Review: Crash Recoil is Anthony Childs' first artist album as Surgeon in half a decade. During that time, some techno producers have embraced 'business' while others now limit their productivity to Instagram. Not so Childs. While grounded in the dense sound that is unmistakably Surgeon, its author says the album draws on disparate influences. The UK producer's love of industrial and noise surfaces on the grimy underbelly of "Metal Pig" and "Second Magnitude Stars", while a more visceral iteration is audible on the frazzled menace of "We Laugh And Clap At The Circus". In contrast, the angular framework he designs on "Leadership Contest" is every bit as hypnotic as vintage Robert Hood. Remaining in this field, "Subcultures" sees him conjure up a textured, haunting groove - it's Surgeon at his most atmospheric, but still powered by a tough electronic rhythm.

Review: Given the rise in popularity of Dance Mania-inspired ghetto-house and ghetto-tech releases over the last couple of years, it was perhaps inevitable that someone would put together a compilation celebrating the label's greatest moments. That it was Strut that did it with Dance Mania Hardcore Traxx: Dance Mania Records 1986-1997 was something of a comfort; Quinton Scott's crate-digging imprint does these kind of history-driven compilations so well. Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness is a second trawl through the archives of the label and features some fifteen cuts of little-known or hard-to-find tracks from the likes of DJ Funk, Paul Johnson, DJ Rush, Jammin' Gerald and Wax Master Maurice (whose bizarre but brilliant "Bounce That Body" is a highlight).

Review: For his third artist album, Peter Trimbacher aka Metapattern has landed on Mord. It's a good fit because the label has always bridged the gap between abstract sounds and hard, industrial techno. Silicone Cell embodies these sensibilities. "Construct Of Impurity" teems with waves of droning bass and tingling metallic percussion, but it avoids the dance floor. "Cleansing" also features layers of gnarly percussion and bass tones that create a striking abstract piece. In contrast, "Artificial Awareness" is a hypnotic, chiming groove, while on "Descent Into Oblivion", Trimbacher delivers the kind of tough, lean techno that Mord is known for. There's also a hint of the dystopian vibe that Bay Mooy's label occasionally gives off, audible of the mechanical stepping rhythm of "Miasma".

Review: Given Deetron's penchant for mining the sounds of classic Detroit techno, his ear for melody, and the presence of Ben Westbeech on vocals, it's perhaps unsurprising that "Rhythm" has the air of a classic tech-soul anthem. It comes backed with some stellar remixes, too. Chief among these are the two rubs from Will Saul and October (vocal and instrumental), which sound like a cross between Laurent Garnier's "Crispy Bacon", Ken Ishii and Jeff Mills' more melodic, electro-centric efforts - all murky bass, heavy rhythms and intergalactic melodies. If those are a little too tough for your tastes, there's also a classic deep US house interpretation from Karizma which is similarly sublime.

Old School - (5:31) 150 BPM Hot
The Sound - (5:37) 150 BPM
Review: Hot on the heels of his Close Your Eyes release, Francesco Pierfelici aka Alignment returns to KNTXT. As the title suggests, his latest EP is inspired by 90s dance music. The title track unfolds to a frenetic pace. Centred on a galloping rhythm, it breaks into the kind of hypnotic MC chatter that wouldn't sound out of place on early hardcore. "The Sound" is just as pacy. Powered by a squelchy bass, militaristic claps and crescendo-inducing snare rolls, it also features a grinding Hoover riffs and a rap that is nothing short of infectious. As always with release on Charlote de Witte's label, expect Old School to raise the roof whenever and wherever it's played.

Review: Charlotte de Witte returns to her own KNTXT label with another big room release. Both in its title and sound design, there are dystopian undercurrents at play; "Sgadi Li Mi" features an apocalyptic mixture of gritty acid lines and tribal chants - playing out over one of de Witte's typical tribal rhythms - while on " Return To Nowhere" she fuses haunting looped vocals with a similar rhythmic backdrop. While "Emsemble" appears to summon up lost spirits thanks to its fusion of snaking rhythm and ghostly chants, the closing track, "What's In The Past" offers hope for the future thanks to de Witte's use of mesmerising choral loops.

