Review: Having previously proved his mettle with a pair of albums in quick succession ((2015's "Projections" and 2016's "Love Songs: Part 2"), Archie Fairhrust AKA Romare decided to take a little longer to produce his third album for Ninja Tune. The thing is, you can tell. Full to bursting with great ideas and canny fusions of various strains of house, techno, electro and IDM style electronica, the album's nine tracks bristle with sparkling melodies, raw analogue basslines, occasional choice samples (see the bluesy "The River") and beats that demand further attention. The plentiful highlights include picturesque downtempo number "Deliverance", sleazy and rave-ready opener "Gone", cheery upbeat workout "Heaven" and quietly jazzy downbeat closer "Home".
Review: Blissful, ice cold euphoria. What better set of emotions to feel when diving into a project eh? Those are the exact feelings that rush to the surface whenever we take the time to explore an MKII project in full, with this latest 'Home' LP on Four40 being more of the joyous same. From start to finish this EP peppers your serotonin with room shaking harmonic beauty and thunderous breaks-driven rhythms, dipping and weaving into more garage-sentric themes from time to time as well. The mechanical drum squelches of 'Blue Skies', the intense bass belches of 'Touch Me' and swampy percussive drips of 'Check Dis' would be our immediate stand outs from the project, but we couldn't recommend exploring it from start to finish any higher!
Review: S?o Paulo producer and spoken word artist Laima finds her debut in the conceptual album Home. Featuring contributions from Iggor Cavalera and production by the Dewaele brothers, aka Soulwax, the album comes together with Liama's vocal and synth tracks plotted between the beats of Iggor Cavalera. Themes include "Disco Pregnancy", "Anxiety" and "Power", with each track delivering a different take on poetics and spoken word that makes the mind dance as much as body. "To be a woman, a mum and a female producer: all of these feelings were in the music," Liama explains, and the storytelling inside Home comes through in many sounds, colours and weird and wonderful ways. Our highlight: "Life and Dreams".
