Review: Around7's latest EP is a true homage to a classic house sound with love to Chicago and Detroit, funk, soul, disco and slapping Roland drums. With three distinct numbers here, Around7 skilfully weaves sampled disco loops and hella phase-action into a tapestry of infectious grooves, basslines, kicks - and all that jazz. Straight up Robsoul.

Review: Phil Weeks' long-running French house/deep house label Robsoul Recordings round up the best of their 2020 output in one high-VFM package. As per Robsoul's MO generally, you won't find a lot in the way of navel-gazing introspection or pointless, self-indulgent experimentalism here - Robsoul have always specialised in dropping beats to move your feets and this year's crop doesn't disappoint! The wonky, jazzy garage of The Mekanism's 'Signs', the raw jack of Joss Moog's 'So Good So Fresh', Demuir's strutty hip-houser 'Nice And Dutty' and Jade Cox's looping, west coast-ish 'Realise' are just some of the highlights of a fine collection.

Review: This is the third 'best of' from Phil Weeks' Robsoul in just five months - the label celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2020 - but the quality standard remains high. Featuring several of Weeks' own productions alongside cuts from the likes of DJ W!LD, Jordan Peak and Chris Stussy, the album covers an impressive range of house ground, from filter disco (see, for instance, Weeks/Hector Moralez/Fries & Bridges collab 'Peep Game') to chunky, eyes-down 3am throbbers (Politics Of Dancing's 'Hi Soul') to Weeks & Kid Enigma's retro, electro-tinged 'Love Me Right'. As such, it's a package that warrants investigation by househeads of many persuasions.

Review: Phil Weeks presents another volume of Robsoul Edits and after previously being compiled by the likes of D'julz and Chris Carrier it's now turn for Joss Moog who presents the usual suspects while giving credit to the edit. He did a brilliant job while taking the razor to Phil Weeks/DJ Sneak's funky disco loops on "Class In Session 1" and the dirty afterhours electro-house of Sexicanz "Bring Some Weed To The DJ Booth" and not to mention the red-edits of a bunch of his own tracks such as "Forever Pimpin'" (sexy and dusty deepness!) and "Welcome to Ohio" (Moodymann style jazzy goodness!).

Raw Is The Fight - (5:53) 120 BPM
Review: It's another Robsoul release so you know what to expect: looped up, sample heavy, downright dusty and funky house of the deeper variety. The title track has the infectious disco repetition of label boss himself Phil Weeks or legend DJ Sneak and is absolutely made to play. On "It Popped Into My Head" things get even deeper and funkier with its bumpy bass rhythmic shuffle plus that unmistakable French touch. There's variety, rest assured; "MPC Ain't Playin'" explores some deep funk breaks on this useful tool while the hip hop vibe continues on "Raw Is The Fight" up until that four to the floor kick drums stomps on in for this delightful street level jam reminiscent of Max Graef and Glenn Astro's stuff.

Review: Gallic groove meister Sebastien Guertau (Around7) began his musical quest by playing bass in a jazz-funk ensemble. Eventually he learned to fuse electronics with live instrumentation and boom! His new label (with Joss Moog & Jean Ce) Ondule was born. Le Bel Age translates as 'the best years' and clearly he's talking about where he's at right now - there's three of his best tunes here - the beguiling jazzy shuffle of the title track, remixed into some cool after hours house by Phil Weeks, echoed in the deep house undulations of "Nuit Blanche" and the abstract piano-meets-beats jam, "Grasse Mat".

Around7 - "M'as Tu Vu" - (6:14) 119 BPM
Review: Ondule Records begins life with a clear intent on dropping a minimal kind of disco-edit groove for the contemporary dancefloor, and they're made the right move in asking Joss Moog to contribute. With many a release notched up for Robsoul and more, the Paris resident knows just how to simmer a good lick down its fundamentals as string it out over a mean house groove. "Tous Azimut" is the more heads-down of his two offerings, while "Menage A 3" gets a little feistier in its own insistent roll. Around7 meanwhile keeps the tension up to a maximum on "Super Spectacle" before offering up a more laid-back consideration on "M'as Tu Vu".

Review: Having made his intentions more than clear with his "Back To Basics" release earlier this year, Parisian beat craftsman Around7 goes deep with his debut LP. The result is a smoky fusion of deft sample mastery, jazz-flecked soul and nonchalant b-boy cheekiness. Ranging from the stuttering beats and sexy vocal samples of "Dirty" to the sleazy, slippery double bass and trembling strings of "Old Days", the instrumentality, unpredictability and strong sense of groove comes on strong like a fusion of Dilla and Kidkanevil. Jump on theses now as any day soon an MC is going to come along and buy the lot...

Review: For the uninitiated, Around7 is a Parisian beatmaker with a difference. Composing mainly with an MPC in the old hip-hop fashion, he makes deep, jazz-soaked jams that sit somewhere between Guru, DJ Cam and Moodymann. This 19-minute 'LP' for Phil Weeks' Robsoul Jazz imprint is something of a surprise gem, flitting effortlessly between bossa-influenced 4/4 cuts (see "Broi"), sampladelic deep soul beats ("The 7th Sin"), stoned trip-hop (the Jazzamatazz flashback vibes of "Butter & Fly" and "I Love BBQ") and head-nodding nu-jazz ("Kick It"). The overall quality suggests that we could be hearing more from him in coming years.
