Review: Sl8r continues to don the hell out of vibes game with this killer new collection on V. Four tracks, four reminders that dnb is in safe hands despite the major commercial activity vulturing the culture right now. From the Moving Fusion style bassline treacle of 'Losing Streak' to the final closing harmonies of MC-du-jour Freddy V on 'Switching It Up', there's no fat whatsoever on here, just pure lean full-contrast drum & bass. In between we have the political grunt and thrust on the title track and plenty of hypey tension on 'Cause For Alarm'. Justice for all!

Review: Sl8r continues to dent the game from every angle with his debut EP on Chronic. Four tracks deep, it's an invasive trip into Roller County with all the jazzy touches, latent funk and warmth and grainy grit you'd expect from Bryan Gee's long-standing imprint. "Ruff Neck Cru" takes the lead (with RMS on side) as juicy subs ooze out of the speakers and drip all over the skippy breaks. Elsewhere "Astute" takes us on a rising escape above the cloud before the drop plunges us back down into earth so hard we'll be lucky to see next Christmas. "Immune" leaves all diplomacy at the door too thanks to its savage sandpaper funk bassline while "Alumni" closes the show on a proper creeper vibe. Think Need For Mirrors but with elements of Zapp & Rodgers and shed loads of bongos. Sci fi sleaze!

Review: Ignoring the Lord's Prayer every gosh-darned day, Sl8r leads us directly into 'Temptation' and we wouldn't have it any other way. The title feeds us to the brim with our daily bread thanks to its classic space jazz Headzy feels while 'Hasbulla' delivers us from evil with its scorchio high voltage reese and perfectly rattled snare. Elsewhere the deep subby bubbles of 'System' forgive us our trespasses while the sweet and soulful vibes of Sl8r and Patch Edison's 'It's Amazing' forgive those who trespass against us. Review: Food Music revisit the 1991 rave anthem "DJs Take Control" by SL2 - aka legend DJ Slipmatt and John 'Lime' Fernandez with rap vocalist Jay-J.They also provide some killer remixes by some contemporary heavyweights in support. The Slipmatt & Sooney 2018 extended remix still sounds as evocative and potent as it did 27 years ago: with its Kevin Saunderson style chord progressions, tough breaks and cut 'n' paste sampling - a true zeitgeist of UK dance music's emergent hardcore rave sound. Label boss Shadow Child had his work cut out for him when attempting to rework such a classic, but delivered a dynamic and respectful version. Not to mention man of the moment DJ Boring, whose extended remix goes all the way back to the same era for a fierce junglist steppa.

"No Fuss" lights the fire molten skitterish drums and a sinewy high voltage bass texture while "This Way Up" follows a similar rhythmic route but with added dramatic growls. Review: SL8R aka Connor is one of Manchester's fastest rising 170 talents, a man with an eye for not funny posts on Facebook but also some seriously serious beats. Previously residing over on the darker, more neuro influenced side of the spectrum, he's recently been showing off a penchant for diversity and this single on V sub-label Chronic is a perfect exemplification of that. 'Digbeth Warehouse' is a classic set of Manny vibes and Manny attitudes, a no-nonsense roller that wobbles more than a groom on his wedding day and a track which seems certain to get heads nodding up and down the nation. The flip is of a similar yet slightly more restrained nature and, whilst unlikely to get pulses racing quite as fast, compliments the A-side well and shows off the evolution of SL8R's production prowess. Review: Sl8R is the Mancunian on a mission, as he continues his upwards march through the V Recordings camp, with Bryan Gee possibly his main benefactor over the last few years. He's back on Chronic with two more rollers and they're just a certain quality to these that stands out, it's subtle yet wicked, and there's no pretension here; just good vibes. 'Mimosa' mimics the smoothness of its drinkable counterpart, as tumbling synth riffs move in and out to create a flowing, well rounded piece of drum & bass. The flip is more barebones, with wickedly layered percussion and a bigger, more angsty sense of attitude.

Review: There's something pleasingly calming about this EP from Philpot regular turned Uncanny Valley contributor Sebastian Lohse. While the EP's most impressive moment is arguably the sparse but deliciously melodic "Malstroem" - think starburst electronics, woozy chords and tactile analogue grooves - for the most part Atlantic Ocean is a warm and immersive affair. There's something suitably glassy-eyed about the near Balearic chords and breezy melodies of "Atlantic Ocean Road", while "FM For Life" pairs jaunty, Detroit-influenced bass and rolling rhythms with picturesque melodies. As for the guitar-flecked "Trocadero", you'd be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful deep house track this year.

