Review: DJ Ionik's Kojak Giant Sounds label has steadily built up a reputation as one of the finest re-edit imprints around, thanks largely to his uncanny knack of pickling only the finest reworks from his global network of collaborators. These edits from Rayko - first released on wax back in 2012 - are a good example. The Spanish producer has released umpteen edits over the years, but few have been quite as good as the two on offer here. There's some brilliantly Balearic Italian pop on the virtual flip (the baggy, loose and White Isle-friendly "Splendida Giornata"), but the real killer is "Strange & Funny" - a surging, dancefloor-friendly electrofunk-meets-house remix of a Womack and Womack tune full of heavy synth bass, filtered vocal drops and dreamy electronic melodies.

Review: Manchester label Coral City is a brand new affair that launches with a standout first EP. It comes from N&W who have been on a long hiatus but show they have lost none of their skill in the meantime. Their vintage analogue sound is pure and joyful, with nods to old school Italo as well as classic French touch. The rugged beats do their thing below majestic synth work that is sweet, crystalline and catchy. The cosmic chord progressions on each track help take you higher and on this booty shaking evidence, this is sure to be a label to watch.

Review: The pairing of Sammy W & Tobus first came to label boss Jamie Jones' attention back in 2011. Their fresh approach to DJ sets has garnered support from some of the scene's top DJs, and their their seamless blend of tech-house, funk and hip-hop has been released music on 8bit, Repopulate Mars and Brock Wild, as well as running their own labels Tobus X and Tobus Limited. Following on from last year's Bump It EP, the pair join forces once again on the Acid Terrace EP. Kicking off with the dirty, tough rolling funk of the title track with its jacked vocals, followed up by the rough and ready/Todd Terry influenced old school flavour of "Shake It" plus the druggy minimal shuffle of Jam Tight".

Review: Prolific French producer DJ W!ild makes his debut on 20:20 Vision. The only real surprise here is that it took him so long to put something out on Ralph Lawson's label. Indeed, as Feel Me demonstrates, W!ld sounds at home on 20:20. "Rendez Vous Love" is a dense, tribal roller with tripped out synths and vocals phased in and out at will. By contrast, "Boys Don't Cry" is stripped back and acidic, like fellow Frenchman Phil Weeks on a bad trip. The title track reveals a different side to his sound; littered with Spanish vocals and icy synths, its stepping, jagged rhythm marks a welcome sea change for a producer known for his functional dance floor sound.

Review: France's DJ W!ld has been concentrating on his DJ career over the last few years but the Parisian house staple is no stranger to the mixing room and, as per usual, he comes through utterly correct on Phil Weeks' Robsoul label (going strong since 2000). The All About You EP is classic W!ld ding what he does best. "Beakin'" takes hard-hitting drums and places them over minimal chords and melodies, "With You" is driving and like a steel pulse running through the dancefloor with its stabs of percussion, while "Only What I Am" is funkier and more kreaky thanks to its hypnotic samples and luscious chords. "All About You" is deeper, more lo-fi and yet filled with Wild's inimitable flair and charisma. It blows away most tech-house imitators, top stuff!

Review: Given the volume of records he's released over recent years, it would be fair to call DJ Wild prolific. Here, he returns to Robsoul Recordings with four more chunks of bumpin' deep house goodness. The Frenchman aims for the jugular from the start, basing the rolling "WIlbeats" around densely layered drums, heavy sub-bass and the repeated ringing of a telephone. The disco-tinged "Escape" is a little more rubbery but no less percussive, while "The Vinyl Killer" blends vintage, rave-era riffs and stabs, with the kind of sub-heavy groove that was once a hallmark of Derrick Carter releases. Arguably best of all, though, is "I Love You More", a sweet disco-house jam that makes extensive use of the Rene & Angela boogie classic of the same name.

Review: No strangers to working together, Shaun Reeves, co-head of Visionquest, is a Detroiter turned Berliner who has been at the forefront of the industry for over a decade. Likewise, Frenchman DJ W!LD is a time tested veteran of the game who runs two labels, the W label and DAILYCID. They team up for some killer jams on the Bag Of Bones EP, originally released last year on vinyl and now getting a worthy issue on digital format. From the lean and subtle afterhours hypnotism of "Taima",to the dusty and evocative mood music of "Chronicles Of Narnia" and ending with the contemplative microhouse of "Purple Urkle" - this is a terrific release that sees the pair return to their underground roots in true style.

