Review: Suburban Base Recordings have pulled every favour out of the back and left no stone unturned in their pursuit of creating a top quality compilation, giving us sixteen tracks of pure breakbeat energy. From start to finish, the quality level simply refuses to dip, from the jungle influenced drum dips and chords of 'Come My Selecta' from DJ Peekay, to the nostalgic hardcore melodies of Max Voltage's 'Make You Scream' and GBH's throwback-inspired roller in 'Back From The Grave'. Providing the perfect combination of jungle and breaks from start to finish, our highlights would have to include the jittering horn melodies of E.Kude's 'Common Sens', the synth-raining shimmers of E-Type's 'E-25' and of course the electrifying drum chops of D'Cruze's 'Life', alongside the awesome vocals of Rachel Wallace. Awesome work!

Review: It's always good to see new music from the nostalgia inducing sounds of Hardcore Energy, who this time invite the wonderful MKII inside for a dazzling display of original breakbeat flavour. We open up with the pure euphoria of 'This Is', a piano-lead piece of sonic mastery, taking rave-ready vocal lines and grin-inducing key melodies to bring the house down in any dance. The other original takes the title 'Can't You See' and takes a slightly more stripped back approach, but is again pushed forward by a fantastic rave piano lead, evoking memories of many of a dancefloor in all of us. Both of these originals have been given a tasty remix, with Samurai Breaks firstly upping the tempo on 'This Is' for a gorgeous twist up, followed by Agora's heavyweight, jungle-inspired acidic journey through 'Can't See You'. This is a wicked collection to say the very least!

Review: The first volume of Hardcore Energy Introducing is considered an essential selection of rave material by a new generation of producers, packed full of nostalgia that will transport you back to the halcyon days of the Free Party scene: think pirate radio, warehouse raves and dancing in the fields. It opens up with the proto-jungle roller by Tribe Steppaz & 6Blocc "Down With The Underground", then comes a throwback to the loved-up euphoria of the early '90s on 9Trane's "Thuggish", while Farayen takes us back to the second summer of love beneath the M25 on "Can't Take It" and Sharpson is the real star on here with two tracks - his finest being "I Think I Know This One" which harks back to the R&S glory days.

Review: What a monsterous collection of creations we have here as we explore the full range of breakbeat influences, from slower, more clunky original creations, to garage inspired rollers and everything in-between. The sheer mass of this collection is one of it's immediate charms as we are gifted over 50 originals and remixes, each one bringing something unique to the table from a supporting cast including the likes of Origin8a & Propa, Benton, MKII, Deekline, Samurai Breaks and more. The constant changes of direction and expansionary sense of sonic inclusion are both big yesses from us, with our favourites including 9Trane's nostalgic bubbler 'Thuggish', next to the housey piano drives of Herve's 'Live Together' and the old school garage flavour of Matt Jam Lamont, Echelon & Tuff Culture, who join focus for 'Massive & Crew'. Tidy work indeed!

Review: Next up from Ac1d Vicious, a playful three track collection, exploring the more acidic side of breakbeat culture, delivering a set of unique, yet potent originals. We begin with the constantly alternating backdrops and blippy textures of 'Salt', a truly unpredictable piece of magic, dipped in acid-house synths, industrial sounding glitches and nostalgic pad textures for good measure. From here, 'Fat' drives down a much more hardcore influenced avenue, with booming synthesizer sizzles leading the way atop a computerized backdrop. Finally, 'Acid Heater' takes us back to the raves of the early 90's, with throwback chord melodies playing a lead role, sitting gracefully above high intensity breaks and a seriously glitchy set of everything else you could wish for. Beautiful work!

Review: Between 1990 and '92, Nottingham's Mark Gamble and Leroy Crawford released a series of Bleep-influenced cuts that have since become classics. This expansive EP gathers together some of their most potent cuts, throwing in a few lesser-known tracks for good measure. The key cut is 'Take Me Back', an excitable mixture of Unique 3 style raw bleeps, rumbling sub-bass, shuffling drums and rave-igniting synth stabs. Gamble's 2020 update is tastefully done and arguably even more potent than the original mix, while the 1990 'Bass-Head' mix and sub-heavy Rob Gordon Edit are both essential. Elsewhere, 'Frequency' joins the dots between bleep and dreamy Italian house; 'Wind Me Up' is simultaneously sleazy and rush-inducing; 'Night People' is deliciously low-slung; and 'Splat' a successful exercise in deep, melodious Bleep & Bass.
