Review: Not one week from their last Disco Cakes release, Defkline and Red Polo return on sister label Hot Cakes for another pair of rambunctious party bangers. "Oh Sevre! Look What You Done" sees the pair rework Julio Bashmore's ubiquitous hit "Au Seve" to fine effect across two versions. The "Breakbeat Garage" version does exactly what it says on the tin, cutting up that infectious bassline and giving it a touch more bite, while the drum & bass mix ramps things with a crazy tempo and thick subs. If such a thing is possible, Defkline & Red Polo have actually improved on the original.
Review: One of drum & bass' most unconventional producers, Icicle has repeatedly re-written his own rules when it comes to forging his own sound and this time around he's chosen to ditch the dubstep for cut-throat political verses in "Problem" from Salford's own master of the vocal dark arts, Skittles. Twisting back into contorted bass and synths for "The Edge", a dirty, electrified stomp and step through the Icicle mainframe. It's good to be challenged every once in a while.
Review: Whistle crew! Horn crew! Stamina crew! Insomniax's Freshold continues his heartfelt homage to the Sanctuary with the second part of this authentic foundation celebration. "How Does This Feel" is the pure essence of rave, kicking us off on a true early 90s tip with detuned synths and a hook that nods its cap to the Prodigy and Orbital. "London Soul" flips the focus to a more formative time in drum & bass and the influence of Good Looking. Done from the heart and hitting with 2019 production values, Freshold is killing it with these Saxon Street EPs.
