Five (Josh Wink remix) - (8:00) 130 BPM
from $1.97
Review: As the matter-of-fact title makes clear, this tasty four-tracker delivers fresh re-rubs of tracks from KiNK's superb 2017 album Playground. First in to bat is Dusky, who re-casts "Perth" as a saucer-eyed chunk of rush-inducing, big room-friendly heaviness rich in darting synth stabs, held-note synth-strings, bustling beats, celebratory piano riffs and heady old school vocal samples. In typical fashion, Radio Slave man Matt Edwards turns "Teo Techno" into a dark, sleazy and mind-altering early morning thumper, while Josh Wink re-imagines "Five" as a restless, undeniably psychedelic throb-job. Arguably the best remix, though, comes from Matthew Herbert, whose "Funnel Dub" of "Yom Thorke" gleefully joins the dots between his glitchy, micro-house past, swinging Afro-tech and otherworldly alien funk.

Review: Although he is mainly associated with his own Warm Up or Pole Group labels, Oscar Mulero started his relationship with Token back in 2008. Now a decade later, the Spanish techno powerhouse is issuing Electric Shades, a sci-fi obsessed release on the Belgian label. "Echo" resounds to eerie bleeps and a subtle groove, while at the more visceral end of the Mulero scale is the rough, doubled up rhythms of "The Voyage" and the searing, Millsian "Violet Dust". Clearly Mulero is on a journey on this release as the dense, heads down "Chasing Shadows" recalls his loopy past, while he shows a more refined, tunneling approach on "The Cycle" and "Out Of Sight".

Review: For his latest album, Martyn has turned a real-life, near-death experience into one of his greatest artistic statements. Recorded after he was recovering from a heart attack, it sees the storied Dutch producer at his most vulnerable. Granted, there are typical Martyn steppers like the melancholic "Manchester" and the recoiling sub-bass of "Nya", but the album also contains abstract, contemplative pieces like "Voids One", the jazzed-out drums of "Why" and the show-stopping, late night piano piece, "Try To Love You". Clearly, his experience has left him with an appreciation for music in its rawest form and thankfully, he is happy to share it with his audience.

Review: John Talabot and Axel Boman released their debut album as Talaboman last year, and now R&S are issuing remixes of tracks from The Night Land. First up is Superpitcher, who is tasked with reworking "Dins El Llit". The Kompakt star uses a stripped back, bleepy groove as a basis to conjure up blurry vocal samples and pulsing 303s, making for a subtle, tripped out affair. The same can be said about Samo DJ's take on "The Ghosts Hood". While it is more pacey than Superpitcher's rework, the break beats are understated and the acid line keeps niggling away. The final remix comes from Luke Slater under his LB Dub Corp guise; on his version of ""Brutal Chugga Chugga", the UK veteran delivers a superb, low-slung, jacking Chicago workout.

Review: Perc Trax launches a new split release series with a difference. All of the tracks on Forever 1 have been tested in clubs by label owner Ali 'Perc' Wells', and it shows. Manni Dee's "Gulabi Gang" is a ferocious stomper, led by concrete weight kicks and wild metallic riffs, while on Rebekah's "Diamond in the Rough", visceral drums, noisy percussion and white noise riffs prevail. The label has also tapped Scalameriya for a track and "Slobodna" resounds to broken percussion, noisy betas and a searing central riff that fades in and out, causing a sense of disorientation. Last but not least is John Heckle's Head Front Panel project with the aptly named "Furious", a malevolent slice of early Mills-influenced, dense techno.

Review: Following on from last year's second Consciousness compilation, Afterlife returns with an even more ambitious project. Label owners Tale of Us deliver a suitably melodic track, "Nova", but there are also a series of contributions from high-profile artists. Sterac's "Universum" is an expertly weighted, stripped back techno affair, while on "Phase In", Edit Select takes it deeper with a throbbing, tranced out groove that is like a more refined take on early Plus 8 material. Completing the techno triumvirate is Scuba's SCB project. Now also a vehicle for the UK producer's socially conscious thoughts, "Tide Slide", which is possibly a reference to the effects of climate change, sees him deliver a frosty techno groove.

Review: Some eight years on from his Hessle Audio debut, Blawan has finally got round to releasing his debut album. Predictably, it's rather good, offering an eight-track assault on the senses built around his now familiar clanking, industrial-tinged polyrhythmic techno rhythms, foreboding electronics and paranoid, claustrophobic aural textures. Most of the sounds - including the percussion hits - were created using modular synthesis, which gives Wet Will Always Dry a particularly atmospheric and otherworldly feel. There are nods towards the likes of Surgeon and Livity Sound, as well as Rhythm & Sound/Basic Channel style dub techno, but the album's greatest strength is that it never sounds like anything other than a fine set of Blawan club tracks.