Review: The fast-rising electro label drops a fine split release. First up are Robyrt Hecht & Int Main with a brace of underground cuts. "Waste" resounds to a menacing bass, computer game-style tonal shifts and robotic vocals and has echoes of Murder Capital's output. "Today" is based on a similar approach, albeit with glitchy percussion set to the shuffling 808s, while on "Meta-Measure", the pair decide to juxtapose synth squalls with acidic sequences and sharp metallic drums. Storied electro producer Wibo 'W1b0' Lammerts is up next, with the heavy rhythm and building synths of "Small Increments", while on "No Souls Below The Radar", the Dutch artist goes for a swaggering groove that's full of mesmerising synths.

Review: Vessel is back with this fourth release, by veteran French DJ Wild. He doesn't beat about the bush here, delivering two cuts of hard-hitting upfront house. "Plus Loin" is a deep, techy jam, led by rolling tom tom rhythms, massive snare build-ups and a punishing kick drum. The title track meanwhile, is a seven-minute trippy workout that recalls the deeper side of the '90s New York house sound. Label boss James Barnsley then steps up to deliver a leaner, more taut take on the title track and Franco Cinelli concludes the package with a playfully handbag reworking of Plus Loin.

Review: London label Brock Wild drops a split EP that is rooted in the madness of the 303 sound. First up is Enrico Saba with "Acid Groove". Featuring angry vocal samples, rolling snares and wild acid lines, it's a racuous, exhilarating affair, ideal for peak time usage. "303 Buzzer" by Niceteed, is even more deranged, with squelching, brain-melting 303s riding thunder claps and a firing rhythm. While "Mantra" by Lil'M & Jok and Miguel Rendeiro's "Feel That Way" aren't quite as intense and resound to slower tempos, they nonetheless feature the same kind of wild, tweaked acid lines and percussive builds. Rounding off the release is "Acid Phone", by Sammy W & Alex E, where an insistent vocal is woven over a rolling, conga-led groove.

Review: Coral City return with an excellent release. N&W are on duty again here with three stand-out tracks. 'Rave' is exactly what it says on the tin. It's 808 State meets Larry Heard with a touch of Inner City. Stripped down and four to floor. Classic Roland 909 drums are met with a hook that shakes any dancefloor, expect early support with this. 'Speed' is a killer Nu-Disco / Boogie affair with a nod to the seedy underworld of the '80s, Picture Michelle Pfeiffer throwing shapes on the dancefloor in Scarface, and you are right on the nose. Finally, 'Cherry' is an all-out Italo / Hi-NRG workout, the linndrums, the driving arpeggio bassline and overall melancholy feel, is reminiscent of Bobby Orlando.

Review: Den Haag based label BAKK extends it's mind altering quest with Plafond 2 with two tracks averaging 17 around minutes. From Antwerp's depths Milan W. aka Milan Warmoeskerken who after a couple of fine releases on Jj Funhouse to make his debut on this Dutch label. He brings a stunning track (consisting of three parts) of ambient exotica. The flipside carries synth wizard Ekolali aka Cosmic Letters, who resides on a barn in Sweden and has had previous releases on Not Not Fun Kosmisk Vag and Zeon Light. He gets stuck right in with a rhythmic jam to sink into.

Review: Rainbow offers up an alternative take on the well-worn tribal house sound. The title track is a tracky, jacking affair, lithe but not too understated. "Beats 2" is a heavier track, its rolling groove and thumping drums littered with sharp percussion and a vocal that was once part of Louie Austen's "Hoping", and which exhorts the listener to 'jack me till I scream'. "Tokyo 9am" is a rolling rhythm sprinkled with subtle melodies underscored by a heavy bass and a breathy male vocal intoning 'paradise'. Finally, "Murder City" is also populated by rolling drums and a heavy, system-levelling bassline.

