beat of "Bloom", a track authored by Sigha and Rodhad, while on "Detonation Vertex", the Dystopian boss teams up with one of Token's core artists, O [Phase], for a tight, pulsating techno groove. O [Phase] also works with Antigone, the French producer, who is one of the label's most recent additions, for the peak time, steely rhythm of "Icosahedron Flood". Of course, the compilation also features Token's boss, with Kr!z dropping the melodic, spiky breaks of "Amalgam" with Inigo Kennedy and the detuned banger, "Comets", with CTRLS. Here's to another 10 years.

Review: With releases this year coming from Athea, Huxley and Hot Since 82, Knee Deep In Sound has been a go to portal for contemporary house and techno-isms. This compilation lifts highlights from the label's 2019 catalogue and pool of artists with label owner Hot Since 82 leading the way with "You Are The Light". Contributing deeper trance elements and bouncing basslines is "Tilted" also, while other ndeniable house, dub techno and vocal numbers come from Maxinne, Miane and Freddie Frampton. And with 2020 still not here yet, Huxley too delivers a delectable percussive number in "Evolution".

Review: It may not be the most fashionable label, but there's no doubt that Perc Trax has been instrumental in championing some truly uncompromising music over the past decade. Here, owner Ali Wells continues on his mission to ignore trends with a typically abrasive selection. Truss' "Brockweir" is a hard and heavy techno banger with a grungy bass and jagged, screeching riffs blaring in constantly while Sawf's "Goves" sounds like a broken beat variant on this approach. Perc's own "Forever Your Girl" and "Dumpster" see him mine the 90s to deliver rave-sampling, stab-heavy tools - in particular, "Forever Your Girl" sounds like it sampled T99's "Anasthasia" - while Spanish imports Oscar Mulero and Exium provide the compilation with some fractured rhythmic finesse.

Review: Oscar Mulero's Pole Group closes out the year with a collection from some of techno's most respected producers. While the overall tone on Unknown Landscapes is dark and at times unsettling, it never strays into the plodding furrowed-brow seriousness that often besets contemporary techno. DVS1's "Strobe" sees the US DJ deliver churning chords over a grinding, metallic rhythm, while Reeko's "Enlightenment Process" shifts from pounding broken beats into a spacey, filtered segue. That's not to suggest that the label or its owner have gone soft either; the squelchy acid and stinging riffs of Jonas Kopp's "M31" is as intense as it gets, but at the same time, contributions from Adam X and Forward Strategy Group tingle and pulse in a dubby, fuzzy afterglow.

Review: Oscar Mulero's label consistently puts out forward thinking techno - and this compilation is no exception. It may start with a surprise for some fans of the Spanish producer's broken beat sounds, with Reeko's "Miracle" delivering ghostly synths over a snaking bass line and Exium's "Mantra" featuring the kind of warbling trance melodies that one would associate with deep Detroit techno. Mulero's own "Tidal Acceleration" heralds a shift back towards more typical sounds as distorted, mangled drums support cold bleeps and a stepping rhythm, while Rolando drops a firing, percussive take on Exium's "Complex". Still, there is enough room for diversity as the skewed metallic rhythms and broken beats of Christian Wunsch's "Complete Surrender" demonstrate.

Review: Oscar Mulero's Polegroup label closes the year with a mammoth compilation that defines the current state of the techno nation. As Unknown Landscapes shows, it is a diverse place. There's droning ambience from Daphne RXX, while Reeko, Reggy Van Oers and Mike Parker deliver bleep-heavy, hypnotic groove that draw on the influence of F.U.S.E and Sandwell District. Heads-down loopy fare is also catered for - with the spiky percussion and bleak filters of Jonas Koop's "Fu Factor" standing out - and the form also revisits the rough, analogue sound of the 90s thanks to Karl Bult and American scene veteran DJ Hyperactive's contributions.

Review: Let There Be House & In It Together Records are proud to announce their huge label collaboration, in the form of this massive 60 track compilation containing 30 album only exclusives. 'The Anthology 2020' is a result of both labels having huge success over the past 12 months, with highlights coming from: Born2Groove with the low slung disco goodness of "Happiness", legend Sandy Rivera (with Aruhtra) on the bittersweet and soulful anthem "Love Somebody Else", the return of '90s funky house's glory days on "Piano Groove" by Makree (Sebb Junior Remix) and label chief In It Together's electrifying "Hey Mr DJ" (with Alimish). This essential album comes complete with four continuous bonus mixes by the boss men: two by Glen Horsborough (LTBH) and another couple by Jas P (IITR).