Review: Michel Lauriola is the latest artist to grace MORD sub-label Kazerne - and Calm Chaos is sure to appeal to fans of tough club techno. The release starts with the dense, rolling groove of "Complete" before Lauriola ups the tempo and intensity for "The Wait" and "Basic Solution". Led by pounding rhythms and grinding riffs, they are the very essence of uncompromising industrial techno. While it's just as pacy, "Returns" revolves around a rolling groove. Lauriola also shows his ability to venture down a more experimental path on the gnarly "Twang", where noisy sound scapes unravel over an offbeat rhythm. The title track is in a similar vein, with Lauriola dropping a dense groove that skews more towards the dance floor.

Lead cut "City Lights" kicks off with some deep and melancholic bassline house next to some moody techno reminiscent of early Ben Klock in "10247". "The Clap" delivers some footwork inspirations next to some spookier electro wares in "Neophile" - banging. "Pisecean" gets all breakbeat and new age in the mix alongside some warehouse techno in "Regular Disturbances" alongside some melodic 'Mathew Johnson' inspired sounds in "Old Paris". Closing out the EP is "What" - a British Murder Boys-esque slice of Middle Eastern themed gothic EBM.

Neither Nor - "Mess" - (5:23) 126 BPM
Fabrication - "Blotter Spotter" - (7:07) 128 BPM Hot
Review: Like previous instalments, the twelfth Senso Sounds split release delivers fresh techno from some of the scene's most talented new producers. Sinisa Tamamovic's "Sand" is a prime example of this innovation, as gritty analogue textures are teased out over dense kicks and steely hi hats. Neither Nor's "Mess" is powered by a similar aesthetic. At the heart of the arrangement is a dense, brooding bass, with mysterious tones unfolding against this back drop. Fabrication's "Blotter Spotter" doesn't deviate from the overall mood, but it is more club focused. Led by a warbling acid bass and jittery percussion, it completes this adventurous release.

Review: With a background in drum'n'bass, Vinicius Honorio has pivoted seamlessly to techno and makes his debut on Blueprint. However, he hasn't abandoned his roots. On the title track, dense polyrhythms prevail, providing a pummelling backdrop to atmospheric synth lines. "Reiki" is also powered by an opaque groove and tough kicks - on this occasion, Honorio uses them as the backdrop for swirling filters. "Uruk" sees the Brazilian artist venture down a more purist techno path. Led by a pounding metallic groove and noisy percussive bursts, it drops unexpectedly into chord-led breakdowns. Closing out the release is "Visions", a peak-time banger that centres on a spiralling rhythm.

Review: Seven years on from the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, Kevin McAuley has finally delivered a follow-up. Pleasingly, there's no grandiose conceptual theme or attempt to shoehorn in weaker tracks in a bid to showcase versatility; instead, McAuley has just done what he does best, namely delivering fearsome dancefloor workouts that blur the boundaries between techno, UK bass and the more warped and intense end of analogue house. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the wobble bass-propelled, warehouse-ready heat of 'Instillation' and the sub-heavy, post-UKG shuffle of 'Hole Away', to the heavy-stepping, R&B vocal-sampling breathlessness of 'If' and the big room-ready techno hypnotism of 'Changing Channels'. He even provides his own twisted take on uplifting trance via the brilliantly hectic and rushing 'Bad Lines'.

Review: Dustin Zahn returns to Blueprint to deliver a four-tracker that resounds to understated force. "Rotator" is an atmospheric, rolling track. Led by dense, tribal drums and featuring mysterious synth lines, it's a subtle but impactful track. "Conduit of Chaos" is based on a similar premise - although on this occasion, the rhythm is more stripped back and is powered by impactful claps. The pulsating, clanging bass at the heart of "Catharsis" lends it the requisite punch for its flowing groove. The title track is the most up-tempo track on the release - and it sees Zahn deliver a gradually building, vocal-sampling percussive sucker punch.

