Review: Asa Moto duo Oliver Geerts and Gilles Noe impressed with last year's debut EP, the synth-pop delight that was "Stay Awake/Wanowan Efem". This follow-up for DeeWee, co-produced by label founders (and Soul Wax members) David and Stephen Dewaele, is every bit as impressive, even if its four tracks draw on a much wider palette of influences. Opener "System Naturae" wraps sharp, rave type stabs around a jaunty drum machine groove, deep melody flourishes and warped analogue bass, while "Make Me Prada" is an exercise in alien funk/ambient/synth-pop fusion. Then you'll find the bleep-laden analogue house thrust of "Athina", while closer "Syriacid" is a sweaty jog through acid-fired deep house pastures with wayward pop overtones.

Review: Belgian duo Asa Moto (AKA Oliver Geerts and Gilles Noe) have been regular visitors to Soulwax's Deewee studio over the last couple of years. Playtime is their third EP for the associated Deewee label and, at six tracks deep, the duo's most expansive to date, too. Musically, it's pleasingly eccentric, basing much of the action around darting, alien-sounding synthesizer motifs, warped electronics, heavily effected vocals and quirky, lo-fi drum machine rhythms. We can hear the influence of post-punk disco-pop, skewed synth-pop and early experimental electro, but the six assembled tracks never particularly sound like any of these. In fact, the EP's greatest strength - aside from its' melodious and ear-pleasing vibe - is its fiendishly hard to pigeonhole nature.