Review: UK producer Medlar dons the Klic alias again on Home Taping Is Killing Music, the first time in nearly six years since he threw down the classic "Slow Down" with Kiwi Lokiboi. Like the title's name may suggest "Disco Music" infuses '70's boogie down aesthetics with dusty modern deep house vibes. It stands out on its own, but the remixes sure are fantastic. From Dicky Trisco's respectful remix, which gets even more low-slung and hypnotic for the late night, plus Gerd Janson and Lauer working their magic as always on two remixes that push their new, harder edged sound. From the tough and gutsy old school stomp of their Tuffy City Kids Acid mix, to the bangin' old school rave aesthetic of the Tuff City Kids Garage mix.

Review: French dame Bloody Mary is back with another simmering brew of TB-303 antics on The Melting Pot Ep Vol 2, featuring some legends and veterans alike. Witness the return of German acid kings Hardfloor, who serve up some euphoric tunnel vision on the terrific "Thisishowwedo", Ovum head honcho Josh Wink delivers a fitting tribute on the deeply evocative "Dame Deep" calling to mind the early '90s glory days of Peacefrog or Ferox. Do Not Resist The Beat's Milton Bradley dons the Alian Rain alias once again on the adrenalised rush of "Contact" while last but not least: Bloody Mary chips in for something a bit more uplifting and groove oriented with "Mono". All killer and no filler on this one.

Review: Seilscheibenpfeiler Schallplatten Berlin
Lory D is one of European techno's unsung heroes, but his profile has risen steadily in recent years thanks to Eps on Wireblock and Numbers. Jam With Deaf Cats will also do his reputation no harm. "Acid-Cls 2" is a storming, old school acid techno affair, the kind of material that used to appear on ACV. On "Torn-3-33", a similar 90s aesthetic prevails; exceeding 130bpm, it's a pacy, wiry workout that resounds to wild yelps, bleeps and blips. "Elk-50" is slower and drum-heavy, as the Italian artist explores a more cavernous, spacious arrangement. Remaining in that territory is Marcel Dettmann's take on "Sbinson", a frazzled, hazy affair, led by tough, punchy kicks.

Review: Rekids features here two extraordinary re-edits of recent Radio Slave tracks by Pampa boss DJ Koze. Taken from his Feel The Same album, Matt Edwards has certainly received a brilliant rendition from the Hamburg legend right here. The euphoric remix of the title track still features the looped-up diva vocals of the original and is exactly the kind of track you'd expect him to drop on a Sunday night one of his his regular appearances at Panorama Bar. Then, the hard hitting and tunneling "Reverse" is more on the techno tip and originally appeared on 2017's Overdue EP. Both edits are secret weapons for any serious DJ's set.

Take for instance Israeli progressive house hero Guy J's absolutely mesmerising perspective of "Epilogue", which injects even more dancefloor dynamics into the track, rising Bristolian star Dubspeeka's brooding menace that's scraped directly off the factory floor - as heard on his remix of "From The Purple Sky" and Espai Music label owner Trivmph steps up to execute a totally adrenalised rework of "Kingdom" that totally has the peak time in mind.

Review: Marcelus has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with techno institution Tresor over the past six years, issuing a series of EPs and his debut album on the label. For his first release of 2018, the French artist makes a sideways shift. The title track is an organic-sounding affair, revolving around loose drums and intricate percussive twists and turns. Most notably, it eschews a direct dance floor approach. On "Parenthesis", the French producer goes deeper, with layered textures unfolding over a languid groove, while on "Descent" a watery, minimal sound prevails. It's not all subtle sounds however, and "Say It Again" is an uptempo, rattling workout, which is sure to keep Tresor's core constituents very happy.

Review: When he's not re-wiring the techno blueprint under his own name or as Planetary Assault Systems, Luke Slater indulges in a house-based side project, LB Dub Corp. Side Effects is his first output under this alias since the 2013 debut LB Dub Corp album. "Reel One" sees him draw on Chicago house to create a deep, churning bass-led groove, while on "Night Time Hawk", he delivers a slower, dubbed out take on the Planetary Assault Systems sound. While Side Effects showcases Slater's less full-on style, there is a steely intensity present even on vocal sampling tracks like "Edge 7", and more laid back arrangements like "Float When You Can" still resound to a deep-seated trippiness.

