Review: What with its vintage-looking artwork and retro sounds, you could be forgiven for thinking this EP was a re-issue from back in the day. Club 303 however, is actually a contemporary clubnight in Mexico run by producer/DJs Andre VII and Julian Discoruido. This two-track single is their homage to the joys of old skool dance music. The title track is a beefed-up slice of 21st century acid house complete with rolling bassline and big splashy snares that build into a hysterical climax. "In & Out" is an explosive exploration of classic Chicago house featuring contributions from local producer Rubinskee.
Review: Next up from the Doro Sounds camp, we find ourselves diving into a very enjoyable three track display from J.A.B, exploiting the more experimental side of underground bass music. We begin with 'Self Esteem', an extremely unique interpretation of the classic bass house sound, focussing on crunchy bass sounds and gnarly textures, coupled with a very groovy set of drums. Next, Trickshaw joins the party for another fuzzy roller, using uniquely simple melodic twists with a very cool bass lead to inspire more late night dancing. Finally 'Ladder' gives us a more tech-influenced approach, unleashing some bubbling synth work into the mix for a wavy final slice.
Review: Taking a brief departure from their trademark breakbeat bangers, RamSkank invite DJ J on board for a broader, bolder, hair-raising EDM workout. "You & I" is driven by dreamy, spiralling synthlines with big dreamy backdrops while "Just Let Go" throws down much more of an unashamed stomp. Remix-wise the label return to their more subversive, underground mannerisms with a dark, heads-down chugger rub of "You & I" and stark, stripped back, old skooly tech-rattler rub of "Just Let Go".
Review: One of the most successfully prolific bootleg dealers on the nu-funk scene, Actual Sounds celebrate half a decade of dancefloor hell raising with this epic 40-track compendium that showcases their most talented artists and most bolshy of booties. If you've not had the pleasure of making the label's acquaintance yet, now is most certainly the time. From slamming up-tempo rip-ups such as Actual Phantom's insane "Fat Eric" to slinkier, sleazier jams such as Funk In A Can's killer electro blend of Luniz "I Got 5 On It" Actual Sounds understand all members of the dancefloor from moody rudeboy to a laser-loving raver. Booties don't come with much more distinction than this; here's to another five years.