Review: The 3 Feet Deep have now unveiled a very exciting collection of original flavour, as they unveil this jaw-dropping 'Made In France' compilation, which opens up with the super smokey pad sweeps and groovy drum textures of Bernado's 'Bells Of Death', setting the tone very nicely from the jump. Next, Enrico Dragony gives us an old school thumper in 'The Special East', followed by DJ W!LD's more choppy bubbler in 'Blah Blah Fuckin Blah'. To close, Stefan Dubs firstly steps up on 'Awaken Dub', a Tempa-style throwback, packed to the rafters with warbling LFO madness and digitised horn themes, before the smoother electronic textures of Pepe Elle's 'Get Rockin' let's loose a top notch swan song to close things off. Review: Disques Debs is the longest-running and most prolific label to have come out of the Francophone Caribbean. Based in Guadeloupe and helmed by producer and musician Henri Debs, the label ran from the late 1950s to the early 2000s and released over 200 LPs and 300 45s, playing a pivotal role in bringing the creole music of Guadeloupe and Martinique to a wider international audience. Formidable compilers Strut, with the help of Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) and Emile Omar (Roseaux) bring together a second Disques Debs compilation this time chronicling the label's '70s era during a time when the likes of Super Combo, Typical Combo and Les Vikings commanded the label's then-catalogue by breaking through the Caribbean diaspora into Europe and in doing so bringing a new vision of Caribbean music to the world.

Amongst the 38 tracks you'll find fine representatives of a myriad of sub-genres (intelligent techno, dub techno, IDM, ambient techno, gospel techno, and so on), as well as past, present and future classics (Damier and Trent's "Morning Factory", Spacetime Continuum's "Swing Factory", Mark Ernestus's recent Equinoxx remix, the Motor City bliss of Rhythim is Rhythim AKA Derrick May's "Ka-o-tic Harmony", a brilliant old Black Dog Productions workout). In other words, it's a breathlessly brilliant collection of both well-known and obscure gems. It comes heartily recommended.

Review: The latest chapter in Lee Foss' new label sees him showcase some fast rising talent. DeMarzo's "Dance Naked" is a busy, rolling house track, populated with dark rave riffs, mysterious vocal samples and rolling snares. Next up is Raffa FL's "Loco", which ups the tempo to the sound of a rolling groove and a snaking bass. Once again though, the arranging is complex and a 'loco' vocal sample and tropical musical elements unfold over the tribal, drum-heavy groove. Mirko Di Florio's "Say What" marks a return to a more conventional house sound, but clearly this is a release focused on experimentation, as the hoover bass and chopped up vocals of Pirupa's "Last Minute" demonstrates.

Review: To date, French label Act Of Sedition have put out their music in the form of limited-edition seven-inch doublepacks. Now it's the turn of digital buyers to get in on the act, as they serve up all 20 tracks from their last five EPs in one bumper download package. Musically, 'Hang Ten' runs the gamut from straight-up soul, funk and disco - see, for instance, Jean Tyrol's 'How Can You Live Without Love?' or BJ Palmer's 'Lose Your Mind' - to more esoteric cuts like Shriek's 'My Spine' (a re-edit of Shriekback's 1981 punk-funk classic 'My Spine Is The Bassline'), Haules Baules' new wave-y 'TC Rhythm' or a W10-via-Bully Boy re-edit of The Clash's 'London Calling', with a respectully rendered dub of Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby' leading the charge for yours truly.

Review: Glasgow Underground's contribution to the 2020 Miami sampler mountain may well induce feelings of deja vu: not only does it include multiple tracks from label boss Kevin McKay recent much-vaunted 'No Samples...' covers album, but much of the rest is in a similar vein, with McKay and a selection of musical buddies reworking a load more house classics to bring them in line with 21st Century production values. To our ears, though, it's the fresh cuts here that are the more interesting, and happily there are plenty of those on offer, too, coming from the likes of Vanilla Ace, Mirko & Maex, Reblok, Adapter, Sam Dexter and Elliot Fitch.

Review: Hearty congratulations to Michael Reinboth, whose Compost Records' imprint recently celebrated its 25th birthday. As a way of marking this momentous occasion, the label has conjured up this expansive compilation, which offers up a blend of fresh remixes of label classics, overlooked revisions, bonus cuts and the odd hard-to-find classic (see Move D's superb "Hurt Me", which first appeared on the imprint in the mid-90s). Highlights are plentiful from start to finish, with Roman Flugel's throbbing rework of Beanfield's "Human Patterns", I:Cube's LFO-influenced re-make of A Forest Mighty Black's "Fresh In My Mind", Joakim's funk-fuelled acid take on Marbert Rocel's "Dance Slow" and Die Orangen's wonderfully druggy interpretation of Marsmobil's "Sometimes I Don't Regret" all catching the ear.