Review: -2 was last seen providing a hard edged contribution to a split release on Hayes, and the producer's mood hasn't changed much here. "TL1" is a dense, panel-beating banger that cruises close to the 140bpm mark. "TL2" revolves around a similar tempo, but the arrangement is more spacious and the rhythm more streamlined, while the use of atmospheric synths lends it a somewhat esoteric edge. There are no such concessions on "TL3", -2's collaboration with VIL, which revolves around a vicious, predatory bass, while on "TL4", -2 moves closer to the high-paced minimalism of producers like Jeff Mills and Surgeon.

Review: Hayes is a new techno label to emerge from Portugal, and for its second release gathers together some new talent. First up is -2 with "Scherzo", a dense, rolling groove led by dramatic chord surges. It's understated, but its kicks rumble away in the background like distant thunder. Temudo, who has released on Planet Rhythm and Labrynth, delivers deeper, hypnotic, loops of "A2", while on Osse's "Quantum Mechanics", a forbidding future is mapped out through the use of spiky, insistent rhythms and tonal sequences transmitted from outer space. Rounding off this exemplar release is VIL's "Metafora", where claustrophobic drums and clattering percussion prevail.

Review: Biomorph is the debut album from Enrico Sangiuliano, an artist who has previously featured on Adam Beyer's label. As the industrial drones of "Functional Basic Unit of Life" and the rugged electro on "Generative Model" and "Arboreal" all demonstrate, he has mapped out a route that stops off at many diversions. However, at his heart, the Italian producer remains a dance floor techno lover - and he expresses this passion most eloquently on Biomorph with the epic, trance-influenced "Cosmic Ratio" and "Hidden T" as well as "Multicellular", a storming big-room affair that is led by a tearing, system-levelling bass.

Review: Salvatore Carlino aka P Leone has previously released on Work Them Records and E-Missions, so this debut on Rekids does not come as a surprise. In essence, this is stripped back, heads-down dance floor techno at its finest. "Rose Petal Breaks" features lithe drums, a relentless rhythm and insistent stabs, while on "Noon Service", Carlino turns his attention to surging, building chords, croaking samples and pounding kicks. "Hold Me Down" is more visceral, as Carlino drops a grinding analogue riff over tough drums, while on "Sometimes I Feel Strong", he returns to the type of relentless, driving workout that "Rose Petal Breaks" inhabited. It's a release that's tailor-made for techno DJs.

Review: Last year, ESP Institute put out Benedikt Frey's debut album and now they offer a remix package that's just as impressive. First up is I:Cube, who reworks "H for Hysteria". Currently riding high on the back of his brilliant Double Pack release, the French producer turns it into a deep, flowing affair, led by subtle acid tweaks and hushed atmospheric chords. In Tolouse Low Trax's hands, the same track morphs into a stripped back, bass-led affair, while DJ Normal 4 offers an idiosyncratic take on "Private Crimes", with deep acid lines and a ghostly vocal sample burning their way through rickety break beats. Rounding off this impressive remix package is DJ Dalo's take on "Crimes", where a spooky break beat sound prevails.

Review: Chasing The Dream is the first artist album on Tale of Us' label and it's an impressive affair. The work of Ukrainian duo Woo York, it stays true to Afterlife's love of melodic electronic music. This is audible on the gentle break beats and warm synth hooks of "More Than a Feeling" and the title track or the windswept "Inception". That said, there is also a darker side to Dream; it first rears its head on the pulsating acid of "Burning With You" before the pair veer into the throbbing, epic "Energy Pulse" and drop tough kicks and the purring bass menace of "Kadastre". However, they really impress on the record's more melodic moments, and the soft-burning hooks of "Rise" shows that Woo York and Afterlife are masters of the art of the melodic.

Review: The Glue EP by Irish power duo features two new tracks embodying the same dramatic and evocative vibes from their recent, highly acclaimed self titled album. The title track here unashamedly explores rave nostalgia, with its tough breakbeats, euphoric chord progressions and gated vocal samples taking you all the way back to '92. "Metro" uses phased acid house style drum patterns with roaring rave synth leads on this slow burning but heavily building dancefloor destroyer. Finally "DLR" soundtracks those divine moments of truth loved up in the chill-out tent, with this emotive ambient house cut with a nice tint of 303 acid for good measure that's reminiscent of classics by Orbital et al.

