Review: Whenever the Nomine Sound wagon pulls into town, we know that there is enjoyment afoot, a theory that is once again proved accurate with this latest two-tracker, welcoming the combined fever or Dust & Katja inside for two absolute stormbreakers. First up, 'Hold Tight', a percussively-unique soundscape of scuttling drum patterns and bone-chilling vocal work, delivering a mind-bending soundscape which constantly has you wondering which way you will turn next. On the flip side to this, 'Too Much' allows us to explore more of those blissful vocal lines, but this time in a slightly busier backdrop, as shuffling shakers and intense hi-hat lines lead the rhythm for a much more alternative flipside. The jazzy tones and eerie harmonies of this project are a thing of real beauty.
Review: The Whiskey Disco Small Batch series is custom made for sunny weather, water sports and festivals. The Baltic Beaches EP pairs the mastercraft of Moscow's Beard In Dust and Poland's Karol Alexander for three songs to soundtrack your Summer time. Each smacks of sublime breaks and Balearic keys. The deep slo-mo groove of "So Lonely" featuring those 808 State style bird calls, the '70s NYC soul jam that is "Jesienny Pan" and of course the lo-slung and dubby "Przyslowia" which is perfect to get stoned into the groove: we actually dug this one the most! Enjoy responsibly.
Review: Since Leonid Lipelis's last Beard in Dust outing on Bahnsteig 23 was one of the best things the label has released to date, we're expecting big things from this belated return. This time round, there's a far more Balearic feel to proceedings, though the Moscow-based source material remains deliciously obscure and virtually unknown. He hits the ground running via the brilliant dub/electro/jazz-funk fusion of TB-303-sporting roller More Acid, before making high with attractive synthesizer solos and bubbly arpeggio bass on the Holiday 85 style quirkiness of Pulsation. Next up is the high-octane lo-fi drum machine hits, cheap synthesizer riffs and dreamy backing vocals of Back Again and finally the pages from Ceefax go Balearic flex of Flowers.
Review: Since launching in 2015, Leeds-based Passport to Paradise has fast become one of the most interesting re-edit labels around, primarily be presenting superb rearrangements of thoroughly obscure and little-known cuts. Nemas Problemas Volume 2 continues this trend, serving up superb scalpel works from a quartet of rising talents. The Keeper kicks things off via the sprightly warmth and synth-heavy swing of quirky Italo-disco throb-job "Bear Claw", before Kool DJ Dust sprints off into over-the-top disco pastures on the swirling "Return of Koolius". Flip to the virtual flipside for the Clav-happy eccentricity of the impossible-to-describe madness of Rasta Nils' "Babla Rappinghood" and "Body Down" by Rizzolo DJ, a delay-laden slo-mo shuffle through Balearic electro pastures that could well be the EP's standout moment.
Review: Run Dust is a project from Luke Calzonetti, an American artist who is a member of the noise band Child Abuse. Given his background, it's no surprise that In Paradisum describes Supermarche as its most 'macabre' yet. Certainly, there are traces of Calzonetti's noise background throughout, from the screeching vocals and distorted broken beats of "Todd Rundgren's LSD" through the dense tapestry of malfunctioning computer noises that comprises "The Bath" and the sprawling feed back textures of "Dull Conversation". There are other, more atmospheric moments on Supermarche, like the textured soundscape on "Intro" and the lovely chiming bells of " Sincere Crime", but in the main, this is all about bringing the noise.