Review: With 20 years spent releasing, distributing and representing techno and electro's finest producers, it's fair to say that ePM is a true champion of the underground. That commitment comes into sharp focus on EPM20, which brings together music from all of the Eps that the label released over the past year. The listener is really spoilt for choice: Regis delivers the beautifully ghostly techno of "Beyond The Reach Of Time Pt 1", while Robert Hood keeps the mood mysterious on the aptly named "Shadows". While the compilation spotlights prominent producers, it also showcases artists who sometimes fly under the radar - on this occasion, it's Paul Mac with the drum-heavy "Nothing Remains" and Carl Finlow's nocturnal electro on "Optogenetic". The fact that it's dedicated to the sadly departed Tim Baker is also a lovely touch.

Review: An absolute leviathan of a compilation from Project Allout here, and it's just in time for some Christmas cheer from one of the fastest growing UK bass hubs in the game! A tad packed for us to go through it all, but this is guaranteed quality, especially given the fact that the release features plenty of label regulars, new faces and even some pretty incredible cameo appearances from the likes of Caspa, Deadbeat and Dubzta. Each puts in a fine performance, particularly Deadbeat with his "Street Life" cut, a glorious mashup of funky house breaks and wobbled low-end. Be sure to check the licks from Spooky, Mr Dubzta and Tuff Culture, too. Badman vibes and another stunner from Project Allout.

Review: Since launching in 2010, Miami's Disco Balls label have brought us music from the likes of C Da Afro, Frank Virgilio, The Stoned and Ken@Work; since 2015, they've also been serving up annual genre-based compilations, with this nu-disco best-of selection for 2020 having house, disco house and jackin' house sisters. Across 19 tracks from almost as many artists you'll find everything from raw funk (Jerem A's 'Do The Do'), via loose-limbed jazz-funk (Dubplate Disco's 'Between Us'), to shimmering Balearic grooves (Zulu Natives' 'Say It Yeah Now'), making for a collection that's well worth investigating, particularly if you like your nu-disco on the faithfully 70s-sounding side...

Review: French label Politics Of Dancing are back celebrating three years in the business (already!) with great releases by the likes of Lopaski, Carlos Sanchez and Two Diggers of Robsoul fame. There's a great cast on here to celebrate, with legends new school and old alike. Franck Roger's soulful, deep and uplifting "Night To Live", Berlin young gun Nick Beringer's deep swing on "Juicy Lucy", London underground hero James Barnsley's "Play The Game" and Senzala's "Spiral" too: which channels the early noughties tech house vibe of local legends D'julz or David Duriez. And there are many more highlights where they came from. Congrats!

Review: This summer, Steve Lawler is hosting a midweek party at Sankeys Ibiza under the Viva Warriors title. Here, he joins forces with fellow resident Darius Syrossian to lay down a two disc mix set that touches on all of his usual inspirations. That means an atmospheric trawl through nuggety darkroom house, tribal flavours and murky tech-house, with additional helpings of basement-baiting New York deepness and European fluidity. In truth, Viva Warriors is arguably more fun and upbeat than many of Lawler's recent mixes, suggesting a new-found love of reaching out for the lasers and hip-wigglin' groovery. Maybe that's Syrossian's influence; either way, it makes for an enjoyable two-disc mix-up.

Review: There are few compilations that hold as much weight and gather as much excitement as Plastician's Terrorhythm masterclass known as 'Wavepool'. Today we take in their third official volume, which sees 33 different artists join forces for a sumptuous collection of icy melodies and glistening soundscapes, showcasing more than ever how versatile the wave sound has become. The roster is vast, as we see heavyweight wave representatives such as Kareful, Ravver, Rapture4D, Klasey Jones and even Plastician himself get involved for a truly mind blowing tracklisting. The whole project is outstanding, but if we were forced into naming highlights, the glistening arpeggios and hellish atmospheric design of 'Take Me' from Nick Neutronz immediately jumps out at us, alongside the pure euphoria of Deadcrow's 'Unity' and the big room synthesizer pressure of 'Skillit' from Brothel. Incredible stuff as per!