Review: After a release on sub-label Unterton last year, Phase Fatale aka Hayden Payne now makes his debut on the mother imprint. Taking inspiration from industrial's dance floor and experimental strains in equal measures, the common bond across Reverse Fall is Payne's adherence to dark electronic sounds. This takes form on the pounding, Front 242-style title track and "Blackbox", where a tunnel of glitchy percussion paves the way for a peak time, pounding rhythm. In contrast, on "Empty Whip" percussive bursts simulate whip lashes doled out over a buckled, broken electro track, while on "Incision" brooding sub bass and murky textures collide to bring this bleak but compelling release to a finale.

Review: Benjamin Damage became part of the R&S family last year, and this single offers a taster for his debut album, due for release soon on the storied label. The title track is an evocative affair, touching on early 90s intelligent techno's emotive, fragile melodies while keeping a focus on the dance floor thanks to the use of a stepping groove. On "Binary", Damage also conjures up a melodic aesthetic, only this time he expresses it through the use of surging chords and a skipping rhythm. Both tracks are understated but distinctive and bode well for the UK producer's imminent long player.

Review: Few producers do underground electronic music like Thomas Schumacher. Following on from his Natural Rhythm series on Noir last year, the veteran German artist returns to the label to deliver another unique EP. Central to Schumacher's sound are his deadly, slamming rhythms, examples of which are prevalent here. On "Paradox", this signature manifests in the form of a peak-time affair that plays host to a murky bass, eerie synths and rolling snares. It's a dramatic, relentless affair. On "Embody", there is a similar aesthetic audible - the only difference is the spooky vocal that is woven in and out of the arcing acid lines and layered siren riffs.

Review: We're barely a quarter of the way through the year and it already seems like Peggy Gou is going to be one of house music's heroes of 2018. Here, the Berlin-based South Korean follows-up her brilliant Once EP on Ninja Tune (which included the soon-to-be-an-anthem brilliance of "It Makes You Forget") with a new EP for Phonica White (a label she first graced back in 2016). "Travelling Without Arriving" is a rubbery, sun-kissed deep house treat rich in elastic bass, toasty chords, glassy-eyed synthesizer melodies and dreamy, drifting electronics. Brooklyn beat-maker GE-OLOGY serves up a superb alternative version which retains the track's gentle positivity and breezy melodiousness while dragging it further towards futurist techno territory.

Review: Hot on the heels of last year's Metabolism album for Token, Sigha drops a new four-track EP. "Circular" is a pounding, bleep-heavy rhythm that resounds to powerful drums. On "Gliss", the UK producer ramps up the intensity levels with droning riffs and a dense rhythm that come across like a contemporary, more refined take on vintage Steve Bicknell. "Flare" is less obtuse and experimental, with Sigha dropping hypnotic tonal bleeps over a pounding groove, in much the same manner as Mike Parker's output. Rounding off the EP is "Hum", where Sigha goes deeper and deeper into experimental sound scapes.

Review: Bubbletease Communications' releases are defiantly infrequent, reflecting boss man Maurice Fulton's desire to only release personal projects and those he's somehow had a hand in. Given Fulton's track record, this approach guarantees a high quality threshold; in truth, Bubbletease releases are rarely less than excellent. This four-tracker from Tokyo-based DJ Nori, co-produced by Fulton, is predictably impressive. There's a touch of melancholic, acid-flecked stargazing in the shape of "Spaceg" (all heady synth melodies, fuzzy bass and 808 cowbells), some out-there, beatless space calypso (the unwieldy "We Don't Know"), and a mighty chunk of Syclops-ish wonk-jack ("80s Drugs"). Oh, and a moody, Detroit-influenced Fulton remix of "Happy Sunday" that breaks into a space disco jam near the end.

Review: Hessle Audio mark the first release of their 10th year in business with a label debut from one of Bristol's finest. Head of the Timedance label and events series, Batu steps up with four tracks of driving percussion and oddball atmospherics. Starting off with the offbeat sci-fi groove that is the title rack, "Off Court" soon gets into some booming lo-end dynamics, complimented by some darkly emotive synth textures. "Nosema" is the most straight ahead effort on here: a tight and rolling groove (for sweaty late night weirdness) until the lush ambient epic "Don't" closes out the EP in top style. In addition to his hot releases on Dnuos Ytivil and Fringe White in recent times: this guy's on fire!

Review: Renowned techno duo Shlomo and AWB have already road tested their new Eyssenah project with some festival performances but they now capture the project's sound with this first EP. Stardust Breaker ranges in style from the glass ambience of "Capsule" to the pile-driving percussive techno of "Dabla" and the title track, a broken beat and filtered, noisy affair. In between these two extremes sits the wonderful "Ghost Kamikaze Attack" - a wild and vivid collision of IDM, electro rhythms and Shake's techno funk - while on "Saike" the French pair surprise again with a breathy, atmospheric stepper that could easily fit in the Livity catalogue.

