Review: "Emerge" is a phenomenal debut album that cements Berlin-based producer Red Rooms' position as a rising star in techno. The LP seamlessly blends driving energy with subtle experimentation, offering a well-rounded listening experience for techno purists and newcomers alike. Red Rooms' signature sound is on full display throughout the album. Clandestine sonic textures and short, infectious melodies intertwine with the powerful, locked-in grooves that propel each track forward. The album boasts several tracks primed to ignite dance floors. "No Turning Back" is a prime example, with its rave-ready stabs and relentless energy. "Transcendency" offers a more alien twist, merging driving techno with otherworldly drum patterns that will leave listeners mesmerized, while "Cypher" showcases Red Rooms' understanding of minimalism, channeling the spirit of Robert Hood with its stripped-down yet impactful groove. A must-listen.

Review: Dynamic Forces follows last year's Hardride release on Planet Rhythm with this firing four-tracker. "First Day of Life" is a Purposemaker-style dense groove, replete with insistent stabs and vocal snatches. Clocking in at the 140bpm mark, it gets the release off to a frenetic - but funky - start. "New Set Up" resounds to a similar tempo, but on this occasion, atmospheric synths lend the arrangement a deeper edge. In contrast, "Plague" is all about its bruising drums, utilitarian claps and a pounding rhythm. Returning to Millsian influences again, Dynamic Forces drops "Tango". This time, the focus is on a white-knuckle ride through grainy, relentless minimalism.

Review: Planet Rhythm continues its commitment to supporting new artists on this fine split release. Shabaam & Aladarus kick-start the EP with "Colossal", their debut for the label. Led by surging chords and tight percussive bursts, it lives up to its title. Lenny San's "Orbital" follows in a similar vein, albeit with a more intense take, as chords bluster and build over tough kicks and insistent hi hats. OFF / GRID, who has become a regular artist on Planet Rhythm, fuses tight percussion and steely drums with a looped synth on "Inner City Blues". Maintaining this tough but musical theme, Rove Ranger's "Onakum" integrates vocal snatches with hissing hi hats and dubby stabs.

Review: Following 2021's debut on Planet Rhythm, VIII-RE returns to the label with another impactful release. The title track gets the release off to a frenetic start. Featuring a combination of pounding tribal drums, moody bass and effective filters, these elements play host to a terse vocal sample. "DF-RT" follows a similar path. This time, the relentless kicks are augmented by searing rave stabs. On "Shimmering", VIII-RE explores a different approach. Fusing a rolling rhythm with epic chord builds, these elements combine for a dramatic club track. Rounding off the release is "TMT-2". Led by reverberating claps and featuring ghostly synth builds, it's a rousing finale.

Review: Veteran producer Dolby D teams up with emerging artist MarAxe for a release that is anything but formulaic. "Subdue" is set to a high pace -one that the rest of the EP emulates. However, despite the fast tempo, its rhythm is lithe, with subtle filtered builds combined with dense percussion. "Expel" is also powered by a relentless groove and percussive elements. On this occasion, the percussion alternates between delicate shards and powerful snare rolls that provide the back drop for a ponderous vocal sample. The title track maintains this fast tempo, but the sound takes a darker turn. Sheet metal riffs are fused with rattling hi hats , making for a furious finale.

Review: Planet Rhythm regular Red Rooms returns to the label with this dance floor focused four-tracker. The title track revolves around layered, building chords and a relentless percussive backdrop. Changing direction, the driving rhythm of "2B110BE" is filled with insistent bleeps. "On The Level" offers a more insistent take on this approach. Red Rooms ups the tempo, makes the drums more visceral, resulting in a frazzled but hypnotic looped techno track. "Prometheus" sees him go down a minimal route; powered by an angular Rob Hood-style groove, peppered with bleak synth stabs, it makes for a compelling finale to this fine, hard-hitting record.

This Risk Management EP serves us four more numbers and kicks off with its man of the hour, klint, with a pumping industrial groove track "Flacon". Linear System teams up with Kimahri on a wet and atmospheric "Vessel" while the title-track of this EP goes to Rove Ranger's dank and tunnelling lead cut - followed by some deep and Detroit inspired "Line Of Sight" by Red Rooms.

Review: Tony Scott aka Edit Select opens his account for 2019 and debuts on the long-running label Planet Rhythm with this superb purist release. "Vault 2017" starts the release with a powerful fusion of spiky, jagged rhythms and atmospheric chords, while on "Vault 2016", the seasoned producer opts for a more stripped back approach. The percussion bubbles relentlessly beneath the surface while dubbed out drums and haunting one-note tones occupy the foreground. It's certainly a more stark proposition than the deep, rolling "Vault 2014", which resounds to snappy hi-hats and a snaking rhythm. As one would expect from a producer of Scott's calibre, the release keeps the listener engaged right to the end with the acid-frazzled "Vault 2015".

Review: The heavyweight Dutch producer delivers a suitably slamming release for Glenn Wilson's long-running imprint. "Dolls" is all dense drums and abrasive riffs unfolding over a grainy bass. "Burn" is less upfront, with a trance synth its central focus, but behind this musical element there lurks a jarring rhythm. "Thood" makes no such concessions to musicality; howling analogue riffs spit out fire and brimstone as banging, metallic drums pound away in the background. But Bas Mooy has a more considered approach, which he applies on "Dust"; its drums are heavy but less driving, and the sonic bleeps reminiscent of Sleeparchive or Sahko.

Review: To answer that famous rave question on his behalf, it's not hard to guess where Toni Alvarez was in 1992. As the wild, gurgling acid of "You Can Do It" and the bee sting builds of "Insane" both suggest, it's likely that he was spending time immersing himself in the pounding acid of early Hardfloor. Of course, there is no single answer to that eternal question: the distorted kicks and tortured 303s of "Mobius" points to a youth misspent listening to Liberator techno and the squat sounds of Bunker, while the pummelling industrial kicks and wild hoover stabs of "Communicate" will transport the listener back to Sven Vath's Omen at its very peak.
