Review: Having reached its seventeenth volume, the Total series is making its transition from adolescence into adulthood, but it has lost none of its youthful charms. Like previous editions, it features highlights from the German label's recent releases - including anthems from Laurent Garnier and The Orb - alongside some new gems. The latter category sees Thomas/Mayer deliver the tripped out, acid playfulness of "25", while Kompakt regular Superpitcher chimes in with the angelic vocals and skipping groove of "In My Head". Speaking of otherworldly moments, Jurgen Paape's "Always Disko" is a spaced out disco track from another dimension. Trends and fads come and go, but Kompakt will forever remain a constant, defined by its Total series.

Review: Liquicity is Maduk's Netherlands-based liquid leviathan, a platform which celebrates music that puts your arms in the hair and a smile on your face. It's all about the happy vibes and the warm sounds. Their latest VA EP is, accordingly, in that vein and it's a corker, with 8 tracks of sumptuous liquid from the likes of Makoto, Telomic and Polygon, all of which are remixes. The best is Telomic's reinvention of Pola & Bryson's 'Whisper To Me' featuring Sammie Bella, which has a delightfully crisp percussive underpinning and an equally joyous bassline, all of which sit just beneath Sammie's idyllic vocals. These gathered together deep, groovy and downtempo cuts that made an excellent musical accompaniment to your working day. Irma's latest collection, "Work With Balearic Music", takes a similar approach. Wisely, the storied label group has dipped into their archive of original Balearic-era Italian productions, offering up dream house classics and rarities from the likes of Keys & Tronics Ensemble, Montego Bay, Belladonna, Don Carlos, Notenshun and Soft House Company. Throw in some jazzy downtempo grooves and a handful of recent productions and you have an expansive, on-point set rich in classic cuts.

Where previous installments in the 'Freestyle 4 Funk' series have largely ploughed a party-hearty, faithfully 70s-sounding funk furrow, Volume 8 operates in slightly more leftfield/eclectic territory, taking in everything from space age jazz-funk (Afternoons In Stereo's 'City Of The Future') and looping lo-fi Balearica (Teddy Presberg's 'Passion') to conscious female-vocalled dancehall (Timewarp Inc's 'Restart') and out-and-out jazz-fusion (Ivan Blanusa's aptly titled, uber-mellow 'Sunday Chill').