Review: Strahil "Kink" Velchev may well be the hardest-working man in dance music. Each new-year brings a succession of fine singles, with little in the way of fluff or filler. Even so, the vast Playground is only his second album to date (his first, "Under Destruction", appeared in 2014). It is arguably his strongest collection of tracks to date, though. Over the course of the 12 tracks, he brilliantly demonstrates the depth and variety of his influences, variously turning his hand to cinematic downtempo beats ("Samodiva", "The Universe in Her Eyes"), warehouse-friendly peak-time anthems (stab-heavy smasher "Russian"), DJ Sneak/Dj Duke-style big room house ("Perth", 'Organ"), mind-altering experimental dub ("Peter Piet Pete"), Industrial ("Tate of Metal") and, of course, angular analogue techno ("Five", "Teo Techno").

Review: Boris Bunnik aka Conforce has been releasing music on Delsin for the best part of a decade, but the relationship continues to thrive. On this latest EP for the established Dutch label, Bunnik favours a largely expansive, cavernous sound. While "Celestion" is based on a lithe, wiry rhythm, it's the dubby chords that make it stand out. "Vessel" is even more impressive; it sees Bunnik drop the tempo but add an intangible sense of melancholia to his brooding chords. Although "Zephyr" is more stripped back, it too boasts an atmospheric feeling, articulated by its subsonic bleeps. "Aerial" closes out this exemplary release with its haunting synths and insistent but spacious rhythm.

Review: Artefakt aka Nick Lapien and Robin Koek have enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Delsin. They released one of their first Eps on the label back in 2015 and issuing their debut album on its sister imprint, Ann Aimee, last year. Now the duo makes a return visit to the main Dutch imprint. "The Blue Hour" is a malign-sounding roller, led by acrid riffs and heavy layers of reverb. By contrast, "Weltformel" is a wonderfully light and floaty break beat affair that captures their work at its most atmospheric. Somewhere in the middle of these opposites sits the title track, a deep, dance floor-friendly groove that features a fusion of airy synths and curling acid lines.

Review: Russian rising star Dimitri Veimar is up next on Tiga's revered Turbo imprint. The label head honcho himself has previously stated Veimar 'is the kind of musical discovery that, were I a religious man, would go to bed and pray for every night.' His new one "Blaze" is a dirty, fuzzy and downright bombastic electro experiment, that is bursting at the seams. Formerly of Moscow, he's now based in Berlin, where he most likely hooked up with another transplant - Wiesbaden's Florian Kupfer - who delivers a typically stripped-back and industrial edged perspective of the track.

Review: Echologist is one of Brendon Moeller's projects, and not an alias one might immediately associate with Mord. That said, this EP contains quite a kick. "Raise" manages to combine a weighty dub bass with powerful drums and vast swathes of cubby reverb. It's deep and textured but is also massively forceful. On "Slight Detour", Moeller heads into a tougher, even more linear direction: the kicks are pounding and the percussion nags and rattles relentlessly as a wall of layered effects ebbs and flows. "Dispatch" is deeper and more subtle thanks to Moeller's use of mesmerisingly hypnotic chords, but it's only a temporary divergence and soon enough, he returns with the skeletal break beat techno of "Walrus".

Review: In its original format, "Grace.." resounds to a rolling, system-levelling bass, twitchy percussion and a mournful chord sequence that breaks into the sound of car skidding in the middle of the arrangement. It's one of the most unusual techno tracks to appear in recent months, so it's fair to imagine that it might be a challenge for most producers to remix it. Not so for DarBian. Favouring a tougher sound and a slightly faster tempo, this alternate version centres on a buzzing, electronic bass, skeletal percussion and a cavernous groove that will have the same hypnotic effect as the original version

Review: As its title suggests, Digital Bonus is an EP designed for non-vinyl fans of Seleccion Natural, the techno super group comprising Reeko, Tensal and Oscar Mulero. The good news for digital DJs is that this is not something that has been rushed out or released as an afterthought. "Negative Selection" catches them in full flight, with tough, steely drums and pounding kicks delivering the kind of killer, punchy techno that they are best known for. "Struggle for Existence" is better still, with Seleccion Natural combing surging chord sequences with a murky, meat bass that will level sound systems. Overall, it's a great digital selection.