Review: Having previously impressed with a string of "jam house" 12"s on Philpot, Stuttgart producer Sebastian Lohse pops up on the ever-reliable Uncanny Valley with his first EP since 2009. It's a fascinating listen, offering a skewed take on house that's hard to accurately define. The epic "Desert Flight" is a fidgety, maudlin vision, all uncomfortable Chicago house rhythms, woozy atmospherics, odd bleeps and curious vocal samples. It's rather good, even if it does sound like house music beamed down from another dimension. "Amorphed Limits" sounds like early Orbital or Meat Beat Manifesto making jazz-influenced deep house, while "Beercase Song" is as loose and organic a concoction as you're likely to find on a house 12" - all simple organs, snappy jazz percussion and unlikely vocal samples.

Review: An enjoyable class of associated names and potential aliases make their way to the Dresden labels wholesome 50th release and brings with it a first sign of music from Break SL since 2014! Known for releases on Philpot before his time at UV, he delivers an uplifting number of pulsating arpeggios and ballroom synths. Credit 00 is on point as always throwing down a Detroit inspired number of laser synths, starry atmospheres and subby, acidic basslines. Qnete, still reeling from his 2018 LP on 777 Recordings, supplies a tripier, deep and subtle house number via "In Transit" while the still unknown Gnista and AGB serve up some traditional Deutsch EBM and dark electro between them both.

The clue is in the name, really, and they're proving it again with this huge compilation of 40 huge jungle anthems from some of the best rising stars of the breaksy side of the scene. Review: V Recordings sublabel Chronic has developed a reputation for putting out beats that are even more venomous than its big sister, and their long-standing rollers series is getting a beef up with the fourth instalment. Featuring a litany of acts from a range of eras and a diversity of styles, Chronic Rollers Vol. 4 is a perfect addition to the arsenal of any DJ. 'Blindspot' from Nectax blends a soulful sample with an oscillating warp of juddering bass energy; Mancunian upstart SL8R gets subby and rolling with 'Roundabout'; and Brazilian label long-timers Alibi roll things out tidily on 'Sentinel'. Banging.

Review: This compilation arrives with a rich heritage of V Recordings compilations behind it, and Planet V has for a number of years been the flagship series for Bryan Gee's label. Edition four comes to a whopping 73 tracks and includes a mix as well, and all the familiar V faces are present, from Alibi to Paul t & Edward Oberon. All of the tunes have already seen the light of day in a previous form, and Disrupta and Duskee's 'Deep Thoughts' is one of the standouts, as Disrupta lays down a minimal yet funky beat for Duskee to rap lyrical over, something he does with serious presence. New gun SL8r makes several appearances, including on the excellent 'What U Need', which bounces along in a synthscape of serious depth and texture, its funky nodes nodding to the beat of a vintage blend. Crossover outfit Think Tonk also shine with 'Tom & Heavy', an offering unique in its stepping, breaksy percussion and one which oozes soulful class. There are dozens more to have a gander at, so take your pick.

Review: The man, the myth, the monster... Kumarachi returns to one of his strongest stomping grounds Deep In The Jungle for a furious four piece of amen addled action. "Sound Boi" sets the hair raising tone and pace before we're treated to a whole cavalcade of collabs.... Newcomer Veak joins the fray for two stinking space gazing work outs while the similarly unavoidable Sl8r brings the badness on the finale "Freeze" where low slung subs worm, wriggle and melt beneath evocative rave pads and head turning pitched drums. Phenomenal scenes as always.

Review: This is an album for any discerning D&B head who has been locked in to the sounds of D&B this year. Featuring the likes of SL8r, Kumarachi, DJ Hybrid, Bou and Stompz, this big LP touches right onto the pulse of where the D&B scene is at the minute: long basslines, raucous atmospherics and downright dirty vibes. Bou provides that from the very start with his remix of 'Raised In The Jungle' by DJ Hybrid and MC Haribo, a full-throttled run through the Mancunian space in the Bou fashion that we all already know and love. 'Liberation' by RMS is another highlight, slightly more stripped back than some of the other offerings but still with plenty of force to go around. This is a fat release.