Legal Vacuum - (6:24) 140 BPM
Review: Next up on Hardgroove is Nuke with a diverse EP. "Cookie Love" starts the release in frenetic mode. Claps crash in over a menacing organ, with this interplay held together by a driving rhythm. It has echoes of Robert Hood's minimal techno sound. "Legal Vacuum" is another peak-time track. Centred on a layered, building filter, Nuke underpins it with a steely groove. "Ignorant Groovers" is also stripped back and linear. Revolving around a lithe rhythm, it features subtle vocal samples and chiming bells. The only exception to this approach is "Ten Eleven Twelve". Led by dubbed out drums, once again it sees Nuke fuse a looped vocal with subtle filter builds.

Review: While Luke Slater is busy as always, his Planetary Assault Systems output has slowed since the release of the all conquering Messenger LP for Ostgut Ton in 2011. For Future Modular, Slater is less visceral and more arpeggiated than previous releases, harking back to a '90s-early-2000s PAS-sound, specifically the title-track. On the B-sides there's the deep, trippy and linear "Serc", but before that there's a sinister "Riot In Silo" that's showered in 909-hi-hats to get through first.

Review: Klint's work has appeared on what reads like a who's who of techno labels, including Soma, Rekids and Planet Rhythm. Now he returns to CLR for his latest EP. "Tomahawk" revolves around a pulsating groove encased in nickel plated percussion, making for a linear, hypnotic track. On "Forces", he draws from dub influences, integrating utilitarian hi hats with muffled vocal samples and eerie chord sequences. "All In" travels a similar path. While it's more frenetic, a looped chant and deft breakdowns and builds elevate it beyond typical peak time techno. The title track sees Klint focus on atmospheric dub chords and mysterious vocals. Driven by rattling percussion, "Immersive Culture" rounds off this release in style.

Review: Having impressed via EP on some seriously good underground labels - think Lost Palms, EPH White and Shall Not Fade for starters - DJ Boring has been snapped up by Ninja Tune's big bucks Technicolour offshoot. The London-based producer's first outing for the imprint is headed up by title track "Like Water", a busy and bustling deep house number that cloaks rolling house beats in dreamy, sustained chords, colourful unfurling melodies and sharp, trance-like synth sounds. Elsewhere, "Another Day" is a warmer, chunkier and even more kaleidoscopic take on the same pleasingly off-kilter house sound, "Stockholm Syndrome" is a more classical deep house number that boasts weighty sub-bass and sparkling riffs, and "Seems Like Yesterday" is a melodious and ear-pleasing deep neo-trance affair.

Review: Never let it be said that Robert Hood is letting his listeners languish in a sonic comfort zone. The veteran producer's latest EP under his own name starts with a jolt, as the title track deploys pounding, industrial drums and a chain metal rhythm. "Pathetic" is just as intense. Based on a relentless groove, it sees Hood deploy a spiralling chord sequence that filters its way to a spine-tingling finale. "Outsider" is based on a similar premise, but this time hollowed out drums support a niggling build. This release effortlessly shatters the assumption that Hood would continue to focus on the less abrasive, house-influenced Floorplan project.

Review: Cardiff's Bodhi makes a triumphant return to Hotflush Recordings with the Popit EP, following up on the coat tails of 2023's acclaimed Edge Of Blue record. Since Bodhi's emergence in 2012 with a string of highly praised edits and subsequent releases on labels like Future Classic and Rinse, Bodhi reentered the scene in 2021 with releases for Kneaded Pains and Dance Trax. Fusing unmistakable UK influences here with echoes of Paul Johnson and the raw energy of Chicago's harder edge, Bodhi delivers an EP that's sure to ignite any dancefloor, passing the acid test with "Flip", getting heavy on the breaks in "Orison", and going full Head High in "MIsty".