Review: This is the third 'best of' from Phil Weeks' Robsoul in just five months - the label celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2020 - but the quality standard remains high. Featuring several of Weeks' own productions alongside cuts from the likes of DJ W!LD, Jordan Peak and Chris Stussy, the album covers an impressive range of house ground, from filter disco (see, for instance, Weeks/Hector Moralez/Fries & Bridges collab 'Peep Game') to chunky, eyes-down 3am throbbers (Politics Of Dancing's 'Hi Soul') to Weeks & Kid Enigma's retro, electro-tinged 'Love Me Right'. As such, it's a package that warrants investigation by househeads of many persuasions.

Review: Next up from the Robsoul Essential crew we take in this stunning new selection as they present the sixth edition of Smokers Delight. It's jam packed with goodies across the hip hop scale, from the smooth yet soulful approach of Ladybird & JFilt on 'All I Wanna Say', to the almost breakbeat drumwork of 'Nightlife' from DJ W!ld and choppy rap stylings of 'Players' from El Pres Beats. It's a fantastic compilation, bringing together a tonne of different futuristic styles, glued together by their emotional sound design. There are a couple of instant favourites for us, including the killer minimal disco link up of Phil Weeks, Joss Moog & Around7 on 'What Can I Do?', alongside the boombap inspired drum work and techy phone melodies of 'Warned Bros.' from Homequest. It's a great listen start to finish!

Review: Luke McKeehan is Vancouver's longest-serving deep house DJ and producer. His Nordic Trax label has been championing the style for just shy of two decades, and established itself as an international force long before the city became a by-word for dreamy dancefloor goodness. Rain City Blues is McKeehan's opportunity to showcase his mixing and selection skills. It contains a wealth of smooth and sultry deep house treats, mostly taken from the label's vast archives, presented here in mixed, and unmixed formats. You'll find more recent fare from Matt Caine and Christoph, vintage cuts from the vaults by Joshua Iz, Gavin Froome and Johnny Fiasco, and a sprinkling of ocean-deep tech-house treats amongst the slick, U.S style dancefloor grooves.

Review: Phil Weeks presents another volume of Robsoul Edits and after previously being compiled by the likes of D'julz and Chris Carrier it's now turn for Joss Moog who presents the usual suspects while giving credit to the edit. He did a brilliant job while taking the razor to Phil Weeks/DJ Sneak's funky disco loops on "Class In Session 1" and the dirty afterhours electro-house of Sexicanz "Bring Some Weed To The DJ Booth" and not to mention the red-edits of a bunch of his own tracks such as "Forever Pimpin'" (sexy and dusty deepness!) and "Welcome to Ohio" (Moodymann style jazzy goodness!).

Review: Phil Weeks is without a doubt one the busiest people in the business, with a relentless release schedule on Robsoul that manages consistency, unleashing grooves of the funkiest, bumpiest and loopy variety, week in week out. It's time for another volume of Robsoul's Most Wanted, Vol 6 to be exact and it's an all-star affair as per usual! Highlights for us this time around weren't limited to: label mainstay Around 7 with the funky lo-slung groove that's fittingly titled "Word Of Low", Romanian wunderkind and rising star Guy From Downstairs with the thumping yet emotive soul jam "The Mesteacan", The Bosconi affiliated Minimono on the disco loops of "Buddy Now Buddy" and man of the moment Tommy Vicari Jnr with more quality as displayed on the simply uplifting "Pasci".

Review: Phil Week's Robsoul imprint launches its new Robsoul Edits series, inaugurated by up and coming Frenchman Around7. To quote Phil Weeks himself "whether its reworking for the dancefloor, tweaking for your tastebuds or looking to inject a new freshness to the funk, the best edits are always remembered". Highlights include edits of Dave Dubbz "Lost In The Past" which sounds like DJ Sneak circa Sneaky Trax II, Parisian DJ W!ld's deep groove "Disco & Shit" and probably one of the most needed edits of all: a splice up of Lorenzo's classic "Get Deep" from 2006. Nail of UK legends Bent also appears; Around7's edit of his track "Sweet Feet" from last year gets a pretty decent re-rub too, we must say.