Review: Not to be confused with the Julia Roberts classic, the Sound of Nuusic isn't a Bavarian epic but instead a UK underground epic of compilation sized proportions, with a whole raft of underground talents offering up a diverse concoction of jungle flavours. With Conrad Subs making several appearances, his stand-out contribution is 'Leave Dem', with a funked-up loping introduction that's seriously smooth but which quickly devolves into a stuttering balance of breaks and reece bass action. There's wicked jungle contributions from Kumarachi and RMS as well as Sheffield upstart Charla Green, whose knock-down breaks carry some serious weight. This is a must-listen for anyone who likes their jungle music.

Review: To cap off their three-part anniversary celebrations, Nuusic are laying down the heat on instalment number three. Teej has been one of the main players throughout this series, and with 'War Cry', a minimal roller with the guts of a lion and the roar of one too, as finger-clicking drums bear the weight of something much heavier, a snarling bassline that moves in devilish twists and turns. The vibes are also seriously real on J Select's cut, a spacious number that moves in gruff fits and starts, a barking cut with a catchy sample that smacks of proper rave memories. There's luscious depth on 'Always Be Mine', Speaker Louis and Epicentre finish off the series with the stuttering breaks of 'Unity'. What an LP series and congrats to the crew on three years.

Review: Digital Terror have had a sick last twelve months and this VA shows off some of their best cuts from the year, featuring acts like Jayline, Dutta, SL8r and more. Those latter two collab in serious style on 'The Pain', which cuts down into the range with fire and fury, angled sharp basses knifing through the frequencies with the grace and decorum of an elephant in heat. Jack The Ripper lands with supreme heaviness on 'Direction Course', Spaow brings the old-school vibes on 'Gallopo' and the collaboration of the album comes from the dream team of Jayline, Bou, Dutta and MC Dino who land with aplomb on 'Pico Skank'. Seminal.

Review: Currently ramping up the vibes on his Informal imprint, Dutta takes time to serve up a slice of cake or four on Digital Terror and it's a bass banquet that's every bit as scrumptious as you'd expect from a man who officially wants to marry BBQ pizza bases. Expect ruffage of every flavour: the spicy ("The Pain" with Sl8r), the glutinous ("Painkillers"), the meaty ("LA Kush Cake") and the sweet ("1608") All best served with some type of fizzy beverage, Dutta's cooking up bare feasts right about now.

On part one of the four part series here, we've got the fierce breakbeat science of Sl8r & Somebody Else's "Facking Jungle M8", the minimal steppa "Run Dat" by Erbman in the vein of classic DJ Krust, as well as the emotive mentasms on darkside roller "Full Circle" by Dom Hz and the subterranean neurofunk of "Eski B's "Tsunami".

Review: To celebrate notching up 50 releases, Uncanny Valley offered up a septet of colour-coded EPs featuring never-heard-before cuts from its growing roster of artists. With that campaign finished, they've now collected together all of those tracks on one suitably epic compilation, All Colors Are Beautiful. It's a pleasingly positive, life-affirming and kaleidoscopic collection all told, with the likes of Lauer, Jules Etienne, Johannes Albert, Cuthead and Basic Soul Unit taking it in turns to deliver cheery, synth-heavy cuts that variously join the dots between deep house, nu-disco, synth-pop, proto-house, jacking acid, crunchy electro, Motor City techno, ghetto-tech and glassy-eyed late-night sleaze. The results are uniformly excellent, making this one of the most essential compilations of 2020.

Review: As the pleasingly matter-or-fact title makes clear, this compilation gathers together 15 of the standout tracks released by Dresden label Uncanny Valley in 2019. As you'd expect, it offers a tastily off-kilter collection of cuts that variously mix and match elements of deep house, cheery nu-disco, dub disco, acid-fired early morning anthems, saucer-eyed hardcore rave revivalism, superior tech-house and throbbing electro-disco, with the contributions from Credit OO, Jules Etienne, Perel, The Golden Filter, Jor-El and Break SL standing out. That said, all 15 tracks are superb and firmly focused on the dancefloor. In a word: essential.

Review: Idyllik Records is a new underground music label based in Chicago, with a focus on 'finding and uplifting raw talent in underrepresented groups within the electronic dance music industry.' On the label's new various artists sampler titled Quasar 001, it covers genres from house to techno and anything in between. Highlights include: Anuman with some evocative progressive house flavour on "Shadow Proves The Sunshine", A - Jay (SL) taking you deep into the aether on the slow burning trance epic "Trapped Inside The Reality", while Kyotto steps it up into the peak time slot with the slinky and hypnotic stomper "Aurora" and Paul Svenson ends proceedings by placing you into freefall on the ethereal mood music of "Hell In Paradise".
