Review: The sublime Important imprint has done it again here with another blast from the undiscovered past. Zurich was a test project by various different artists during the '80s and '90s, including a member of Warp act Seefeel. As you'd expect, there's a little bit of everything in here as far as styles and influences go, but it's all pretty cutting-edge nevertheless. Tracks like "Tzarist" or "Odessa" sound fresher than ever, recalling the sounds of luminaries such as AFX or Autechre, to name a few. Unmissable stuff.
Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint got off to a promising start last year with the Wrong Headspace 12" from Latvian artist N1L. Gamble's purview for the label is clearly international as this second UIQ release dips into the world of Zuli, aka Ahmed El Ghazoly, Egyptian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Cairo. Limited to 400 copies. Jagged beat experiments merge with high definition sound design plus classic and exotic instrumentation on "Robotic Handshakes in 4D", it's an apt title, really. New frontiers in bass music are explored on "131001G", texturised minimal techno on "Ahmed?" and rather abrasive bass assisted noise experiments like on final track "Dr Beckett". What next for UIQ? Consider us intrigued.
Review: Having previously plied his trade on Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint, Zuli (real name Ahmed El Ghazoly) resurfaces on Milan-based "irregular noise" specialists Haunter. The Egyptian multi-instrumentalist and producer is renowned for producing tracks seeped in noise and blessed with notably jagged beats, and as expected there's more imaginative dystopian madness throughout Trigger Finger. For example, "X3" melds together distorted noise, heavily manipulated spoken word samples, punishing sub bass and grizzly guitars, while the title track is the kind of mind-bending, post-jungle insanity that used to be a feature of the late 90s UK IDM scene. The EP's less rhythmically minded moments, such as creepy opening soundscape "Everyday", are also impressive.
